Mitsubishi Motors Corporation strongly sup- ports the use of reform
ulated gasoline. Prop-
erly blended reformul
ated gasoline has no
adverse effect on vehicle performance or the durability of the engine and the fuel system. MMT is a manganese-containing metallic additive that is blende
d into some gasolines
to increase the octa
ne number. Mitsubishi
Motors Corporation recommends using gaso- lines without MMT. Use of gasolines blended with MMT mayadversely affect performance, and cause the malfunction indicator on your instrument panel to come on. If this happens, contact anauthorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your
choice for assistance.
Your vehicle may have
been designed to sat-
isfy California’s low-emission regulations based on clean-burning low-sulfur gasoline.Gasoline sold in parts of the country other than California is allowed to have a higher sulfur content. Using such gasoline couldadversely affect the ve
hicle’s catalytic con-
verter and cause the e
ngine malfunction indi-
cator (“SERVICE ENGINE SOON” or “Check engine light”)
to come on. Illumina-

while using high-sulfur

occur, you are advised to add a detergent additive to the gasoline when you refuel thevehicle. The additive
will remove the depos-
its, thereby returning the engine to a normal condition. Be sure
to use a Mitsubishi
Motors Genuine cleani
ng additive. Using an
unsuitable additive could make an engine malfunction. For details,
please contact the

After several attempts, you may experience that the engine still does not start. 1. Make sure that all electric devices, such as lights, air conditio
ning blower and rear
window defogger, are turned off. 2. While depressing the brake pedal, pressthe accelerator peda
l halfway and hold it
there, then crank th
e engine. Release the
accelerator pedal, immediately after theengine starts.
3. If the engine still will not start, the engine could be flooded with too much gasoline.While depressing the brake pedal, push the accelerator pedal all the way down and hold it there, then press the engineswitch to crank the engine. If the engine does not start after 5 to 6 seconds, push the engine switch
to stop cranking the
engine, and release th
e accelerator pedal.
Put the operation mode in OFF. Wait a few seconds, and then press the engine switch to crank the engine again while depressing the brake pedal, but do notpush the accelerator
pedal. If the engine
fails to start, repeat
these procedures. If
the engine still will
not start, contact your
local Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choi
ce for assistance.
Startability of the engine with an ambient temperature of -22 °F (-30 °C) or lowerWhen the ambient temperature is -22 °F (-30 °C) or lower, it may not be possible to start from a standstill even with the selector leverin the “D” (DRIVE) or “R” (REVERSE) position. This phenomenon occurs because the trans-axle has not warmed up sufficiently; it does not indicate a problem.
If this occurs, place
the selector lever in the “P” (PARK) positionand let the engine idle for at least 10 minutes.
The transaxle will wa
rm up, and you will be
able to start normally.Do not leave the vehicle during warm-up operation. The MIVEC engine automatically switches its intake-valve control between a low-speed mode and a high-speed mode in accordance with driving conditions for maximum engine performance.

Stopping the engine

driving except in an emergency. If theengine is stopped while driving, the brake servomechanism will ce
ase to function and
braking efficiency will deteriorate. Also,the power steering system will not func- tion and it will require greater manual effort to operate the steering. This couldresult in a serious accident.

This model is equipped with an electronically controlled fuel injection system. This is a sys-tem that automatically controls fuel injection. There is usually no need to depress the accel- erator pedal when starting the engine.The starter should not be run for more than 15 seconds at a time. To prevent battery drain, wait a few secondsbetween attempts to restart the engine. 1. Make sure all occupants are properly seated with seat belts fastened.
2. Insert the ignition key. 3. Press and hold the brake pedal downfirmly with your right foot. 4. Make sure the selector
lever is in the “P”
(PARK) position.5. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” posi- tion and make certain that all warning lights are functioning properly beforestarting the engine. 6. Turn the ignition switch to the “START” position without pressing the accelerator pedal. Release the
ignition switch when
the engine starts.

The disc brakes have an alarm that makes a metallic squeal when the brake pads have worn down enough to need service.If you hear this sound, have the brake pads replaced at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.

When the vehicle is stopped at traffic lightsetc., the vehicle can be
held stationary with
the brake auto hold system even if you release your foot from the brake pedal. When the accelerator pe
dal is depressed, the
brakes are released.
If the brake auto hold switch is pressed while all of the following c

system will change to the standby state and the indicator light (A) on the switch comeson.  The ignition switch or
the operation mode

Brake auto hold

WA R N I N G Do not overly rely on the brake auto hold system. On steep slope, depress the brakepedal firmly because the system may not hold the vehicle stationary. Never leave the vehicle while it is being stopped by the brake auto hold system. When leaving the vehicle, apply the park-ing brake and move th
e selector lever to
the “P” (PARK) position. Do not use brake auto hold system when driving on slippery roads. The system may not hold the vehicle stationary and couldresult in an accident. NOTE
 While operating the brake auto hold system, you may hear an operati
on noise to increase
braking force when the system detected the movement of the vehicl

cate a malfunction.

Depress the acceleration
pedal with the selec-
tor lever in any position other than “P” (PARK) or “N” (NEUTRAL).The brakes are released, and the brake auto hold indicator light in the instrument cluster will go off.
Press the brake auto hold switch to turn off the brake auto hold. The indicator light on the switch goes off. If you want to turn off the system while thebrake auto hold indicator light is illuminated, press the switch with
depressing the brake
pedal.

The hill start assist makes it easy to start off on a steep uphill slope by preventing the vehicle from moving backwards. It keeps thebraking force for about 2 second when you move your foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal.
