Moving Off
With the engine running, to move off from position P:
It is essential to press the brakepedal to exit position P (shift
lock),
Select the required position ( R, D ,
3 , 2 or 1) then gradually release
the brake pedal: the vehicle
moves off immediately.
You can also move off from position N:
Release the handbrake with yourfoot on the brake pedal,
Select the required position ( R, D ,
3 , 2 or 1) then gradually release
the brake pedal: the vehicle
moves off immediately. Automatic Operation Automatic changing of the
four
gears :
Move the selector lever to position D.
The gearbox continuously selects the most suitable gear according tothe following parameters:
Ð driving style,
Ð road characteristics,
Ð vehicle load. The gearbox functions in autoadap-
tive mode without any action on
your part. When the engine is idling
with position
R, D, 3, 2or
1 selected and the brakes
off, the car will move even
without you accelerating. For this reason, do not leave
children unsupervised inside the vehicle when the engine isrunning. If work needs to be done with the engine running, apply the hand-brake and select position P
.
Never select position Nwhen the
vehicle is moving. Never select position Por R
unless the vehicle is stationary .
Do not change from one position to another to optimise braking onslippery roads. In the event of battery failure, if the lever is in position Pit will not
be possible to change to anotherposition.

DRIVING YOUR 406 COUPE
Note: For immediate maximum acceleration
without touching the gear lever, pressthe accelerator pedal down as far as it
will go (kickdown). The gearbox willchange down automatically or stay inthe gear selected, up to maximumengine speed. When braking, the gearbox changes
down automatically to provide effi-cient engine braking.
If you take your foot off the accelera-
tor suddenly, the gearbox will not
change up for reasons of safety.

Disarming the ESP/ASR systems In certain exceptional conditions
(vehicle stuck in mud or snow, or onloose ground...), it could prove useful
to disarm the ASR and ESP systemsto make the wheels spin and regaingrip.
Press the switch "ESP OFF", sit-
uated to the left of the steering wheel.
The switch lights up and the indicatorlights come on, accompanied by themessage '' ASR/ESP de-activated''
on the multi-function display: the
ESP and ASR systems no longer
affect the operation of the engine orthe brakes. They engage again: automatically when the ignition is
switched off,
manually by pressing the switchagain. The ASR/ESP systemsoffer increased safety dur-ing normal driving, butshould not incite the driver
to take risks or to drive at highspeed. The operation of these systems is assured on condition that therecommendations of the manufac-turer regarding the wheels (tyresand wheel rims), the braking com-ponents, the electronic compo-nents and the assembly andrepair procedures within thePEUGEOT network are respected. After an accident or impact, have the system checked by a
PEUGEOT dealer.
Operating check When a system malfunctionoccurs, the switch lightflashes and the indicatorlight comes on.
Contact a PEUGEOT dealer tocheck the system.
TRACTION CONTROL (ASR)
AND DYNAMIC STABILITY
CONTROL (ESP) These systems are linked and com-
plement the ABS.
The ASR system optimises drive to prevent the wheels skidding, by act-ing on the brakes of the drive wheelsand on the engine. It also allows thedirectional stability of the vehicle tobe improved on acceleration. If there is a variation between the tra- jectory followed by the vehicle and
that required by the driver, the ESPsystem automatically acts on theengine and the brake of one or morewheels, in order to put the vehicleback on course.
Operation of the ASR and ESP systems
The warning light flashes if
the ASR or ESP is activated.
