The Active HeadRestraint movesforward
utilizing theforce thattheseatback receives
from theoccupant inarear-end collision. The
movement ofthe head restraint helpssupport
the occupant's headbyreducing itsbackward
movement andhelping absorbsomeofthe
forces thatmay lead towhiplash-type injuries.
Active HeadRestraints areeffective forcolli-
sions atlow tomedium speedsinwhich itis said
that whiplash injuryoccurs most.
Active HeadRestraints operateonlyincertain
rear-end collisions. Afterthecollision, thehead
restraints returntotheir original positions. The
front head restraints havemultiple adjust-
ment notches.
Properly adjusttheActive HeadRestraints as
described inthis section.

Fastening theseat belts

2. Slowly pulltheseat beltoutofthe retractor
and insert thetongue intothebuckle until
you hear andfeelthelatch engage.

The retractor isdesigned tolock
during asudden stoporon impact.
A slow pulling motion permits the
belt tomove andallows yousome
freedom ofmovement inthe seat.

If the seat beltcannot bepulled from
its fully retracted position,firmlypull
the belt andrelease it.Then
smoothly pullthebelt outofthe
retractor.

3. Position thelapbelt portion lowand snug
on the hips asshown.
4. Pull theshoulder beltportion towardthe
retractor totake upextra slack. Besure the
shoulder beltisrouted overyourshoulder
and across yourchest.
The front passenger seatandtherear seating

of operation:
. Emergency LockingRetractor (ELR)
. Automatic LockingRetractor (ALR)
The Emergency LockingRetractor (ELR)mode
allows theseat belttoextend andretract to

Ð Do not putaseat beltaround
both achild andanother pas-
senger.
Ð NISSAN recommends thatall
child restraints beinstalled in
the rear seat. Studies showthat
children aresafer when properly
restrained inthe rear seat than in
the front seat.Ifyou must
install aforward-facing child
restraint inthe front seat,see
ªForward-facing childrestraint

Ð Even withtheNISSAN Advanced
Air Bag System, neverinstall a
rear-facing childrestraint inthe
front seat.Aninflating airbag
could seriously injureorkill a
child. Arear-facing childre-
straint mustonlybeused inthe
rear seat.
Ð Be sure topurchase achild
restraint thatwillfitthe child
and vehicle. Somechildre-
straints maynotfitproperly in
your vehicle.

also bereferred toas the ISOFIX orISOFIX
compatible system.Withthissystem, youdonot
have touse avehicle seatbelttosecure the
child restraint unlessthecombined weightofthe
child andchild restraint exceeds 65lbs (29.5
kg) .If the combined weightofthe child andchild
restraint isgreater than65lbs (29.5 kg),use the
vehicle's seatbelt(not thelower anchors) to
install thechild restraint. Besure tofollow the child
restraint manufacturer's instructionsfor
installation.

FORW ARD-FACING CHILDRE-

and snug onthe child's hips.Besure to
follow thebooster seatmanufacturer's
instructions foradjusting theseat belt
routing.
5. Pull theshoulder beltportion ofthe seat belt
toward theretractor totake upextra slack.
Be sure theshoulder beltispositioned
across thetop, middle portion ofthe child's
shoulder. Besure tofollow thebooster seat
manufacturer's instructionsforadjusting the
seat beltrouting.
6. Follow thewarnings, cautionsandinstruc-
tions forproperly fastening aseat belt
shown inªSeat beltsº (P.1-10) .

. Do not place objects withsharp
edges onthe seat. Also, donot
place heavy objects onthe seat that
will leave permanent impressions in
the seat. Such objects candamage
the seat oroccupant classification
sensors (weightsensors) .This can
affect theoperation ofthe airbag
system andresult inserious perso-
nal injury.
. Do not use water oracidic cleaners
(hot steam cleaners) onthe seat.
This candamage theseat oroccu-
pant classification sensors.Thiscan
also affect theoperation ofthe air
bag system andresult inserious
personal injury.
. Immediately afterinflation, several
front airbag system components
will behot. Donot touch them; you
may severely burnyourself.
. Nounauthorized changesshouldbe
made toany components orwiring
of the supplemental airbag system.
This isto prevent accidental infla-
tion ofthe supplemental airbag or
damage tothe supplemental airbag
system. .
Do not make unauthorized changes
to your vehicle's electrical system,
suspension systemorfront end
structure. Thiscould affect proper
operation ofthe front airbag sys-
tem.
. Tampering withthefront airbag
system mayresult inserious perso-
nal injury. Tampering includes
changes tothe steering wheeland
the instrument panelassembly by
placing material overthesteering
wheel padand above theinstrument
panel orby installing additional trim
material aroundtheairbag system.
. Removing ormodifying thefront
passenger seatmayaffect thefunc-
tion ofthe airbag system andresult
in serious personal injury.
. Modifying ortampering withthe
front passenger seatmayresult in
serious personal injury.Forexam-
ple, donot change thefront seats by
placing material onthe seat cushion
or by installing additional trimma-
terial, suchasseat covers, onthe
seat thatisnot specifically designed
to assure properairbag operation.
Additionally, donot stow anyob- jects
under thefront passenger seat
or the seat cushion andseatback.
Such objects mayinterfere withthe
proper operation ofthe occupant
classification sensors.
. Nounauthorized changesshouldbe
made toany components orwiring
of the seat beltsystem. Thismay
affect thefront airbag system.
T ampering withtheseat beltsystem
may result inserious personal in-
jury.
. Work onand around thefront air
bag system shouldbedone bya
NISSAN dealer.Installation ofelec-
trical equipment shouldalsobe
done byaNISSAN dealer.The
Supplemental RestraintSystem
(SRS) wiring harnesses* shouldnot
be modified ordisconnected. Un-
authorized electricaltestequipment
and probing devicesshouldnotbe
used onthe airbag system.
. Acracked windshield shouldbe
replaced immediately byaqualified
repair facility. Acracked windshield
could affect thefunction ofthe
supplemental airbag system.
