The Free-hand Advanced Security Transmit-ter (F.A.S.T.-key) enables the doors and theliftgate to be locked
and unlocked, the engine
to be started and the operation mode to bechanged simply by carrying it.The F.A.S.T.-key can also be used as theremote control transmitter of the keylessentry system.Refer to “Free-hand
Advanced Security
Transmitter (F.A.S.T.-key): Keyless entrysystem” on page 5-30.
The operations possible with the F.A.S.T.-key can be modified as stated below.(Keyless entry operations are possible.)For details, contact an
authorized Mitsubi-
shi Motors dealer.• Enabling only the locking and unlockingof the doors and the liftgate• Enabling only the starting of the engine• Deactivating the F.A.S.T.-key
Free-hand Advanced Secu-rity Transmitter (F.A.S.T.-key)
(if so equipped)
The F.A.S.T.-key must be carried by the driver. The F.A.S.T.-key is required for vehicle operations su
ch as locking and
unlocking the doors and the liftgate, starting the engine
and changing the
operation mode. When
leaving the vehi-
cle, make sure you are carrying the F.A.S.T.-key and then lock the vehicle.
WA R N I N GIndividuals who use
implantable pace-
makers or implanta
ble cardiovascular-
defibrillators should keep away from theexternal and internal
transmitters. The
electromagnetic w
aves used in the
F.A.S.T.-key may affe

implantable pacemakers and implantablecardiovascular-defibrillators.A- External transmitterB- Internal transmitter
WA R N I N GIndividuals using ot
her electro-medical
apparatus besides implantable pacemak-ers and implantable
cardiovascular-defi-
brillators should
check with the
manufacturer of the apparatus to confirmthe effect of the el
ectromagnetic waves
used by the F.A.S.T.-key. The electromag-netic waves may affect
the operations of
the electro-medical apparatus.NOTE
The F.A.S.T.-key uses weak electromagneticwaves. In cases such as the following, operationmay be imprope
r or unstable.
• The vehicle is near a facility that emitsstrong electroma
gnetic waves, such as a TV
transmitting tower, a po
wer station, a radio
station or an airport

When a person enters the operating range ofthe F.A.S.T.-key while carrying the F.A.S.T.-key and presses the driver’s or front passen-ger’s door lock/unlock switch, the liftgateLOCK switch or the liftgate OPEN switch, verification of the ID
code is performed.
The doors and the liftgate can be locked andunlocked and the engine
can be started only
when the ID codes of the vehicle andF.A.S.T.-key match.
The operating range is
within about 2.3 feet
(70 cm) of the handles of the driver’s door, front passenger door and liftgate.
• The key is carried together with other com-munication devices such
as cellular phones
or radios, or electrical appliances such ascomputers• The F.A.S.T.-key touches or is covered by ametal object• A keyless entry system is being usednearby• The battery of the F.A.S.T.-key is run down• The vehicle is in
a location with strong
electromagnetic
waves or noise
Use the emergency key in such circum-stances.Refer to “To operate
without using the
F.A.S.T.-key” on page 5-28.The F.A.S.T.-key is constantly performingreception opera
tions in its communication
with the vehicle. This means that the batteryis always running down, regardless of howoften the F.A.S.T.-key is used. The batterylife is about 1 to 3 years, depending on theusage conditions.Since the F.A.S.T.-key is constantly perform-ing reception operati
ons, the reception of
strong electrom
agnetic waves
can accelerate
the running down of the ba
ttery. Do not place
near to electrical appliances such as televi-sions or computers.NOTE
Operating range of the F. A . S . T. - k e y
NOTE
When the battery of the F.A.S.T.-key has rundown or there are st
rong electromagnetic
waves or noise in the area, the operatingrange could decrease
or operations could
become unstable.

WA R N I N GMake sure all doors are tightly closed andlocked while driving.• Locked doors, in co
mbination with the
use of seat belts, can help reduce the riskof ejection in
an accident.
• Locked doors can help keep passengers, especially small children, from openingdoors and falling out
of moving vehicles.
• Locked doors can help
prevent outsiders
from gaining access to your vehicle whenyou slow or come to a stop.
Lock your vehicle when
ever you leave it.
Children who get into
unlocked vehicles
may not be able to get out. Childrentrapped inside vehicles can quickly beovercome by heat
and suffer serious
injury or death due to heat stroke.Never leave a ch
ild alone in the vehicle. In
addition to the risk
of heat stroke, chil-
dren can activate switches and controls, resulting in an injury
or fatal accident.
When closing a door,
make sure that the
door is fully closed and the door-ajarwarning display goes
out on the informa-

1. After unlocking, push the liftgate openswitch (A) and raise the liftgate.
WA R N I N GAlways keep the door
s tightly closed and
locked when driving. An unlocked doormay be accidentally
opened by a passen-
ger, especially by
a child who could fall
out. Also, if the doors are not locked, thereis a greater risk of someone being thrownfrom the vehicle
in an accident.
Liftgate (except for vehicles equipped with the power liftgate)
WA R N I N GIt is dangerous to drive with the liftgateopen since carbon mo
noxide (CO) gas can
enter the passenger compartment.CO is an invisible, odorless gas that cancause unconsciousness and even death. When opening and cl
osing the liftgate,
make sure that there are no people nearbyand be careful not to hit your head orpinch your hands, neck, etc.If snow or ice has ac
cumulated on the lift-
gate, remove it before
opening the liftgate.
Otherwise the liftgate may abruptly closedue to the weight of the snow or ice.
When opening the lift
gate, always fully
open it. A partially opened liftgate canunexpectedly close due to its own weight. When the vehicle is parked on a slope, theeffort required to open or close the liftgatemay be greater or less than expected. The liftgate may also open or close morequickly.CAUTIONDo not stand behind the exhaust pipe whenloading and unloading
luggage. Heat from
the exhaust could lead to burns. To avoid damage to the liftgate, make surethat area above and behind the liftgate isclear before opening it.NOTE
Locking and unlocking the doors by usingpower door locks (driver and front passengerside), keyless entry system, or F.A.S.T.-keyoperation (vehicles
equipped with the
F.A.S.T.-key) also locks and unlocks the lift-gate.

CAUTIONMake sure there is no one standing nearbywhen opening the liftgate.NOTE
The liftgate cannot be rais
ed if it is not raised
immediately after pressing the liftgate openswitch. If this happens, raise th
e liftgate again after
pressing the liftgate open switch. It is not possible to open the liftgate whilethe battery is disconnect
