Q: If I’m a good driver, and I never drive far from
A: You may be an excellent driver, but if you’re in an
home, why should I wear safety belts?
accident -- even one that isn’t your fault -- you and
your passengers can be hurt. Being a good driver
doesn’t protect you from things beyond your
control, such as bad drivers.
Most accidents occur within
25 miles (40 km) of
home. And the greatest number of serious injuries
and deaths occur at speeds of less than
40 mph
(65 kdh).
Safety belts
are for everyone.
How to Wear Safety Belts Properly
Adults
This part is only for people of adult size.
Be aware that there
are special things to know about safety
belts and children. And there are different rules for smaller
children and babies. If a child will be riding
in your
vehicle, see the part of this manual called “Children.”
Follow those rules for everyone’s protection. First, you’ll want to know which restraint systems your
vehicle has.
We’ll start with the driver position.
Driver Position
This part describes the driver’s restraint system.
Lap-Shoulder Belt
The driver has a lap-shoulder belt. Here’s how to wear
it properly.
1. Close and lock the door.
2. Adjust the seat (to see how, see “Seats” in the Index)
so you can sit up straight.

The best way to protect the fetus is to protect the
mother. When a safety belt is worn properly, it’s more
likely that the fetus won’t be hurt in a crash. For
pregnant women, as for anyone, the key to making
safety belts effective
is wearing them properly.
Right Front Passenger Position
To learn how to wear the right front passenger’s
safety belt properly, see “Driver Position” earlier
in
this section.
The right front passenger’s safety belt works the same
way as the driver’s safety belt
-- except for one thing. If
you ever pull the shoulder portion of the belt out all the
way, you will engage the child restraint locking feature.
If this happens, just let the belt
go back all the way and
start again.
Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS)
This part explains the frontal and side impact
Supplemental Restraint Systems (SRS) or
air bag systems.
Your vehicle has four air bags
-- a “Next Generation”
reduced-force frontal air bag for the driver, another
“Next Generation” reduced-force frontal frontal air bag
for the right front passenger, a side impact air bag for
the driver, and another side impact air bag for the right
front passenger. Reduced-force
frontal air bags are designed to help
reduce the risk of injury from the force of an inflating
frontal air bag. But even these air bags must inflate very
quickly if they are
to do their job and comply with
federal regulations.
Here are the most imponant things to know about the air
bag systems:
A “I C’ u T1C”T:
rn
You can be severely injured or killed in a crash if
you aren’t wearing your safety belt
-- even if you
have air bags. Wearing your safety belt during
a
crash helps reduce your chance of hitting things
inside the vehicle or being ejected from
it. Air
bags are “supplemental restraints” to the safety
belts.
All air bags -- even reduced-force air
bags
-- are designed to work with safety belts but
don’t replace them.

4. Pull the rest of the shoulder belt all the way out of
the retractor to set the lock.
5. To tighten the belt, feed the shoulder belt back into
the retractor while you push down on the child
restraint.
If you’re using a forward-facing child
restraint, you may find it helpful to use your knee to
push down on the child restraint as you tighten
the belt.
6. Push and pull the child restraint in different
directions to be sure it is secure.

Door Locks
I-
Unlocked doors can be dangerous.
Passengers
-- especially children -- can easily
open the doors and fall out. When a door is
locked, the inside handle won’t open it.
Outsiders can easily enter through an unlocked
door when you slow down
or stop your vehicle.
This may not be
so obvious: You increase the
chance of being thrown out of the vehicle in
a
crash if the doors aren’t locked. Wear safety belts
properly, lock your doors, and you will be far
better
off whenever you drive your vehicle. There
are several ways to lock and unlock your vehicle.
From the outside, use your key or the remote lock
control transmitter (if your vehicle
has this option).
To unlock either front door from the outside with the
key, insert the key and turn it toward the front
of
the vehicle.
You can lock either front door from the outside with
your key by inserting
and turning it toward the rear of
the vehicle.

Power Sliding Door (Option)
With this option, you can open and close the sliding
door with the switches inside your vehicle.
If you have
the optional remote lock control system,
you can also
operate the power sliding door with your remote
transmitter. See “Remote Lock Control” in the Index.
/1 CAUTION: rn
Leaving young children or pets unattended in
your vehicle can be dangerous. They could
operate the power sliding door.
A child or others
could be injured.
Do not leave children or pets
unattended in your vehicle.

door, the power sliding door
override switch must be
disabled. This switch is
located in the overhead
console switchbank.
I
Pushing the bottom of the button will disable the power
sliding door; it will not operate when either of the power
door switches or the power sliding door button on the
remote transmitter is pressed.
The power sliding door override switch will also stop
the door immediately, while the door is opening or
closing, when the override feature is enabled.

NOTICE:
When your vehicle goes through an automatic
car wash, be sure the power sliding door override
feature is enabled.
If it isn’t, the power sliding
door
may open accidentally.

The sliding door must be unlocked for it to operate. The
key does not have to be in the ignition. To help avoid
accidental operation of the sliding door, disable the
power sliding door by pushing the power sliding door
override switch.
When the key is in the ignition in RUN, the power
sliding door will only open if the transaxle
is in
PARK (P). The transaxle does not have to be in
PARK (P) to close the door.
If the override feature is not enabled and the power
sliding door is open or in the process of closing when
you shift out of PARK (P), a buzzer will sound. This is a
warning that the sliding door is not completely closed.
To open or close the sliding door, press and release one
of the two power door switches.
One
is mounted on the wall, just in front of the
passenger’s side sliding door. The other switch
is located
in the overhead console switchbank.
If you shift the transaxle out of PARK (P) and
accelerate before the power sliding door latches
closed, the door may reverse to the open position.
A child or others could fall out of the vehicle and
be injured. Always make sure the power sliding
door
is closed and latched before you drive away.

Resetting the Power Sliding Door
The power sliding door may operate incorrectly or not at
all because of the following conditions:
A low voltage or dead battery,
Disconnecting the battery or
If the IGN 1, B/U LAMP, RADIO or PWR
SEATPSD fuse is removed or blown.
See “Fuse Panel” in the Index for more information
about your fuse panel.
If any of these conditions occur, the power sliding door
will need to be reset.
To do this, follow the directions
listed here. It will be easier if you read through them
once before beginning this procedure.
1. Check to be sure the power sliding door is unlocked
2. Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
and securely closed.
3. Enable the power sliding door override feature.

If the door does not rest in the fully open position after
repeating Step
7, repeat Steps 7 and 8 again. If the
door still does not operate correctly, see your retailer
for service.
Sliding Door Security Lock
Your vehicle is equipped with a sliding door security
lock that helps prevent young children or other
passengers from opening the sliding door by using the
inside door handle. This lock is on both doors if your
vehicle has the dual sliding doors.
If you have the optional power sliding door, you can
override the security lock by pressing either power door
switch when the power sliding door override feature is
disabled. See “Power Sliding Door” earlier in
the section.
