The windshield wiper and washer can be operated with the ignition switch or the oper-ation mode is in ON or ACC. If the blades are frozen to the windshield, do not operate the wipers until the ice has meltedand the blades are freed, otherwise the wiper motor may be damaged.
With the lever in the “INT” (speed sensitive intermittent operation) position, the intermit- tent intervals can be adjusted by turning theknob (A).
 If the light switch is rotated to the “OFF” or “ ” position while the front fog lights are illuminated, they will automatically turn off. They can be turned back on again by rotatingthe combination headlights and dimmer switch back to “ ” position, and turning the knob in the direct
ion of the “ON” posi-
tion.  Do not use fog lights except in conditions of fog, otherwise excessive light glare maytemporarily blind oncoming vehicle drivers.

The misting function can be used when the ignition switch or the operation mode is in ON or ACC.The wipers will operate once if the wiper lever is raised to the “MIST” position and released. This operation is useful when it isdrizzling, etc. The wipers will continue to operate while the lever is held in the “MIST” position.
The windshield wipers can be operated with the ignition switch or the operation mode is inON or ACC. If the blades are frozen to the windshield or rear window, do not operate the wipers untilthe ice has melted and the blades are freed,otherwise the wiper motor may be damaged.
Can only be used when the ignition switch or the operation mode is in ON.If the lever is put in the “AUTO” position, the rain sensor (A) will detect the extent of rain (or snow, other moisture, dust, etc.) and thewipers will operate automatically. Keep the lever in the “OFF” position if the windshield is dirty and the weather is dry.

Wiper operation under these conditions can scratch the windshield and damage the wip- ers.
With the lever in the “AUTO” (rain sensor) position, it is possible to adjust the sensitivityof the rain sensor by turning the knob (B).
CAUTION With the ignition switch or the operation mode in ON and the lever in the “AUTO”position, the wipers may automatically oper- ate in the situations described below.• When cleaning the outside surface of thewindshield, if you touch the rain sensor.• When cleaning the outside surface of thewindshield, if you wipe with a cloth the rain sensor.• When using an automatic car wash.• A physical shock is applied to the wind- shield.• A physical shock is applied to the rain sen-sor.
If your hands get trapped, you could sufferinjuries or the wipers could malfunction. Be sure to turn the ignition switch to the “OFF” position or put the operation mode in OFF, or move the lever to the “OFF” position todeactivate the rain sensor.NOTE
 To protect the rubber parts of the wipers, this operation of the wipers does not take place when the vehicle is stationary and the ambi-ent temperature is about 32 °F (0 °C) or lower.  Do not cover the sensor by affixing a sticker or label to the windshield. Also, do not put any water-repellent coating on the wind-shield. The rain sensor would not be able to detect the extent of rain, and the wipers might stop working normally.  In the following cases, the rain sensor may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle checkedat an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice. • When the wipers operate at a constant inter- val despite changes in the extent of rain. • When the wipers do not operate even though it is raining.CAUTION
 The wipers may automatically operate when things such as insects or foreign objects are affixed to the windshield on top of the rain sensor or when the windshield is frozen. Objects affixed to the windshield will stopthe wipers when the wipers cannot remove them. To operate the wipers again, move the lever to the “LO” or “HI” position.Also, the wipers may operate automatically due to strong direct sunlight or electromag- netic wave. To stop the wipers, move thelever to the “OFF” position.  Contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice when replacing the windshield glass.

Precautions to observe when using wipers and washers
CAUTION If the washer is used in cold weather, the washer fluid sprayed onto the glass might freeze, blocking your view. Heat the glass with the defroster before using the washer.NOTE
 Do not use the wipers when the windshield is dry. This could scratch the glass and wear thewiper blades prematurely.  Before using the wipers in cold weather, check to be sure that the wiper blades are not frozen to the windshield or rear window. Using the wipers while the blades are frozencould cause the wiper motor to burn out.NOTE

The rear window defogger can be used when the engine is running.The indicator light (A) will come on when you press the electric rear window defogger switch. Electric current will flow through theheating wires on the rear window to help clear away moisture or frost.
After about 20 minutes of operation, the sys- tem will shut off automatically. To switch the defogger OFF before 20 min-utes have passed, press the switch again. The indicator light will go out and the defogger will turn off.If you need the defogger for more than 20minutes, press the switch again. This will add 20 more minutes.

To honk the horn, press around the “ ” mark on the steering wheel.
 If the wipers become blocked by ice or other deposits on the glass, the motor may still burn out even if the wiper switch is OFF. If deposits form on the windshield, park your vehicle in a safe place, turn off the engine,and clean the glass so that the wipers can operate smoothly.  Avoid using the washer for more than 20 sec- onds at a time. Do not operate the washer when the washer fluid reservoir is empty orthe pump may fail.  During cold weather, add a recommended washer solution that will not freeze in the washer fluid reservoir. Otherwise the washer may not work or may be damaged.  Replace the wiper blades when they are worn. Use the proper size replacementblades. Electric rear window defog- ger switch
NOTE
CAUTION The rear window defogger is not designed to melt snow. Remove any snow manuallybefore using the rear window defogger. Use the rear window defogger only after the engine has started and is running. Be sure to turn the defogger switch off immediately after the window is clear to save on batterypower.
 Do not place stickers, tape, or other items that are attached with adhesive over the grid wires on the rear window. When cleaning the inside rear window, use a soft cloth and wipe lightly over the grid wires.NOTE
 As your vehicle is equipped with heated mir- rors, mist can also be removed from the out-side rearview mirrors when the rear window defogger switch is pressed. (Refer to “Door mirror heater” on page 5-44.)

Release the lever and lift the engine hood. Support the engine hood with the hood prop. Insert the hood prop securely in the opening under the hood marked with an arrow.
Unlatch the prop from the engine hood and put it back in its retainer. Slowly lower the engine hood about 8 inches (20 cm), then let it drop from its own weight.
NOTE
 To prevent damage to the engine hood and wipers, make sure the wipers are at resting position when you open the engine hood.
CAUTION Always insert the support prop into the hole specially made for it. Propping the engine hood at any other place could cause the prop to slip out and lead to an accident. The hood prop can fall out if the hood is lifted by a strong wind.
To close
CAUTION Be careful not to trap your hands or fingers when closing the engine hood.
 Make sure the engine hood is firmly closed before driving. If you drive without the engine hood com- pletely closed, it could open up while driv- ing.NOTE
 If this does not close the engine hood prop- erly, drop it again from a slightly higher position.  Do not push down strongly on the engine hood. Depending on how strongly or where you push down, you could create a dent inthe vehicle body.  If you drive with the engine hood left open, warning display is displayed on the informa- tion screen in the multi-information display.

Check the parking brake lever travel occa- sionally. To check this, pull the lever up slowly and count the number of clicks of theratchet. You should feel the parking brake grab between 6 to 7 notches (clicks). Also check to see if the lever stays gripped bythe ratchet after pulling.

Check the wiper blades occasionally. Cleanthem regularly to remove deposits of salt androad film. Use a sponge or cloth and a mild detergent or non-abrasive cleaner to clean the blades and glass areas.Replace the blades if they continue to streak or smear. If the blades are frozen to the windshield or rear window, do not operate the wipers until the ice has melted and the blades are freed,otherwise the wiper motor may be damaged.

Generally, the longer any foreign materialstays on the finish, the worse the damage. Wash your vehicle as soon as possible when- ever the finish gets soiled.

Chemicals contained in the dirt and dustpicked up from air, rain, snow, or road sur-faces can damage the paint and body of your vehicle if left on. Frequent washing and waxing is the best wayto protect your vehicle from this damage. Do not wash the vehicle in direct sunlight. Park the vehicle in the shade and spray it withwater to remove dust. Next, using plenty of
clean water and a car washing mitt or sponge, wash the vehicle from top to bottom. Use a mild car washing soap if necessary. Rinse thoroughly and wipe dry with a cham-ois or soft cloth. CAUTION When washing the underside of your vehicle or the wheels, wear a pair of gloves to pro- tect your hands. If your vehicle has rain sensor wipers, place the wiper switch lever in the “OFF” positionto deactivate the rain sensor before washing the vehicle. Otherwise, the wipers will oper- ate in the presence of water spray on thewindshield and may get damaged as a result. Never spray or splash water on the electrical parts in the engine compartment. This may damage them. Be careful also when washing the underbody to ensure that water does notenter the engine compartment. Avoid automatic car washers that use rotat- ing brushes. These brushes may scratch the paint surface and make it dull. Scratches are more noticeable on darker col- ored vehicles.
 Some hot water washing equipment uses high pressure and heat to clean your vehicle. Because hot water can damage plastics parts and seep inside your vehicle, make sure you do the following when using such equip-ment:• Keep the washing nozzle at least 28 inches(70 cm) away from the vehicle body.• When washing around the door glass, holdthe nozzle at a distance of more than 28 inches (70 cm) and at a right angle to the glass surface.
 Make sure to do the following when using an automatic car wash, with help from eitherthis manual or the car wash operator, to avoid damaging your vehicle:• Fold the outside rearview mirrors.• Remove the antenna.• Tape the wiper arm assembly.• If your vehicle is equipped with a rearspoiler or roof rails, check with the car wash operator before using the car wash.• If your vehicle is equipped with the rainsensor wipers, place the wiper switch leverin the “OFF” position to deactivate the rain sensor.
