1. Slowly press down on the accelerator pedal to
get your vehicle moving again. For an all-
wheel drive vehicle, set the drive mode-sel
ector to the “4WD AUTO” or “4WD LOCK”

then slowly press down on the accelera

The Electric parking brake is the system that applies the parking brake by the electricmotor.
When the parking brake is applied, the brake warning light (red) in the instrument clusterand the indicator light (A) on the Electric parking brake switch will come on. When parking on a hill, set the parking brake, and turn the front wheels toward the curb on adownhill, or away from
the curb on an uphill.
CAUTIONBefore driving, be sure that the parking brake is fully released and brake warninglight is off.If you drive without the parking brake fully released, the warning
display will appear on
the information screen in the multi-informa-tion display. If a vehicle is driven without releasing the parking brake, the brakes will be overheated,resulting in ineffectiv
e braking and possible

When turning a sharp corner in “4WD LOCK” (Electronically controlled 4WD) or “LOCK” (S-AWC) position at low speed, a
slight difference in
steering may be experi-
enced similar to feeling as if the brakes wereapplied. This is calle
d tight corner braking
and results from each of the four tires being at a different distance from the corner. The phe-nomenon is typical of 4-
wheel drive vehicles.
If this occurs, either straighten out the steer- ing wheel or change to another mode. Set the drive mode-selector to “4WD AUTO”, “4WD LOCK” (Electronically con- trolled 4WD) or “SNOW” (S-AWC) in accor- dance with the road conditions, and thengradually depress the accelerator pedal for a smooth start.

After operating the vehicle in rough road con- ditions, be sure to perform the followinginspection and maintenance procedures:  Check that the vehicle has not been dam- aged by rocks, gravel, etc.  Carefully wash the vehicle with water.

 Install only the specified tires on all wheels. Refer to “Tires and wheels” onpage 11-7.  Be sure all four tires and wheels are the same size and type.When it is necessary to replace any of the tires or wheels, replace all four.  All tires should be ro
tated before the wear
difference between the front and rear tires is recognizable.
Good vehicle performance cannot be expected if there is a difference in wear between tires. Refer to “Tire rotation” on page 9-21.  Check the tire inflation pressure regularly.
CAUTIONNever drive through water that is deep enough to cover wheel hubs, axles or exhaustpipe. Do not change th
e selector lever posi-
tion while driving through water. Frequent driving through water can adversely affect the life
span of the vehicle;
consult an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair faci
lity of your choice and
take the necessary measures to prepare,inspect, and repair the vehicle. After driving through water, apply the brakes to be sure they are
functioning properly. If
the brakes are wet and not functioning prop- erly, dry them out by driving slowly whilelightly depressing the brake pedal. Inspect each part of the vehicle carefully.

Your vehicle is equipped with power brakes for more braking force with less brake pedal effort.Your brakes are designed to operate at full capacity, even if the power assist is not being used.If the power assist is not being used, the effort needed to press the brake pedal is greater. If you should lose the power assist for somereason, the brakes will still work. If the power brake unit or either of the two brake hydraulic systems stops working prop-erly, the rest of the brake system will still work, but the vehicle will not slow down as quickly.You will know this has happened if you find you need to press the brake down farther, or harder when slowing down or stopping, or ifthe brake warning light and the warning dis- play in the multi-information display come on.

CAUTION Do not tow 4-wheel drive vehicles with the front or rear wheels on the ground (Type A or Type B) as illustrated. This could result in damage to the drivetra
in, or unstable towing.
If you tow 4-wheel drive vehicles, use TypeC or Type D equipment. Even in “4WD ECO” (Electronically con- trolled 4WD) or “AWC ECO” (S-AWC) drive mode, the vehicle cannot be towed with the front or the rear wheels on theground.
Jacking up a 4-wheel drive vehicle
WA R N I N G Do not crank the engine while jacking up the vehicle. The tire on the ground may turn and thevehicle may roll off the jack.

The brake assist system is a device assisting drivers who cannot depress the brake pedal firmly such as in em
ergency stop situations
and provides greater braking force. If the brake pedal is depressed suddenly, the brakes will be applied with more force thanusual.
CAUTION Do not overly rely on the hill start assist to prevent backwards movement of the vehicle.Under certain circumstances, even when hillstart assist is activated, the vehicle may move backwards if the brake pedal is not suf- ficiently depressed, if
the vehicle is heavily
loaded, or if the road is very steep or slip- pery. The hill start assist is not designed to keep the vehicle stopped in place on uphill slopes for more than 2 seconds. When facing uphill, do not rely on using the hill start assist to
maintain a stopped position
as an alternative to depressing the brake pedal. Doing so could cause an accident. Do not turn the ignition switch to the “OFF”, “LOCK” or “ACC” position while the hillstart assist is operating. The hill start assist could stop operating,
which could result in
an accident.

The anti-lock braking
system helps prevent
the wheels from locking up when braking.This helps maintain vehicle drivability and steering wheel handling.  When using the anti-lock brakes (sudden braking), steering is slightly different from normal driving conditions. Use the steering wheel carefully. Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you. Even if your vehi- cle is equipped with
the anti-lock braking
system, leave a greater braking distance when: • Driving on gravel or snow-coveredroads. • Driving on uneven road surfaces.
 Operation of anti-lock braking system is not restricted situati
ons where brakes are
applied suddenly. This system may also prevent the wheels from locking when you drive over manholes, steel roadworkplates, road markings
, or any uneven road
surface.  When the anti-lock braking system is in use, you may feel the brake pedal vibrat- ing and hear a unique
sound. It may also
feel as if the pedal
resists being pressed.
In this situation, simply hold the brake pedal down firmly. Do not pump thebrake, which will result in reduced braking performance.
CAUTION The brake assist system is not a device designed to exercise
braking force greater
than its capacity. Make
sure to always keep a
sufficient distance be
tween your vehicle and
a vehicle in front of you without relying too much on the brake assist system.NOTE
 Once the brake assist system is operational, it maintains great braking force even if the brake pedal is lightly released. To stop its operation, completely removeyour foot from the brake pedal.  The brake assist system may become opera- tional when the brake pedal is fully depressed even if it
has not been depressed
suddenly.  When the brake assist system is in use while driving, you may feel as if the depressedbrake pedal is soft, the pedal moves in small motions in conjuncti
on with the operation
noise, or the vehicle body and the steeringwheel vibrate. This occurs when the brake assist system is ope
rating normally and does
not indicate faulty
operation. Continue to
depress the brake pedal.  You may hear an operation noise when the brake pedal is suddenl
y or fully depressed
while stationary. This
does not indicate a
malfunction and the brake assist system is operating normally.
 When the anti-lock brake system warning light or only active st
ability control warning
light illuminate, the brake assist system innot functioning.

If the set speed driving is deactivated by the condition described in “To deactivate” on page 5-105, you can resume the previouslyset speed by push up the “RES +” switch (C) while driving at a speed of approximately 25 mph (40 km/h) or higher.The “SET” indicator appears on the informa- tion screen in the meter

meter) Under either of the following conditions, however, using the switch does not allow you to resume the previously set speed. In these situations, repeat the
speed setting procedure:
 The CRUISE CONTROL ON/OFF switch is pressed.  The operation mode is put in OFF.  Indicator goes off.

ACC maintains a set speed with no need for you to use the accelera
tor pedal. Using a sen-
sor (A), the system also measures the relative speed and distance betw
een your vehicle and
a vehicle in front, and maintains a set follow-ing distance between
your vehicle and the
vehicle in front by automatically decelerating your vehicle if it becomes too close to the vehicle in front. The cruising set speed can be set from 25mph (40 km/h) to 110 mph (180 km/h). The distance can be select
ed from three levels.
If the vehicle in front decelerates, the ACCwill automatically apply limited braking to maintain the distance, a
nd if the front vehicle
then accelerates, the ACC will automaticallyaccelerate your vehicle up to the set speed. If your vehicle is approa
ching too close to the
front vehicle, a buzzer
will sound and a warn-
ing is shown in the multi information display. When the ACC detects no vehicle ahead, the set speed will be maintained.Conventional cruise cont
rol mode without the
distance control can also be selected. Stop lights are illuminated during automaticbraking.
