Octane ratings

The CLC orAKI octane ratingisusually lowerthan
the RON rating:
For example: 95RON equals 90CLC orAKI
Unleaded
fuelsmaynotbeavailable outsidethe
continental U.S.andCanada. Therefore, werec-
ommend youdonot take your cartoareas or
countries whereunleaded fuelmay notbeavail-
able.
Octane ratingindicates afuel's ability toresist det-
onation. Therefore, buyingthecorrect octanegas
is important toprevent engine"damage".
The RON octane ratingisbased onthe research
method. TheCLC (U.S. CostofLiving Council oc-
tane rating) orAKI (antiknock index)octane rating
usually displayed onU.S. fuelpumps iscalculated
as research octanenumber plusmotor octane
number, dividedby2,that iswritten as:
Fuels
containing MMT

Some NorthAmerican fuelscontain anoctane en-
hancing additive calledmethylcyclopentadienyl
manganese tricarbonyl(MMT).

If
such fuels areused, youremission controlsys-
tem performance maybenegatively affected.
The check engine warning lightonyour instrument
panel mayturnon.

If
this occurs, Porsche recommends youstop us-
ing fuels containing MMT.
Portable FuelContainers

Fuels
containing alcoholandether

Some areasofthe U.S. require oxygenated fuels
during certain portions ofthe year. Oxygenated fu-
els are fuels which contain alcohols (suchasmeth-
anol orethanol) orether (such asMTBE).
Under normal conditions, theamount ofthese
compounds inthe fuel willnot affect driveability.
You may useoxygenated fuelsinyour Porsche,
provided theoctane requirements foryour vehicle
are met. Werecommend, however,tochange to
a different fuelorstation
if
any ofthe following
problems occurwithyour vehicle:
- Deterioration ofdriveability andperformance.
- Substantially reducedfueleconomy.
- Vapor lockandnon-start problems, especially
at high altitude orathigh temperature.
- Engine malfunction orstalling.

FuelEvaporation Control

Fuel tank venting
The evaporation chamberandthecarbon canister
prevent fuelfrom escaping tothe atmosphere at
extreme highoutside temperatures, whendriving
abruptly aroundcurvesandwhen thecar isparked
at an incline orinany other nonlevel position.
Vapor control systemandstorage
When thefuel tank isfilled, vapors arecollected in
the evaporation chamberbyavent lineleading the
vapors tothe carbon canister wheretheyare
stored aslong asthe engine doesnotrun.
Purge system
When theengine isrunning, thefuel vapors from
the canister willbemixed withfresh airfrom the
ambient airofthe canister. Thismixture willbe
directed tothe intake airhousing bythe tank vent
line, mixed withtheintake airand burned during
normal combustion.

Washer
Fluid

The reservoir, withablue screw cap,isinthe lug-
gage compartment, tothe rear left.
Capacity
- Without headlight cleaningsystem:
approximately 3.2quarts (3liters).
- With headlight cleaningsystem:
approximately 6.1quarts (5.7liters). Clean
water isgenerally notenough toclean the
windshield andheadlights.
It is advantageous toadd awinter cleaner giving
antifreeze protection orasuitable summer clean-
er, depending onthe season. Followtheinstruc-
tions forthe mixing ratio.

Donot use engine coolant anti-freeze orany
other solution thatcandamage thecar's paint,
in the washer reservoir.

Please noteallthe information onthe container
of the cleaning agent.

Warning light
The warning lightsinthe instrument panelandon-
board computer lightwhen approximately 0.5liter
(0.52 quarts) isleft inthe reservoir.

Washing

The best method ofprotecting yourcarfrom the
damaging effectsofthe environment isfrequent
washing andtheapplication ofapreservative. The
underside ofyour vehicle shouldalsobewashed
thoroughly, atthe latest whensaltisno longer
spread onthe roads.
The longer salt,road dustandindustrial dust,
dead insects, birddroppings orsubstances from
trees (resin, pollen) areallowed toremain onthe
bodywork, themore serious istheir harmful ef-
fect.
New cars should bewashed carefully withplenty
of clear water toprotect thenew paint work. Dark
paint finishes showupthe smallest ofsurface
damage (e.g.,scratches) morereadily thanlighter
colors.
Dark colors arealso more susceptible toscratch-
ing because ofthe composition oftheir pigments
and require particularly carefulpaintcare.

Donot wash yourcarinbright sunlight orwhile
the bodywork isstill hot.

When washing byhand, useabundant water,a
soft sponge orwash brush, andPorsche car
shampoo.

Begin byspraying thebody thoroughly withwa-
ter torinse away loose dirt.

After washing, rinsethecarwith plenty ofwa-
ter and then drywith achamois leather.
Do not use thesame chamois leatherfordry-
ing asyou useforcleaning thewindshield and

Moisture whichgetsontothe brakes during
a car wash canreduce braking efficiency or
make thebrakes pullunevenly whichcould
increase thedanger ofan accident, causing
serious personal injuriesordeath.

dry the brake discs.

Automatic carwashes

Optional add-onpartsorparts which project
beyond thecontours ofthe vehicle maybe
damaged bydesign features (e.g.brushes) ofau-
tomatic carwashes.
The
following partsareparticularly
susceptible todamage:

- Windshield wipers(always switchthemoffto
prevent themwiping unintentionally inintermit-
tent operation)
- External telephone antennas(alwaysunscrew)
- Roof Transport System(alwaysremove com-
pletely)
- Rear spoiler
- Wheels (thewider therimand thelower thetire
height, thegreater therisk ofdamage)
- High-gloss wheels(toprevent thesefromget-
ting scratched, donot clean withthewheel-
cleaning brushesofthe carwash).

Note

Automatic carwashes spraywater atodd angles
and high pressures, whicharenotseen innormal
driving. Therefore, watercansometimes findits
way intothepassengers compartment duringor
shortly afterthecarwash.

Doorlocks

Toprevent thedoor locks fromfreezing during
the cold season, thelock cylinders shouldbe
covered duringawash.

Should thelocks freeze, useanordinary de-
icer. Inmany cases, awell warmed keycan
help. Never useexcessive force.

Paint

Never rubadusty carwith adry cloth since
dust particles areabrasive andcould dulland
damage thesurface finish.
The paintwork ofyour carisexposed toall types
of mechanical andchemical conditions, particular-
ly climatic onessuchasbright sunlight, rain,frost
and snow. Ultraviolet light,rapid changes intem-
perature, rain,snow, industrial dustandchemical
deposits constantly attackthepaint which isonly
able towithstand suchexposure inthe long term

Donot apply silicone polishes tothe windshield
or windows.

Donot treat matt-painted componentswith
preservatives orpolishes asthis willspoil the
matte effect.

The paint surface becomes dullover timedueto
weathering. Itis therefore necessary topreserve
the paint regularly.
This keeps thepaint shiny andelastic. Dirtispre-
vented fromadhering tothe paint surface andin-
dustrial dustisprevented frompenetrating the
paint.
Provided itis washed andtreated withpreserva-
tive regularly, thebrand newfinish ofyour carwill
be retained foryears tocome.

Apply thePorsche paintpreservative afterthe
car wash andpolish itdry toobtain abright fin-
ish orsimply addaliquid preservative regularly
to the final rinse water.
Polishing Do not resort tousing Porsche polishuntilitbe-
comes evident thatthenormal preservatives no
longer produce thedesired finish.
Spots andstains

Remove tarstains, grease, oilspots anddead
insects assoon aspossible withInsect Remov-
er. They cancause discoloration ifallowed to
remain onthe paintwork.

Wash theaffected areaimmediately aftertreat-
ing it. Minor
paintdamage

Have minor paintdamage, suchasscratches,
scores orchips caused byflying stones, re-
paired immediately byyour authorized
Porsche dealerbefore corrosion setsin.
However, ifthere arealready tracesofcorrosion,
they must firstberemoved carefullyandthorough-
ly. Coat thearea witharust-proofing primerand
finish offwith atop coat. Thepaint code andcolor
number arefound onthe vehicle's paintdataplate.

Engine compartment

The engine compartment andthesurface ofthe
engine aretreated withacorrosion-inhibitor atthe
factory.
If degreasing solventsareused toclean theen-
gine compartment orthe engine iswashed down,
the process almostinvariably removesthecorro-
sion-inhibiting coating.Itis then absolutely neces-
sary tohave adurable preservative appliedtoall
surfaces, bodyseams, jointsandassemblies in
the engine compartment. Thisalsoapplies when
corrosion-inhibitor partsarereplaced.

ternator, orcover thealternator.
Effective corrosion-proofing isparticularly impor-
tant during thecold weather season.Ifyour caris
driven frequently inareas where salthasbeen
spread onthe roads, thewhole engine compart-
ment should becleaned thoroughly afterthewin-
ter toprevent saltfrom causing anylasting dam-
age. Afull under-body washshould alsobeper-
formed atthe same time.
Windows

The road dustwhich settles onthe windshield and
windows containsparticles oftire rubber andoil
residue. Theinterior trimandupholstery release
particles, particularly instrong sunlight, whichcol-
lect onthe insides ofthe windows. Thesedeposits
are augmented byimpurities inthe airwhich en-
ters thecarthrough thefresh airvents.

Clean allwindows regularly, insideandoutside,
with Porsche windowcleaner.

c>
Ifyou useachamois leatherforthe windows,
do not use itfor paintwork asitwill otherwise
pick upacertain amount ofpreservative orpol-
ish and could smear tilewindows andthus im-
pair vision.

Remove deadinsects withthePorsche insect
remover.

Wiper blades

Wiper blades thatareinperfekt condition arevital
for aclear view.

Replace thewiper blades twiceperyear (be-
fore andafter thecold season) orwhenever
wiper performance deteriorates.

Periodically cleanthewiper blades with
Porsche windowcleaner, especially afterthe
vehicle hasbeen washed inacar wash.
If they arevery dirty (e.g. withinsect remains),
they canbecleaned withasponge orcloth.

Undercoating

As itis not possible toexclude therisk ofdamage
to this protective coatinginday today driving, it
is advisable tohave theunderside ofthe car in-
spected atcertain intervals -preferably beforethe
start ofwinter andagain inspring -and theunder-
coating restored asnecessary.
Your authorized Porschedealerisfamiliar withthe
bodyseal treatment procedures andhasthenec-
essary equipment forapplying factoryapproved
materials. Werecommend thatyouentrust them
with such work andinspections.
Unlike conventional sprayoils,undercoating and
rust-proofing compoundsbasedonbitumen or
wax donot attack thesound-proofing materialsap-
plied atthe factory.

proofing onornear theexhaust manifold, ex-
haust pipes, catalytic converters orheat
shields. Duringdriving thesubstance usedfor
undercoating couldoverheat andignite.

Before applying freshunderseal, carefullyre-
move deposits ordirt and grease. Onceithas
dried, thenew undercoating compoundforms
a tough protective coatingwhichprovides effi-
cient rust-proofing ofthe floor panels andcom-
ponents.

Always applyafresh coating ofsuitable preser-
vative tounprotected areasaftercleaning the
underside ofthe body, thetransmission, the
engine orcarrying outrepairs tounder-body,
engine ortransmission components.
Effective rust-proofing isparticularly important
during thecold weather season.
If
your carisdriv-
en frequently inareas where salthas been spread
on the roads, thewhole engine compartment
should becleaned thoroughly afterthewinter to
prevent saltfrom causing anylasting damage. A
full under-body washshould alsobeperformed at
the same time.

roof,lidand window seals

Wash dirt(e.g. abrasion, dust,roadsalts) from
all seals regularly usingwarm soapy water. Do
not use anychemical cleaningagentsorsol-
vents.
When thereisafrost hazard, theouter doorseals
and thefront andrear lidseals canbeprotected
against freezing intoplace byasuitable careprod-
uct.

In order toprevent damage tothe anti-
friction coating, theinner doorseals must
not betreated withcare products.
Headlights,

light lenses, plasticpartsandsurfaces.
Do not clean whendry.
Use asoft sponge orasoft, lint-free cloth.Gen-

The Porsche insidewindow cleanerisalso suit-
able forcleaning plasticsurfaces. Followthe
cleaning instructions onthe container.
Never useother chemical cleanersor

where saltisspread onwinter roadsorthere
is alot ofairborne industrial dust,itis best to
clean thewheels weekly.

The Porsche LightAlloyWheel Cleaner
(ph-value 9.5)canbeused forthis pur-
pose.
If the ph-value ofthe detergent isincor-
rect, theprotective coatingonthe wheels

will
bedestroyed.
Polishes whichdissolve oxides,suchasthose
frequently usedforother metals, orabrasive
tools oragents areunsuitable becausethey
break downtheoxide filmofthe protective
coating andwillcause discoloration ofthe
wheel.

Every threemonths, aftercleaning, coatthe
wheels withacar wax ornon-<:orrosive grease
(vaseline).
Using aclean cloththoroughly rubthe grease
into thesurface.
Leather

Characteristics andspecial features

The natural surface markings ofleather, e.g.
creases, healedscars,insectstingmarks, struc-
tural differences andslight variations inshade and
grain addtothe attractiveness ofthe natural leath-
er product.
A special mention mustbemade hereofnatural
leather.
For natural leather, carefully selected hidesofthe
highest qualityareused. Itis not covered com-
pletely withdyeonproduction.
"Nature's signature" istherefore easilyrecognis-
able.
This finematerial isdistinguished byanoutstand-
ing seating comfort, specialsuppleness andatyp-
ical patina.
Leather
careandtreatment

Clean theengine compartment.
The under carriage andchassis components
should befree ofdirt and saltdeposits.
r> Fillupthe fuel tank.
r> Change theoiland oilfilter, andrunthe engine
for several minutes.

Increase thetire pressure to58 psi (4bar).
It is not recommended tolift the vehicle, dueto
the possibility ofcorrosion onshock absorber
piston shafts.
The vehicle shouldbemoved slightly, approxi-
mately everyfourweeks, toprevent flatspot
on the tires.

Climate control

The airconditioning systemshouldbeingood
working condition andfully charged.

WindshieldjHeadlight washer

r> Check andcorrect antifreeze/cleaning solu-
tion level asnecessary.

Electrical system

r> Remove thebattery fromthevehicle andstore
it in acool dryplace, notonacement floor.

When thebattery isdisconnected, the
alarm system isdeactivated.

r> Recharge thebattery every3months. Ifthe
battery remains inthe vehicle withthecables
connected, itis necessary tocheck, remove
and recharge thebattery every2-3weeks.

Do not fast charge thebattery.

Vehicle
interior

The interior mustbedry, especially inthe area of
the floor carpets. Theuseofdrying agents (Silica-
Gel) isrecommended invehicles withleather inte-
rior and inareas withhighhumidity. Therecom-
mended amountis3fabric bagsof1.1 Ibs.
(500 grams) eachplaced onthe floor carpets.
Windows, doorsandlidsmust beclosed. Theair
flaps should beopened.
