CAMSHAFT BRACKET INNER DIAMETER
IInstall camshaft bracket and tighten bolts to the specified
torque.
I Measure inner diameter of camshaft bracket using an inside
micrometer.
Standard: 30.000 - 30.021 mm (1.1811 - 1.1819 in) dia.
CAMSHAFT OIL CLEARANCE CALCULATIONS
Oil clearance = Cam bracket inner diameter þ Cam journal outer
diameter Standard: 0.045 - 0.090 mm (0.0018 - 0.0035 in) dia.
I If it exceeds the standard value, refer to the standard value of
each unit, then replace the camshaft and/or cylinder head.
I As the camshaft bracket is manufactured with the cylinder
head, it is impossible to replace only the camshaft bracket.
CAMSHAFT END PLAY
ISet the dial gauge to the front end of the camshaft. Measure
the end play by moving the camshaft in the direction of the axle.
Standard: 0.065 - 0.169 mm (0.0026 - 0.0067 in)
Limit: 0.2 mm (0.0079 in)
I If end play exceeds the limit, replace camshaft and measure
camshaft end play again.
I If end play still exceeds the limit after replacing camshaft,
replace cylinder head.
VISUAL INSPECTION OF VALVE LIFTER
Check lifter side for any signs of wear or damage. Replace if there
are any abnormalities.
VISUAL INSPECTION OF ADJUSTING SHIM
Check cam nose contact and sliding surfaces for wear and
scratches. Replace if there are any abnormalities.
VALVE LIFTER CLEARANCE
Measure the outer diameter of the valve lifter with a micrometer.
Standard: 34.455 - 34.465 mm (1.3565 - 1.3569 in) dia.

Front Axle and Front Suspension Parts
ICheck front axle and front suspension parts for looseness,
cracks, wear or other damage.
(1) Shake each front wheel.
(2) Make sure that cotter pin is inserted.
(3) Retighten all nuts and bolts to the specified torque.
: Refer to ªFRONT SUSPENSIONº, FA-29.
(4) Check front axle and front suspension parts for wear, cracks or other damage.
I Check shock absorber for oil leakage or other damage.
I Check suspension ball joints for grease leakage and dust cov-
ers for cracks or other damage.
I Check ball joint for vertical end play.
Upper ball joint: 1.6 mm (0.063 in) or less
(1) Jack up front of vehicle and set the stands.
(2) Clamp dial indicator onto transverse link and place indicator tip on lower edge of brake caliper.
(3) Make sure front wheels are straight and brake pedal is depressed.
(4) Place a pry bar between transverse link and inner rim of road wheel.
(5) While pushing and releasing pry bar, observe maximum dial indicator value.
(6) If ball joint movement is beyond specifications, remove and recheck it.

Lower ball joint:0.5 mm (0.020 in) or less
(1) Jack up front of vehicle and set the stands.
(2) Remove road wheel.
(3) Clamp dial indicator onto upper link and place indicator tip on knuckle near ball joint.
(4) Jack up lower link [Approx. 20 mm (0.79 in)].
(5) Place a pry bar between upper link and upper link spindle.
(6) While pushing and releasing pry bar observe maximum dial indicator value.
(7) If ball joint movement is beyond specifications, remove and recheck it.
Front Wheel Bearing
ICheck that wheel bearings operate smoothly.
I Check axial end play.
Axial end play: 0 mm (0 in)
I Adjust wheel bearing preload if there is any axial end play or
wheel bearing does not turn smoothly.
PRELOAD ADJUSTMENT
Adjust wheel bearing preload after wheel bearing has been
replaced or front axle has been reassembled.
Adjust wheel bearing preload as follows:
1. Before adjustment, thoroughly clean all parts to prevent dirt
entry.
2. Apply multi-purpose grease sparingly to the following parts:
I Threaded portion of spindle
I Contact surface between wheel bearing washer and outer
wheel bearing
I Grease seal lip
I Wheel hub (as shown at left)

Removal and Installation
ISet the auto-lock free-running hub at the condition ªFreeº.
I Remove auto-lock free-running hub with brake pedal
depressed.
I Remove snap ring.
I Remove washer B, washer A and brake B.
I After installing auto-lock free-running hub, check operation.
When installing it, apply recommended grease to drive shaft
end.
Inspection
Thoroughly clean parts and dry with compressed air.
Brake ªAº and ªBº
Measure the thickness ªLº of brake ªAº and ªBº.
If thickness is less than the specified limit, replace brake ªAº and
ªBº as a set. Wear limit ªLº = 15.4 mm (0.606 in)

Trouble-shooting
Noise occurring in the auto hub under any of the conditions
described is not indicative of a problem. Noise can be eliminated
by properly operating the transfer lever of the vehicle.
Noise
Was the transfer lever shifted from
the ª2Hº to the ª4Hº position while
the vehicle was operated at a
speed greater than 40 km/h (25
MPH)?
No
EYe sShifting the transfer lever from the
ª2Hº to the ª4Hº position in high-
speed operation (Fig.
,Fig.
), is sometimes difficult. At this
point, a clattering occurs in the
auto hub. If shifting is stopped
halfway, the drive shaft no longer
rotates and the cam is held in the
ªLOCKº position (Fig.
). In this
case, the noise will continue until
the vehicle is stopped. When this
occurs, decrease vehicle speed to
less than 40 km/h (25 MPH),
return the transfer lever to the
ª2Hº position once and then
reshift to the ª4Hº position.
Gears will then be engaged and
the noise will cease (Fig.
).
Was the transfer lever shifted from
the ª2Hº to the ª4Hº position while
the vehicle was operated at a
speed less than 40 km/h (25
MPH)?
No
EYe s When noise occurs in the auto
hub while shifting from the ª2Hº to
the ª4Hº position (Fig.
,Fig.
), do not stop shifting halfway.
When shifted to the ª4Hº position,
the ª4WDº pilot lamp will come on
to indicate that the gears are
engaged properly and that the
vehicle is set in the 4WD mode.
Noise will then cease (Fig.
). If
shifting is stopped halfway, noise
will continue.
In such a case, return the transfer
lever to the ª2Hº position once
and re-shift it to the ª4Hº position.
Gears will then be engaged and
the noise will cease (Fig.
). (If
the lever is left in the ª2Hº
position, the noise will continue
until the vehicle is stopped.)
