Do not disassemble ECM.

If a battery cable is disconnected, the memory will return to
the ECM value.
The ECM will now start to self-control at its initial value.
Engine operation can vary slightly when the terminal is dis-
connected. However, this is not an indication of a malfunc-
tion. Do not replace parts because of a slight variation.

If the battery is disconnected, the following emission-
related diagnostic information will be lost within 24 hours.
–Diagnostic trouble codes
–1st trip diagnostic trouble codes
–Freeze frame data
–1st trip freeze frame data

When connecting ECM harness connector, fasten it
securely with levers as far as they will go as shown in the
figure.

When connecting or disconnecting pin connectors into or
from ECM, take care not to damage pin terminals (bend or
break).
Make sure that there are not any bends or breaks on ECM
pin terminal, when connecting pin connectors.

Securely connect ECM harness connectors.
A poor connection can cause an extremely high (surge)
voltage to develop in coil and condenser, thus resulting in
damage to ICs.

Keep engine control system harness at least 10 cm (4 in)
away from adjacent harness, to prevent engine control sys-
tem malfunctions due to receiving external noise, degraded
operation of ICs, etc.

Keep engine control system parts and harness dry.

Before replacing ECM, perform “ECM Terminals and Refer-
ence Value” inspection and make sure ECM functions prop-
erly. Refer to EC-415, "
ECM Terminals and Reference Value"
.

Handle mass air flow sensor carefully to avoid damage.

Do not disassemble mass air flow sensor.

Do not clean mass air flow sensor with any type of deter-
gent.

Do not disassemble electric throttle control actuator.

Even a slight leak in the air intake system can cause seri-
ous incidents.

Do not shock or jar the camshaft position sensor (PHASE), crankshaft position sensor (POS).

17. DETECT MALFUNCTIONING PART
Check the following.

Check camshaft position sensor (PHASE) and circuit. Refer to EC-176 .

Check crankshaft position sensor (POS) and circuit. Refer to EC-169 .
OK or NG
OK >> GO TO 18.
NG >> 1. Repair or replace.
2. GO TO 4.
18. CHECK ECM FUNCTION
1. Substitute another known-good ECM to check ECM function. (ECM may be the cause of an incident, but
this is a rare case.)
2. Perform initialization of NATS system and registration of all NATS ignition key IDs. Refer to BL-139,
"NATS(Nissan Anti-Theft System)" .
>> GO TO 4.

Check idle speed in “DATA MONITOR” mode with CONSULT-II.
Without CONSULT-II
Check the idle speed by installing the pulse type tachometer clamp on the loop wire or on suitable high-tension
wire which installed between No.1 ignition coil and No.1 spark plug.
NOTE:
For the method of installing the tachometer, refer to EC-45, "
IGNITION TIMING" .
IGNITION TIMING
Any of following two methods may be used.
Method A
1. Slide the harness protector of ignition coil No.1 to clear the
wires.
2. Attach timing light to the wire as shown in the figure.

REMOVAL
1. Remove engine cover. Refer to EM-19, "INTAKE MANIFOLD" .
2. Remove ignition coil. Refer to EM-31, "
IGNITION COIL" .
3. Remove spark plug with spark plug wrench (commercial service
tool).
CAUTION:
Do not drop or shock it.
INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL
Use standard type spark plug for normal condition.
Hot type spark plug is suitable when fouling occurs with standard type spark plug under conditions such as:

Frequent engine starts

Low ambient temperatures
Cold type spark plug is suitable when spark plug knock occurs with standard type spark plug under conditions
such as:

Extended highway driving

Frequent high engine revolution

CHECKING COMPRESSION PRESSURE
1. Warm up engine thoroughly. Then, stop it.
2. Release fuel pressure. Refer to EC-49, "
FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE" .
3. Disconnect fuel pump fuse to avoid fuel injection during mea-
surement.
4. Remove engine cover. Refer to EM-19, "
INTAKE MANIFOLD" .
5. Remove ignition coil and spark plug from each cylinder. Refer to EM-31, "
IGNITION COIL" and EM-32,
"SPARK PLUG(PLATINUM-TIPPED TYPE)" .
6. Connect engine tachometer (not required in use of CONSULT-II).
7. Install compression tester with adapter onto spark plug hole.

Use compression gauge whose picking up end inserted to
spark plug hole is smaller than 20 mm (0.79 in) in diameter.
Otherwise, it may be caught by cylinder head during removal.
8. With accelerator pedal fully depressed, turn ignition switch to “START” for cranking. When the gauge
pointer stabilizes, read the compression pressure and engine rpm. Perform these steps to check each cyl-
inder.
Compression pressure:
Unit: kPa (bar, kg/cm2 , psi) /rpm
CAUTION:
Always use a fully changed battery to obtain specified engine speed.

NOTE:
Can be removed and installed even when assembled with cylinder head.
4. Remove front cover and timing chain. Refer to EM-53, "
TIMING CHAIN" .
5. Remove camshafts. Refer to EM-41, "
CAMSHAFT" .
6. Remove cylinder head loosening bolts in reverse order as
shown in the figure.

Using the following tool, loosen cylinder head bolts.
NOTE:
There are two types of cylinder head bolt because of parallel
manufacture.
7. Remove cylinder head gasket.
INSPECTION AFTER REMOVAL
Cylinder Head Bolts Outer Diameter

Cylinder head bolts are tightened by plastic zone tightening
method. Whenever the size difference between “d1” and “d2”
exceeds the limit, replace them with a new one.

If reduction of outer diameter appears in a position other than
“d2”, use it as “d2” point.
NOTE:
When replacing any cylinder head bolts, it is possible to use them
with mixing flange bolt and bolt with washer.
Cylinder Head Distortion
NOTE:
When performing this inspection, cylinder block distortion should be also checking. Refer to EM-102, "
CYLIN-
DER BLOCK DISTORTION" .
1. Wipe off engine oil and remove water scale (like deposit), gasket, sealant, carbon, etc. with scraper.
CAUTION:
Use utmost care not to allow gasket debris to enter passages for engine oil or engine coolant.
2. At each of several locations on bottom surface of cylinder head,
measure the distortion in six directions.

If it exceeds the limit, replace cylinder head.Bolt with washer
: Hexagonal wrench [size 10 mm (0.39 in)]
