“COMBINATION METER (SECURITY) DOES NOT LIGHT UP”
1. CHECK FUSE
Check 10A fuse [No.13, located in the fuse block (J/B)]
OK or NG
OK >> GO TO 2.
NG >> Replace fuse.
2. CHECK COMBINATION METER (SECURITY)
1. Install 10A fuse.
2. Start engine and turn ignition switch OFF.
3. Check if the combination meter (security) lights up.
OK or NG
OK >> INSPECTION END.
NG >> GO TO 3.
3. CHECK COMBINATION METER (SECURITY) POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT
1. Disconnect combination meter (security) connector.
2. Check voltage between combination meter (security) connector and ground.
OK or NG
OK >> GO TO 4.
NG >> Check harness for open or short between fuse and com-
bination meter (security).
4. CHECK BCM FUNCTION
1. Connect combination meter (security) connector.
2. Disconnect BCM connector.
3. Check voltage between BCM connector and ground.
OK or NG
OK >> BCM is malfunctioning.

Replace BCM. Refer to BCS-25, "Removal and Instal-
lation of BCM" .

Perform initialization with CONSULT-II

For initialization, refer to “CONSULT-II Operation
Manual NATS”
NG >> Check the following.

Harness for open or short between combination meter (security) and BCM

2. Are there any self-diagnostic items, other than those relating to CAN communication system, in the self-
diagnosis results?

If YES, GO TO 3.

If NO, GO TO 4.
3. Based on self-diagnosis results unrelated to CAN communication, carry out the inspection.
4. Malfunctions may be detected in self-diagnosis depending on control units carrying out CAN communica-
tion. Therefore, erase the self-diagnosis results.
5. Diagnose CAN communication system. Refer to LAN-44, "
TROUBLE DIAGNOSIS" .
Precautions for Brake ControlEFS006LA

During ABS operation, the brake pedal may vibrate lightly and a mechanical noise may be heard. This is
normal.

Just after starting the vehicle, the brake pedal may vibrate or motor operating noises may be heard from
engine compartment. This is normal due to the self check operation.

Stopping distance may be longer than that of vehicles without ABS when vehicle drives on rough, gravel,
or snow-covered (fresh, deep snow) roads.

When an error is indicated by ABS or another warning lamp, collect all necessary information from cus-
tomer (what symptoms are present under what conditions) and check for simple causes before starting
diagnosis. Besides electrical system inspection, check brake booster operation, brake fluid level, and fluid
leaks.

If incorrect tire sizes or types are installed on the vehicle or brake pads are not Genuine NISSAN parts,
stopping distance or steering stability may deteriorate.

If there is a radio, antenna or related wiring near the control module, ABS function may have a malfunction
or error.

If aftermarket parts (car stereo, CD player, etc.) have been installed, check for incidents such as harness
pinches, open circuits or improper wiring.
Precautions for CAN SystemEFS006LB

Do not apply voltage of 7.0V or higher to terminal to be measured.

Maximum open terminal voltage of tester in use must be less than 7.0V.

Before checking harnesses, turn ignition switch OFF and disconnect battery negative cable.

Area to be repaired must be soldered and wrapped with tape.
Make sure that fraying of twisted wire is within 110 mm (4.33 in).

Do not make a bypass connection to repaired area. (If the circuit
is bypassed, characteristics of twisted wire will be lost.)

The Anti-Lock Brake System detects wheel revolution while braking and improves handling stability during
sudden braking by electrically preventing wheel lockup. Maneuverability is also improved for avoiding
obstacles during emergency braking.

If the electrical system malfunctions, the Fail-Safe function is activated, the ABS becomes inoperative and
the ABS warning lamp turns on.

The electrical system can be diagnosed using CONSULT-II.

Electronic Brake Distribution is a function that detects subtle slippages between the front and rear wheels
during braking, and it improves handling stability by electronically controlling the brake fluid pressure
which results in reduced rear wheel slippage.

If the electrical system malfunctions, the Fail-Safe function is activated, the EBD and ABS become inoper-
ative, and the ABS warning lamp and brake warning lamp are turned on.

The electrical system can be diagnosed using CONSULT-II.

During EBD operation, the brake pedal may vibrate lightly and a mechanical noise may be heard. This is
normal.

Just after starting the vehicle, the brake pedal may vibrate or motor operating noises may be heard from
the engine compartment. This is normal due to the self check operation.

Precautions for On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System of CVT and EngineUCS005XG
The ECM has an on board diagnostic system. It will light up the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) to warn the
driver of a malfunction causing emission deterioration.
CAUTION:

Be sure to turn the ignition switch OFF and disconnect the battery cable from the negative termi-
nal before any repair or inspection work. The open/short circuit of related switches, sensors, sole-
noid valves, etc. will cause the MIL to light up.

Be sure to connect and lock the connectors securely after work. A loose (unlocked) connector will
cause the MIL to light up due to an open circuit. (Be sure the connector is free from water, grease,
dirt, bent terminals, etc.)

Be sure to route and secure the harnesses properly after work. Interference of the harness with a
bracket, etc. may cause the MIL to light up due to a short circuit.

Be sure to connect rubber tubes properly after work. A misconnected or disconnected rubber tube
may cause the MIL to light up due to a malfunction of the EVAP system or fuel injection system,
etc.

Be sure to erase the unnecessary malfunction information (repairs completed) from the TCM and
ECM before returning the vehicle to the customer.
Service After Replacing TCM and Transaxle Assembly UCS006L3
SERVICE AFTER REPLACING TCM AND TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY
Perform the applicable service in the following sheet when replacing TCM or transaxle assembly
CAUTION:

Do not start the engine until the service is completed.

“A/T C/U POWER SUPPLY [P1701]” may be indicated soon after replacing TCM or transaxle
assembly (after erasing the memory at the pattern B). Restart the self-diagnosis after erasing the
self-diagnosis result. Check that no error is detected.
NOTE:
Old unit means that the unit has been already used for another vehicle.
PATTERN A
1. Shift the selector lever to “P” position after replacing TCM. Turn the ignition switch ON.
2. Check that the shift position indicator in the combination meter turns ON (It indicates approximately 1 or 2
seconds after turning the ignition switch ON.)

Check the following items if the shift position indicator does not turn ON. Repair or replace the shift
position indicator if necessary.
–The harness between TCM and ROM ASSY in the transaxle assembly is open or short.
–Cable disconnected, loosen, or bent from the connector housing.
PATTERN B
1. Turn the ignition switch ON after replacing each part.
2. Connect CONSULT-II connector to data link connector. Refer to GI-38, "
CONSULT-II Start Procedure" .
3. Start engine.
CAUTION:
Do not start the driving.
4. Touch CONSULT-II screen in the order of “START (NISSAN BASED VHCL)”, “TRANSMISSION”, “DATA
MONITOR”, and “MAIN SIGNALS”.
5. Warm up the transaxle assembly until “ATF TEMP” indicates 48 (approximately 20°C) or more. Turn the
ignition switch OFF.

6. Turn the ignition switch ON.
CAUTION:
Do not start engine.
7. Select “SELF-DIAG RESULTS”.
8. Shift the selector lever to “R” position.
9. Depress slightly the accelerator pedal (Pedal angle: 2/8) while depressing the brake pedal.
10. Perform “ERASE”.
11. Shift the selector lever to “R” position after replacing TCM. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
12. Wait approximately 10 minutes after turning the ignition switch OFF.
13. Turn the ignition switch ON while shifting the selector lever to “R” position.
CAUTION:
Do not start engine.
14. Select “CALIBRATION DATA”.
15. Check that the value on “CALIBRATION DATA” is same as the data after erasing CVT-11, "
Calibration
Data" .

Restart the procedure from step 3 if the values are not same.
16. Shift the selector lever to “P” position.
17. Check that the shift position indicator in the combination meter turns ON (It indicates approximately 1 or 2
seconds after shifting the selector lever to “P” position.)

Check the following items if the shift position indicator does not turn ON. Repair or replace the shift
position indicator if necessary.
–The harness between TCM and ROM ASSY in the transaxle assembly is open or short.
–Cable disconnected, loosen, or bent from the connector housing.
–Power supply and ground of TCM. Refer to CVT-145, "DTC P1701 TRANSMISSION CONTROL MOD-
ULE (POWER SUPPLY)" .

DESCRIPTION
The MIL is located on the instrument panel.
1. The MIL will light up when the ignition switch is turned ON with-
out the engine running. This is a bulb check.

If the MIL does not light up, refer to DI-24, "WAR NIN G
LAMPS" , or see EC-592, "MIL AND DATA LINK CONNEC-
TOR" .
2. When the engine is started, the MIL should go off.
If the MIL remains on, the on board diagnostic system has
detected an engine system malfunction.

The ECM has an on board diagnostic system, which detects malfunctions related to engine sensors or actua-
tors. The ECM also records various emission-related diagnostic information including:
The above information can be checked using procedures listed in the table below.

*: When DTC and 1st trip DTC simultaneously appear on the display, they cannot be clearly distinguished from each other.
The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on the instrument panel lights up when the same malfunction is detected
in two consecutive trips (Two trip detection logic), or when the ECM enters fail-safe mode.
(Refer to EC-91, "
Fail-Safe Chart" .)
Two Trip Detection LogicUBS00QBG
When a malfunction is detected for the first time, 1st trip DTC and 1st trip Freeze Frame data are stored in the
ECM memory. The MIL will not light up at this stage. <1st trip>
If the same malfunction is detected again during the next drive, the DTC and Freeze Frame data are stored in
the ECM memory, and the MIL lights up. The MIL lights up at the same time when the DTC is stored. <2nd
trip> The “trip” in the “Two Trip Detection Logic” means a driving mode in which self-diagnosis is performed
during vehicle operation. Specific on board diagnostic items will cause the ECM to light up or blink the MIL,
and store DTC and Freeze Frame data, even in the 1st trip, as shown below.

When there is an open circuit on MIL circuit, the ECM cannot warn the driver by MIL lighting up when there is
malfunction on engine control system.

The emission related diagnostic information in the ECM can be erased by selecting Service $04 with GST.
NOTE:
If the DTC is not for A/T or CVT related items (see EC-8, "
INDEX FOR DTC" ), skip step 2.
1. If the ignition switch stays ON after repair work, be sure to turn ignition switch OFF once.
Wait at least 10 seconds and then turn it ON (engine stopped) again.
2. Perform AT- 4 1 , "
HOW TO ERASE DTC (WITH GST)" or CVT-32, "HOW TO ERASE DTC (WITH GST)"
(The DTC in the TCM will be erased.)
3. Select Service $04 with GST (Generic Scan Tool).
No Tools
NOTE:
If the DTC is not for A/T or CVT related items (see EC-8, "
INDEX FOR DTC" ), skip step 2.
1. If the ignition switch stays ON after repair work, be sure to turn ignition switch OFF once.
Wait at least 10 seconds and then turn it ON (engine stopped) again.
2. Perform AT-42, "

3. Change the diagnostic test mode from Mode II to Mode I by depressing the accelerator pedal.

If the battery is disconnected, the emission-related diagnostic information will be lost within 24
hours.

The following data are cleared when the ECM memory is erased.

–System readiness test (SRT) codes
–Test values
Actual work procedures are explained using a DTC as an example. Be careful so that not only the DTC, but all
of the data listed above, are cleared from the ECM memory during work procedures.

DESCRIPTION

ON BOARD DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM FUNCTION
The on board diagnostic system has the following three functions.
When there is an open circuit on MIL circuit, the ECM cannot warn the driver by MIL lighting up when there is
malfunction on engine control system.
Therefore, when electrical controlled throttle and part of ECM related diagnoses are continuously detected as
NG for 5 trips, ECM warns the driver that engine control system malfunctions and MIL circuit is open by means
of operating fail-safe function.
The fail-safe function also operates when above diagnoses except MIL circuit are detected, and demands the
driver to repair the malfunction.
MIL Flashing Without DTC
When any SRT codes are not set, MIL may flash without DTC. For the details, refer to EC-56, "How to Display
SRT Status" .
HOW TO SWITCH DIAGNOSTIC TEST MODE
NOTE:

It is better to count the time accurately with a clock.

It is impossible to switch the diagnostic mode when an accelerator pedal position sensor circuit
has a malfunction.

Always ECM returns to Diagnostic Test Mode I after ignition switch is turned OFF.
How to Set Diagnostic Test Mode II (Self-diagnostic Results)
1. Confirm that accelerator pedal is fully released, turn ignition switch ON and wait 3 seconds.
2. Repeat the following procedure quickly five times within 5 seconds.
a. Fully depress the accelerator pedal.
b. Fully release the accelerator pedal.
3. Wait 7 seconds, fully depress the accelerator pedal and keep it for approx. 10 seconds until the MIL starts
blinking.
