Make a careful note of the
number on each key. The keynumber is coded on the label
attached to the key. If the
keys are lost, your PEUGEOT dealercan rapidly supply you with new keys.The high frequency remote control is ahigh-performance system which has apowerful beam.Do not operate it while it is in yourpocket as there is a possibility that itmay unlock your vehicle, without youbeing aware of it.The remote control does not operatewhen the key is in the ignition, evenwhen the ignition is switched off,except for reprogramming.As a safety precaution (with childrenon board), remove the ignition keywhen you leave the vehicle, even for ashort time.Do not repeatedly press the button ofyour remote control out of range of
your vehicle. You risk causing it not towork and the remote control wouldhave to be reprogrammed. When purchasing a second-hand vehicle:
Ð ensure that you are given the confi- dential card;
Ð have the key codes memorised by a PEUGEOT dealer, to ensure that thekeys in your possession are the onlyones which can start the vehicle.
Do not make any modifications to theelectronic engine immobiliser system.
Confidential card The confidential card contains the identification code necessary for anywork carried out by a PEUGEOT
dealer on the system. This code ishidden by a film which should be
removed only if necessary. Keep your card in a safe place, never inside the vehicle.
ELECTRONIC ENGINE IMMOBILISER This locks the engine maoagement system as soon as the ignition has
been switched off and therefore pre-vents starting of the vehicle by any-
one who does not have the key. The ignition key has an electronic chip which has a special code.When the ignition is switched on, the
code is recognised and starting is
possible. If the system does not function correctly , you are warned by an
audible signal and a message on the
multifunction display. In this case, the vehicle will not start.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer as soon as possible.

THE DOORS
The front doors (saloon and 206 SW)
The rear doors (206 SW) Opening the doors from outside CHILD SAFETY LOCK On each rear door this prevents opening of the door from the inside.

"Door open" warning
With the engine running,
you are
warned if a door is not shut properly by an audible signal and a messageor graphic on the multifunction dis-
play, indicating the door in question. In addition, when the vehicle is
moving , if the courtesy light button
is in the "lighting on opening a door" position, the courtesy light flashes.
Opening the doors from inside Locking from inside
Without central locking
To lock, press button A. The button
locks the door in question. The button on the driver's door locks
the door, the tailgate and the rearscreen (206 SW).
With central locking
To lock, press button A.
Locking one of the front doors locks the front and rear doors, the tailgateand the rear screen (206 SW). On the rear doors, the button only locks the door in question. Unlocking from inside
To unlock, pull button Aor operate
the handle.

TAILGATE RELEASE (saloon) This enables the tailgate to be unlocked in the event of a centrallocking fault.
Ð Fold back the rear seats to gain access to the boot from inside the vehicle,
Ð Pull the tailgate trim to release it,
Ð Pull the opening catch 1upwards.
SUNROOF (saloon)
To open Press part Bof the switch. The sun-
roof will open in the intermediate
(comfort) position. To open com-
pletely, press part Bagain.
To close Press part Aof the switch. The sun-
roof will close in the intermediate
(comfort) position. To close com-
pletely, press part Aagain.
Panoramic sunroof screen
To move it to your chosen position, press part Aor Bof the switch.
The lighting is activated on open- ing the tailgate or the rear screen. Notes: the tailgate and the rear
screen lock automatically while driv- ing (from 10 km/h) and unlock whenone of the doors is opened. When the rear windscreen wiper is in a wiping position, the rear screencan only be opned at the end of thecycle. Close the rear screen using the windscreen wiper arm or by press-ing the centre of the glass.

BONNET STRUT Secure the strut to hold the bonnet open. Before closing the bonnet, replace the strut in its housing.
To close Lower the bonnet and release it at the end of its travel. Check that thebonnet is locked.
FILLING THE FUEL TANK The tank must be filled with fuel with the
engine switched off .
Insert the key then turn it to the left. Remove the cap.
A label indicates which type of fuel to use. If you fill your tank, do not continue
after the third cut-off of the pump
nozzle. This could result in vehiclemalfunctions. The capacity of the tank is
approximately 50 litres.OPENING THE BONNET Inside the vehicle: pull the handle
on the left-hand side, under the fascia. Outside the vehicle: lift the catch
and raise the bonnet.
Always remove the key from the ignition whenleaving the vehicle, evenfor a short time. If an obstacle is detected
when operating the roof, you must reverse the movement of the roof.
To do this, press the control con-cerned. When the driver operates the roof control, he must ensure that noone is preventing correct closingof the roof. The driver must ensure that pas-
sengers use the sunroof correctly. Be aware of children when operat- ing the roof.

REAR QUARTER LIGHTS (3 DOOR)
To partially open the rear windows,
tilt lever then push the window.
ELECTRIC WINDOWS
1. Driver's electric window switch
You have two options: Ð Manual operation:Press or pull switch 1gently. The
window stops as soon as the switch is released.
Ð Automatic operation: Press or pull switch 1firmly. One
touch completely opens or closes
the window.
Automatic closing only operateswhen the engine is running and only
on the driver's electric window. 2. Passenger's electric window
switch.
3. Rear left electric window switch.
4. Rear right electric window switch.
Temporary disarming of the rear windows (child safety) This switch enables the rear windows to be locked whatever theirposition.
A 1st press activates the control (the indicator light on the button comeson) and a 2nd press deactivates it(the indicator light on the buttongoes out).
Always remove the key from the ignition whenleaving the vehicle, evenfor a short time. If an obstacle is detected
when operating the electric win- dows, you must reverse the move-
ment of the window. To do this,press the control concerned. When the driver operates the pas- senger electric window controls,he must ensure that no one ispreventing correct closing of thewindows. The driver must ensure that pas- sengers use the electric windows
correctly. Be aware of children when operating the windows.

AUTOMATIC AUTOADAPTIVE GEARBOX Moving Off
To move off, move the selector lever to position

position P. Stopped or parked Always leave the lever in position Pwhen you get out of your vehicle.
If not, a buzzer will sound when you open the driver's door. Positions of the selector lever These positions are displayed on the instrument panel. P. Park: use with the handbrake.
R. Reverse: this must only be engaged when the vehicle is stationary, engine at idle.
N. Neutral: if Nis engaged by mistake while the car is moving, allow the
engine to return to idle before engaging a new forward gear.
D. Drive: in this position, the four gears change automatically. The gearchange points vary depending on the programme selected.
3. Automatic changing of the first three gears only. Select this position when you notice frequent changes between third and fourth gear (town driving or on winding roads).
2. Automatic changing of the first two gears only. This position is particularly suitable for mountain roads, when going uphill (to make the best use of the engine's power) or downhill (engine braking).

Operating programmes
You have a choice of three operating programmes:
Ð Autoadaptive (normal)
Ð Sport
Ð SnowOne press on button Aor Bwill
select Sport or Snow respectively. The selection is displayed on theinstrument panel. Pressing the but-ton a second time will return to theautoadaptive (normal) programme. Autoadaptive programme (normal)
Gear changes are carried out on the basis of various parameters, suchas:
Ð driving style,
Ð road characteristics,
Ð vehicle load.The gearbox selects the most suit- able programme from those in thememory for the current driving con-ditions. Sport programme The Sport programme automatically favours more dynamic driving. Snow Programme In position
D, the Snow programme
provides smooth driving suited to slippery roads in order to improve
traction and stability. Starting is in2nd gear and changing down is at
low engine speeds. Special operating features
Ð During prolonged braking, the gearbox changes down automati-
cally, so as to provide efficientengine braking.
Ð If you take your foot off the accel- erator suddenly (when you aretaken by surprise, for example),the gearbox will not change up, so
as to improve safety.
Ð When the engine is cold, the gear- box automatically selects a spe-cial programme that enables theengine to reach its ideal tempera-ture more quickly in order todecrease pollution.
Kickdown For immediate maximum accelera-
tion without touching the gear lever,press the accelerator pedal down as
far as it will go. The gearbox willchange down automatically or stayin the gear selected, up to maximumengine speed.
Any disruption of the sys- tem is signalled by thesimultaneous flashing ofthe Sport and Snow
lights on the instrument panel. Insuch a case, the gearbox will oper-
ate in downgrade mode. You mayfeel a substantial knock whenreverse is selected from Pto Ror
N to R(without any risk of damage
to the gearbox). Do not exceed 100km/h.Contact a PEUGEOT dealer with-
out delay. When the engine is idling with the
car in gear, the car will move evenwithout you accelerating. Do not accelerate while a gear is being selected, when the vehicle is
stationary.
When stationary, have your foot on the brake pedal when selecting a
gear. Do not accelerate in gear with the brakes on. If work needs to be done with the engine running, apply the hand-brake and select position P.
Do not change down to brake onslippery roads. Never select position Nwhen the
vehicle is moving.Never engage Por Runless the
vehicle is stationary.Do not leave children inside the vehicle unsupervised when theengine is running.

TRACTION CONTROL (ASR)
AND DYNAMIC STABILITY
CONTROL (ESP) These systems are linked and com-
plement the ABS.
The ASR system optimises drive to prevent the wheels skidding, byacting on the brakes of the drivewheels and on the engine. It alsoallows the directional stability of thevehicle to be improved on accelera-tion. If there is a variation betweenthe trajectory followed by the vehicle
and that required by the driver, the
ESP system automatically acts onthe engine and the brake of one ormore wheels, in order to put thevehicle back on course.Disarming the ASR/ESPsystems In exceptional conditions (starting a vehicle which is bogged down, stuck
in snow, on soft ground), it may be
advisable to disarm the ASR and
ESP systems, so that the wheels canmove freely and regain grip.
Press the "ESP OFF" switch,
located under the steering wheel to the left.
The switch lights up and thewarning light comes on: the
ASR and ESP systems no
longer have any effect onthe engine operation.
These are triggered again: automatically if the ignition is
switched off,
automatically above 50 km/h,
manually by pressing the switchagain.
Operation of the ASR and ESPsystems
When one of these two sys-tems is operating, this lightflashes.Operating checkWhen a malfunction of the systems occurs, the switchlight flashes and the warninglight comes on, accompaniedby an audible signal and the
message "ESP/ASR system not ope-
rational" on the multifunction display.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer to havethe system checked.
The ESP system offers exceptional safety in nor-mal driving, but thisshould not encourage the
driver to take extra risks or drive athigh speed. The correct functioning of this sys- tem depends on observation of themanufacturer's recommendationsregarding wheels (tyres and rims),the braking components and theelectronic components, as well asthe PEUGEOT assembly and ope-ration procedures. After an impact, have the system
checked by a PEUGEOT dealer.
