For a safer and more enjoyable trip, alwayscheck for the following:Before starting the vehicle, make certainthat you and all passengers are seated andwearing their seat
belts properly (with
children in the rear seat, in appropriaterestraints), and that all the doors and theliftgate are locked.
Move the driver’s seat as far backward aspossible, while keeping good visibility,and good control of the steering wheel,brakes, accelerator, and controls. Checkthe instrument panel indicators and multi-information display
for any possible prob-
lem.Similarly, the front
passenger seat should
also be moved as fa
r back as possible.
Make sure that infants and small childrenare properly restrained in accordance withall laws and
regulations.
Check these by selecting the defroster mode,and set the blower swit
ch on high. You should
be able to feel the air blowing against thewindshield. Refer to “Defrosti
ng or defogging (wind-
shield, door windows)” on page 7-12Check all the tires for heavy tread wear oruneven wear patterns. Look for stones, nails,glass, or other objects
stuck in the tread. Look
for any tread cuts or
sidewall cracks. Check
the wheel nuts for tightness, and the tires(including spare tire) for proper pressure.
Replace your tires before they are heavilyworn out.As your vehicle is equi
pped with a tire pres-
sure monitoring system, there is a risk ofdamage to the tire inflation pressure sensorswhen the tire is replaced on the rim. Tirereplacement should, onl
y, be performed by an
authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer.Have someone watch wh
ile you turn all the
exterior lights on and off. Also check the turnsignal indicators and hi
gh-beam indicators on
the instrument panel.Check the ground under the vehicle afterparking overnight, for
fuel, water, oil, or
other leaks. Make sure
all the fluid levels are
correct. Also, if you
can smell fuel, you need
to find out why imme
diately and have it
fixed.

Tongue loads can be adjusted by proper dis-tribution of the load in the trailer. This can bechecked by separately
weighing the loaded
trailer and then the tongue.The GAWRs are printed on the certificationlabel which is riveted on the door sill on thedriver’s side.Refer to “Vehicle labeling” on page 11-2.Choose a proper hitch and ball, and makesure it is installed at a height that is compati-ble with the trailer.Use a good equalizing hitch which uniformlydistributes the trailer tongue load throughoutthe frame.
A safety chain must al
ways be used between
the towing vehicle and the trailer. Leave suf-ficient slack in the chain for turns. The chainshould cross under the trailer tongue to pre-vent the tongue from dropping to the groundin case it becomes damaged or separated.For correct safety chai

ishi Motors dealer.
Your vehicle will need service more oftenwhen you’re towing a trailer. Refer to “WAR-RANTY AND MAINTENANCE MAN-UAL”. Especially important in traileroperation are automatic transaxle fluid,engine oil, rear axle
oil, belt, c
ooling system
and brake system. Each
of these is covered in
this manual.For details, please refer to the “Vehicle careand maintenance” section.Check periodically to see that all hitch nutsand bolts are tight.Mitsubishi Motors recommends that anytrailer having a total we
ight of 1,250 lbs (567
kg) or more (2400 models), 1,400 lbs (635kg) or more (3000 mode
ls) be equipped with
its own electric or surge-type brakes.If you choose electric br
akes, be sure they are
electrically actuated. Do not attempt to tapinto your vehicle’s hydraulic system. No mat-ter how successful it
may seem, any attempt
to attach trailer brakes to your vehicle’shydraulic system will lower braking effec-tiveness and create a potential hazard.
Gross axle weight rating (GAWR) Trailer hitches
WA R N I N GIf you make any holes in the body of yourvehicle for installing
a trailer hitch, be
sure to seal the holes later when youremove the hitch. If
you don’t seal them,
deadly carbon monoxide (CO) from yourexhaust can enter your vehicle. Refer to“Exhaust system” on page 9-24.

7. Connect one end of one jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the dis-charged battery (A),
and then connect the
other end to the positive (+) terminalof the booster battery (B).

8. Connect one end of the other jumper cable
to the negative (-) terminal of thebooster battery (B), a
nd then connect the
other end to the designated groundlocation of the vehicl
e with the discharged
battery (A) at the point farthest from thebattery.9. Start the engine in the vehicle providingthe boost. Let the engine idle a few min-utes, then start the engine in the vehiclewith the discharged battery.
10. After the engine is
started, disconnect the
cables in the reverse order from the wayyou connected them.

d is not visible, or
looks frozen, DO NOT ATTEMPT JUMPSTARTING!!The battery might split open or explode ifthe temperature is below the freezingpoint or if it is not filled to the properlevel.
WA R N I N GMake sure that the jumper cables andyour clothing are clear of the cooling fansand drive belts. Entanglement with thefans or belts can ca
use serious personal
injury.NOTE
Open the terminal cover before connectingthe jumper cable to the positive terminal ofthe battery.(Refer to “Battery” on page 9-13.)Use the proper cables suitable for the batterysize.Otherwise heat damage
to the cables could
result.

Make sure that the connection is madeto the correct designated location (asshown in the illustration) properly. If theconnection is directly made to the negative(-) terminal of the battery, the flammablegases from inside the battery might catchfire and explode, caus
ing personal injury.
When connecting the jumper cable, do notconnect the positive (+) cable to the nega-tive (-) terminal. Sparks can make the bat-tery explode.

ment with the engine running, be espe-cially careful that your clothing, hair, etc.does not get caught in the cooling fans,drive belts, or other moving parts.After performing the maintenance work,make sure that no tools or cloths are leftbehind in the engine compartment.If they are left behind, a fire or damage tothe vehicle may occur.The cooling fans can turn on automati-cally even if the engine is not running.Turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK”position to be safe while you work in theengine compartment.Do not smoke or allow open flames aroundfuel or the battery. The fumes are flamma-ble.Be extremely careful when workingaround the battery. It
contains poisonous
and corrosive sulfuric acid.Do not get under your ve
hicle while it is on
a jack.Always use properly rated automotivejack stands.

The hood lock release mechanism and hoodsafety catch should be checked, cleaned, andoiled when needed for easy movement and toprevent rust and wear. Use MultipurposeGrease NLGI Grade 2 sparingly for all slidingparts of the hood latch and release lever.Work the grease into the hood lock mecha-nism until all the movable surfaces are cov-ered.Also, put a light coat
of the same grease on
the safety catch wherever moving parts touch.

The ventilation slots in
front of the wind-
shield should be brushed clear after a heavysnowfall so that the operation of the heatingand ventilation systems will not be impaired.
To prevent freezing of the weatherstrippingon the doors, engine hood, etc., they shouldbe treated with
silicone grease.
It is a good idea to carry a shovel or a short-handled spade in the vehicle during the win-ter so that you can clear away snow if you getstranded. A small hand-brush for sweepingsnow off the vehicle a
nd a plastic scraper for
the windshield, side a
nd rear window are also
useful.
