PRECAUTIONS
Precaution for Supplemental Restraint Syst em (SRS) "AIR BAG" and "SEAT BELT
PRE-TENSIONER" INFOID:0000000004784402
The Supplemental Restraint System such as “A IR BAG” and “SEAT BELT PRE-TENSIONER”, used along
with a front seat belt, helps to reduce the risk or severi ty of injury to the driver and front passenger for certain
types of collision. This system includes seat belt switch inputs and dual stage front air bag modules. The SRS
system uses the seat belt switches to determine the front air bag deployment, and may only deploy one front
air bag, depending on the severity of a collision and w hether the front occupants are belted or unbelted.
Information necessary to service the system safely is included in the SRS and SB section of this Service Man-
ual.
WARNING:
• To avoid rendering the SRS inopera tive, which could increase the risk of personal injury or death in
the event of a collision which would result in air bag inflation, all maintenance must be performed by
an authorized NISS AN/INFINITI dealer.
• Improper maintenance, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS can lead to personal
injury caused by unintent ional activation of the system. For re moval of Spiral Cable and Air Bag
Module, see the SRS section.
• Do not use electrical test equipmen t on any circuit related to the SRS unless instructed to in this
Service Manual. SRS wiring harn esses can be identified by yellow and/or orange harnesses or har-
ness connectors.
PRECAUTIONS WHEN USING POWER TOOLS (AIR OR ELECTRIC) AND HAMMERS
WARNING:
• When working near the Airbag Diagnosis Sensor Unit or other Airbag System sensors with the Igni-
tion ON or engine running, DO NOT use air or electri c power tools or strike near the sensor(s) with a
hammer. Heavy vibration could activate the sensor( s) and deploy the air bag(s), possibly causing
serious injury.
• When using air or electric power tools or hammers , always switch the Ignition OFF, disconnect the
battery, and wait at least 3 minu tes before performing any service.
Precaution for Brake System INFOID:0000000004307251
CAUTION:
• Refer to MA-14 for recommended brake fluid.
• Never reuse drained brake fluid.
• Be careful not to splash brake fluid on painted areas; it may cause paint damage. If brake fluid is
splashed on painted areas, wash it away with water immediately.
• To clean or wash all parts of master cylin der and disc brake caliper, use clean brake fluid.
• Never use mineral oils such as gasoline or kerosene. They will ruin rubber parts of the hydraulic sys-
tem.
• Use flare nut wrench when re moving and installing brake
tube.
• If a brake fluid leak is found, the part must be disassembled
without fail. Then it has to be replaced with a new one if a
defect exists.
• Turn the ignition switch OFF an d remove the connector of the
ABS actuator and electric unit (c ontrol unit) or the battery ter-
minal before performing the work.
• Always torque brake lines when installing.
• Burnish the brake contact surf aces after refinishing or replac-
ing rotors, after replacing pads, or if a soft pedal occurs at
very low mileage. Refer to BR-32, " Brake Burnishing Proce-
dure " .
WARNING:
• Clean brake pads and shoes with a waste cloth, then wipe with a dust collector. SBR686C

Precaution for Procedure without Cowl Top Cover INFOID:0000000004305163
When performing the procedure after removing cowl top cover, cover
the lower end of windshield with urethane, etc.

• Use recommended brake fluid when adding flui d to the clutch reservoir tank. Refer to MA-14 .
• Never reuse fluid drained from clutch system.
• Be careful not to splash brake fluid on painted areas.
• Use new brake fluid to clean or wash all part s of master cylinder and operating cylinder.
• Never use mineral oils such as gasoline or kerosene. It will ruin the rubber parts of the hydraulic sys-
tem.
• If transaxle assembly is removed from the vehicle , always replace CSC (Concentric slave cylinder).
Return CSC to original position to remove transaxle assembly. Dust on clutch disc sliding parts may
damage CSC seal and may cause clutch fluid leakage.
• Do not disassemble clutch master cylinder and CSC.
WARNING:
After cleaning clutch disc, clean it with a dust collector. Do not use compressed air. PIIB3706J

Precaution Necessary for Steering Wh eel Rotation After Battery Disconnect

NOTE:
• This Procedure is applied only to models with Inte lligent Key system and NATS (NISSAN ANTI-THEFT SYS-
TEM).
• Remove and install all control units after disconnecti ng both battery cables with the ignition knob in the
″ LOCK ″ position.
• Always use CONSULT-III to perform self-diagnosis as a part of each function inspection after finishing work.
If DTC is detected, perform trouble diagnosis according to self-diagnostic results.
For models equipped with the Intelligent Key system and NATS , an electrically controlled steering lock mech-
anism is adopted on the key cylinder.
For this reason, if the battery is disconnected or if the battery is discharged, the steering wheel will lock and
steering wheel rotation will become impossible.
If steering wheel rotation is required when battery pow er is interrupted, follow the procedure below before
starting the repair operation.
OPERATION PROCEDURE 1. Connect both battery cables. NOTE:
Supply power using jumper cables if battery is discharged.
2. Use the Intelligent Key or mechanical key to turn the ignition switch to the ″ACC ″ position. At this time, the
steering lock will be released.
3. Disconnect both battery cables. The steering lock will remain released and the steering wheel can be
rotated.
4. Perform the necessary repair operation.
5. When the repair work is completed, return the ignition switch to the ″LOCK ″ position before connecting
the battery cables. (At this time, the steering lock mechanism will engage.)
6. Perform a self-diagnosis check of al l control units using CONSULT-III.

ENGINE COOLANT

LEVEL CHECK • Check if the reservoir tank engine coolant level is within the “MIN” to “MAX” range when engine is cool.
• Adjust the engine coolant level as necessary.
CHECKING COOLING SYSTEM FOR LEAKS To check for leaks, apply pressure to the cooling system using suit-
able tool and Tool.
WARNING:
Never remove the radiator cap wh en the engine is hot. Serious
burns could occur from high pressure coolant escaping from
the radiator.
CAUTION:
Higher pressure than specified may cause radiator damage.
Changing Engine Coolant INFOID:0000000004784398
WARNING:
• To avoid being scalded, do not change engine coolant when engine is hot.
• Wrap a thick cloth around radiator cap and carefully remove the cap. First, turn the cap a quarter of a
turn to release built-up pressure. Then turn the cap all the way.
CAUTION:
• Do not spill engine coolant on drive belt.
DRAINING ENGINE COOLANT 1. Open radiator drain plug (1) at the bottom of radiator, and then remove radiator cap.
• Front
When draining all of engine coolant in the system, open
water drain plug on cylinder block. Refer to EM-96 .
CAUTION:
• Perform this step when engine is cold.
• Do not spill engine coolant on drive belt.
2. Remove reservoir tank as necessary, and drain engi ne coolant and clean reservoir tank before installing.
Refer to CO-16, " Component " .
3. Check drained engine coolant for contaminants such as rust, corrosion or discoloration. PBIC3799E

Do not remove radiator cap when the engine is
hot. Serious burns could occur from high-pressure
engine coolant escaping from radiator. Wrap a thick cl oth around the cap. Slowly turn it a quarter of a
turn to release built-up pressure. Carefully remove radiator cap by turning it all the way.
REMOVAL 1. Drain engine coolant from radiator. Refer to CO-11, " Changing Engine Coolant " .
CAUTION:
• Perform this step when engine is cold.
• Do not spill engine coolant on drive belt.
2. Remove air duct (inlet). Refer to EM-26, " Exploded View " .
3. Remove reservoir tank as follows:
a. Disconnect reservoir tank hose.
b. Release the tab (A) in the direction shown by the arrow ( ).
c. Lift up while removing the reservoir tank hose, and remove it.
4. Disconnect harness connector from fan motor, and move harness aside.
5. Disconnect A/T fluid cooler hoses if equipped. • Install plug to avoid leakage of A/T fluid if equipped.
6. Remove radiator hoses (upper and lower).
7. Remove radiator core support cover.
8. Remove radiator core support (upper) bolts, bolts of stationary part on the radiator core support side and clip. Lift radiator
assembly (1) from radiator (upper) mount part of radiator core
support (upper) (2).
9. Move radiator assembly (1) to the rearward direction of vehicle, and then lift it upward to remove.
CAUTION:
Do not damage or scratch A/C condenser if equipped and
radiator core when removing.
INSTALLATION Installation is the reverse order of removal.
CAUTION:
Do not damage or scratch A/C condenser if equipped and radiator core when removing.
INSPECTION AFTER INSTALLATION • Check for leaks of engine coolant. Refer to CO-11, " Inspection " .
• Start and warm up engine. Visually check if there is no leaks of engine coolant and A/T fluid if equipped.
Refer to CO-11, " Inspection " and
AT-17, " Checking A/T Fluid " .

Removal and Installation

REMOVAL 1. Drain engine coolant from radiator. Refer to CO-11, " Changing Engine Coolant " .
CAUTION:
• Perform this step when engine is cold.
• Do not spill engine coolant on drive belt.
2. Remove air duct (inlet). Refer to EM-26, " Exploded View " .
3. Remove reservoir tank.
4. Disconnect radiator hose (upper) at radiator side. Refer to CO-16, " Component " .
5. Disconnect harness connectors from fan motor, and move harness to aside.
6. Remove cooling fan assembly. CAUTION:
Be careful not to damage or scratch the radiator core.
INSTALLATION Installation is the reverse order of removal.
• Cooling fans are controlled by ECM. For details, refer to EC-422, " Description " .
CAUTION:
Be careful not to damage or scratch the radiator core.

Changing Engine Coolant " .
CAUTION:
• Perform this step when the engine is cold.
• Never spill engine coolant on drive belts.
2. Steer front wheel to the right.
3. Remove front fender protector (RH). Refer to EI-24, " Removal and Installation " .
4. Loosen mounting bolts of water pump pulley before loosening belt tension of drive belt.
5. Remove drive belt. Refer to EM-15, " Removal and Installation " .
6. Remove water pump pulley.
7. Remove water pump. • Loosen mounting bolts in reverse order as shown.
• Engine coolant will leak from cylinder block, so have a recep-
tacle ready below.
CAUTION:
• Handle water pump vane so that it does not contact any
other parts.
• Water pump cannot be disassembled and should be replaced as a unit.
INSTALLATION
Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
