Acorrectsittingpositionisimportantforsafe
andfatigue-freedriving.
Werecommendthefollowingprocedurefor
adjustingthedriver'sseattosuitindividual
requirements:
1.Adjusttheseatheighttogiveyourself
enoughheadroomandagoodoverviewof
thevehicle.
2.Adjusttheseatuntil,withtheaccelerator
pedalfullydepressed,yourlegisstraightbut
yourentirefootstillrestsontheaccelerator
pedal.
3.Gripthetophalfofthesteeringwheel.
Setthebackrestangleandsteering-wheel
positionsothatyourarmsarealmost
outstretched.However,yourshouldersmust
stillrestonthebackrest.
4.Ifnecessary,correcttheseatfore-and-aft
adjustment.

Airbag
Systems
TheAirbagsincombinationwiththesafetybelts
makesupasafetysystemwhichoffersthe
driverandthepassengerthegreatestknown
protectionfrominjuriesincaseofaccident.
Evenifyourvehicleisequippedwithairbags,
thesafetybeltsmustbewornatalltimes,
becausethefrontairbagsystemisonlyactu-
atedbyfrontalcollisionswithanimpactofsuffi-
cientseverity.
Seeshownfigureforrangesofeffectiveness.

Belowtheactuationthresholdoftheairbagsys-
tem,andduringtypesofcollisionswhichdonot
causetheactuationofthesystem,thesafety
beltsprovidetheprimaryprotectiontotheoccu-
pantswhencorrectlyworn.
Therefore,allpersonswithin
thevehicle
mustalwayswearsafety
belts(inmany
states,statelawrequirestheuseofsafety
belts).Seealsothechapter"SafetyBelts".
Thefrontairbagsarelocatedbehindthepadded
steeringwheelpanelonthedriver'ssideandon
thepassenger'ssideinthedashboard.
Thesideairbags(POSIP-PorscheSideImpact
ProtectionSystem)areinstalledinthedoors
underthedoortrimpanel.
Function
Thefrontairbagsaretriggeredduringafrontal
collisionofsufficientforce.
Intheeventofasideimpactofcorresponding
force,thesideairbagontheimpactsideistrig-
gered.
Theinflationprocessgeneratestheamountof
gasrequiredtofilltheairbagsatthenecessary
pressureinfractionsofasecond.
Airbagsprotectthefaceandupperbody,whilst
simultaneouslydampingthemotionofthedriver
andpassengerintheimpactdirectioninthe
eventofafrontalimpactorsideimpact.

airbagsmustinflateatveryhighspeed.
Ifyouarenotwearingyoursafetybeltor
aretooclosetotheairbagwhenitsde-

Inordertoensurelong-termfunctioning,theair-
bagsystemmustbeinspectedbyanauthorized
Porschedealerafter4,8and10yearsfromthe
dateofmanufactureshownonthesafetycom-
pliancesticker,andevery2yearsthereafter.
Importantinformation
IfyousellyourPorsche,notifythepurchaser
thatthevehicleisequippedwithairbags,and
referthemtothechapter,"AirbagSystems",in
theowner'smanual(safetyanddisposalrules).
Furtherinformationontheairbagsystemcanbe

totheenhancementofactivesafetyinyourve-
hicle.
Thissystempreventsthewheelsfrom
lockinginapanicstoponalmostallroadsur-
faces.

brakingforceswhenABSisengaged.
Good
directionalcontrol,
noswervingcaused

Shorterstopping
distance,
stoppingdistances
areusuallyreducedbecausecontrolledbraking
ismaximized.
Preventionofwheellockup,nobrake-
inducedslidingandthusnolocalizedtirewear
fromemergencybraking.
ThecrucialadvantageoftheABSsystemovera
conventionalbrakesystemisintheareaof
maintainingdirectionalcontrolandmaneuvera-
bilityofthecarinemergencysituationsduring
normaldriving,includingpanicbrakinginturns.

ThePSMusesthesevaluestodeterminethe
directionoftraveldesiredbythedriver.
PSMintervenesandcorrectsthecourseifthe
vehicle'sactualdirectiondeviatesfromthe
desiredcourse(steering-wheelposition).It
brakesindividualwheelsasneeded.Ifnecess-
ary,thePSMadditionallyinfluencestheengine
powerorthegear-changingcharacteristicofthe
Tiptronicinordertostabilizethevehicle.
TheeventsbelowinformthedriverofPSMcon-
troloperationsandwarnhimtoadapthisdriving
styletotheroadconditions:
-Theinformationlightintheinstrumentpanel
lightsup.
-Hydraulicnoisescanbeheard.
-Thevehicledeceleratesandsteering-wheel
forcesarealteredasthePSMcontrolsthe
brakes.
-Reducedenginepower.
-Thebrakepedalpulsatesanditspositionis
changedduringbraking.
However,itispossibleatanytimetoachieve
fullvehicledecelerationbyincreasingthefoot
pressureslightlyonthebrakepedal.
