effectivenessinrestrainingyou.
Thesameappliestobelttensionersystems
whichhavebeentriggered.
Inaddition,theanchorpointsofthebelts
shouldbechecked.

authorizedPorschedealerimmediately.
t>Ifthebeltsshowdamagetowebbing,bind-
ings,bucklesorretractors,theyshouldbere-

Anaudio-visualwarningsystemisintercon-
nectedwiththedriver'ssafetybelt.
Everytimetheignitionisturnedon,thegong
willsoundforabout6secondstoreminddriver
andpassengertobuckleup.
Thesafetybeltwarninglightsintheinstrument
panelandon-boardcomputerwillgooffassoon
asthedriverhasbuckled
up.
Inertiareelretractor
The
combinationlap/shoulderbeltwithinertia
reellockingmechanismadjustsautomaticallyto
yoursizeandmovementsaslongasthepullon
thebeltisslow.
Rapiddecelerationduringhardbrakingoracolli-
sionlocksthebelt.Thebeltwillalsolockwhen
youdriveupordownasteephillorinasharp
curve,otherwise,theshoulderbeltwillnotinhibit
yourupperbodymovement.
t>Assumeacomfortablesittingposition.
Theshoulderbeltshouldalwaysrestonyour
upperbody.Theshoulderbeltshouldnever
bewornbehindyourbackorunderyourarm.
t>Tofasten,graspbeltandpullthebeltina
continuousslowmotionacrossyourchest
andlap.
t>Insertbelttongueintobuckleoninboardside
ofseat.Pushdownuntilitsecurelylockswith
anaudibleclick.Pullthebelttocheck.
t>Pullshouldersectiontomakesurebeltfits
snuglyacrossthepelvis.
t>Beltsshouldfitsnuglyacrossthepelvisand
chest.Makesurethereisnoslackinthebelt.
t>Tounfastenbelt,pushinreleasebutton
(arrow)onbuckle.Belttonguewillspringout
ofbuckle.
t>Toreleasealatchedbelt,leanbacktotake
thebodypressureoffthebelt.
t>Tostorelap/shoulderbelt,allowthebeltto
retractasyouguidethelatchtoitsstowed

Thesafetybeltsforthepassengerandrear
seatsareequippedwithanautomaticlockingre-
tractorforsecuringthechildrestraintsystem.
Whenactivated,thisretractorallowsyoutose-
curelyfastenthechildrestraintsysteminplace
sothatinadvertentmovementswillnotoccur.
Activatingtheautomaticlockingretractor
1.Pullthesafetybeltretractorcompletelyout.
Atthispointthelockingmechanismisacti-
vated.
2.Insertthesafetybelttongueintothebuckle
andmakecertainthatitisproperlylatched.
3.Allowthesafetybelttoretractuntilitistight
onthechildrestraintsystem.Youmayfur-
thertightenthebeltbypullingonittoallow
moreofittoretract.
Releasingthesafetybelt
1.Unbucklethesafetybeltlatch.
2.Thenmakecertainthatthebelthasfullyre-
tracted.
Atthispointtheautomaticlockingfeaturewill
bedisengaged.

ChildRestraintAnchorages
Pleasenotechapter"Automaticlockingretrac-
tor".
Ifyourchildrestraintseatorseatsrequirethe
useofatetherstrap,youwillwanttousethe
anchorpointsprovidedbehindtherearseat
backrestsunderthecarpet.
Toensureproperinstallation,seeyourauth-
orizedPorschedealer.
Thetetherstrapcanbemovedtotheotheran-
chorpointifrequired.

RolloverProtectionSystem
TheRolloverProtectionSystemonthe
Cabrioletconsistsoftwosupplementalsafety
barsthattogetherwiththefrontwindshield
framehelptocreateoccupantsurvivalspacein
caseofrollover.Becauseoftheextremeand
unpredictableforceswhichcanbeencountered
inarollover,itisnotpossibletoguaranteethat
occupantswillbeprotectedfromallcontactwith
exteriorobjectsortheground.However,the
RolloverProtectionSystemisdesignedtomain-
taintheoccupantsurvivalspace.
TheRolloverProtectionSystemisactivated
automaticallyintheeventofanaccidentorex-
tremedrivingsituation.
Theprotectivedevicesarelocatedbehindeach
rearseatandrapidlydeploywithinafractionof
asecond.
Theycandeployunder:
-Extremetiltingofthevehicle.
-Lossofgroundcontact(e.g.Goingoverthe
crestofahillathighspeed).

faulthasbeendetectedinthesystem.Theoper-

noswervingcaused

Shorterstopping
distance,
stoppingdistances
areusuallyreducedbecausecontrolledbraking
ismaximized.
Preventionofwheellockup,nobrake-
inducedslidingandthusnolocalizedtirewear
fromemergencybraking.
ThecrucialadvantageoftheABSsystemovera
conventionalbrakesystemisintheareaof
maintainingdirectionalcontrolandmaneuvera-
bilityofthecarinemergencysituationsduring
normaldriving,includingpanicbrakinginturns.

OperationoftheABSsystem
Awheelspeedsensorismountedtoeachofthe
fourwheels.Ifwheellock-upofeitherofthe
frontwheelsortherearwheelsissensedduring
braking,thebrakepressureisadjustedautomat-
icallyuntilthewheelnolongerslips.Thebrake
pressureisregulatedforeachfrontwheelindi-
viduallyandforbothoftherearwheels
together.
Onaroadsurfacewhichisslipperyononlyone
side,therearwheelwhichisbrakingontheslip-
perysurfacedeterminesthebrakepressure
whichwillbeappliedequallytobothrearwheels.
Thisensuresthatdirectionalstabilityismain-
tained.However,ifbrakingforcesapproachthe
wheellock-uppointforallwheels(panicbraking)
theABSsystemwillintervenetoprovidearapid
rythmicbraking.
TheproperoperationofABSisperceivedbythe
driverasapulsatingbrakepedalinconjunction
withaudiblenoiseandperhapssomevibration.
I>Ifyouexperiencethesesensationswhiledriv-
ingoraroadsurfacewithquestionabletrac-
tion,reducevehiclespeedappropriateforthe
prevailingroadconditions.
Thefunctionalreadinessofallthemainelectrical
componentsoftheABSischeckedbyanelec-
tronicmonitoringsystembothbeforeandwhile
youdrive.

WhentheignitionisswitchedontheABSwarn-
inglightwilllightupwhilethesystemiselec-
tronicallyinterrogatedandgoesoutwhenthe
engineisstartedifthecheckisnotyetcom-
plete.
IftheABSwarninglampfailstogoout,thisindi-
catesthatABShasbeendeactivatedduetoa
fault.Ifthewarninglightsintheinstrumentpanel
andon-boardcomputerlightupwhileyouare
driving,thisindicatesthatafaulthasoccurred.
Inbothcases,normalbraking,asinvehicles
withoutABS,isstillretained.
TheABSsystemshould,however,beexamined
atanauthorizedPorschedealerimmediatelyto
preventtheoccurrenceoffurtherfaults.

yourvehicletoyourauthorizedPorsche
dealerimmediately.
