The SPORT mode indicator \fight i\f\fuminates when the
SPORT mode is turned “ON”. (See “Driving with
Continuous\fy Variab\fe Transmission (CVT)” (P.5-14)
\bor the use o\b the SPORT mode switch.)
Stop/Start System indicator \fight (i\b
equipped \bor Europe)/Id\fing Stop System
indicator \fight (i\b equipped \bor Thai\fand)
Stop/Start System indicator light (if equipped
for Europe):
The Stop/Start System indicator \fight i\f\fuminates in the
meter when the Stop/Start System is activated.
The Stop/Start System indicator \fight b\finks at a high
speed, when the engine hood is open (\bor CVT mode\f) .
The Stop/Start System indicator \fight b\finks at a \fow
speed, when the Stop/Start System is ma\f\bunctioning.
NOTE:
. When the Stop/Start System indicator light
blinks at a high speed (twice approximately
every one second) (for CVT model):
—Be sure to close the engine hood. When
the engine hood is open the engine will
be in the normal stopped state. In this
case, restart the engine with the ignition
switch.
. When the Stop/Start System indicator light
blinks at a low speed (once approximately
every one second) , have the system
checked, and if necessary repaired, by a
RENAULT dealer promptly. Idling Stop System indicator light (if equipped
for Thailand):
The Id\fing Stop System indicator \fight i\f\fuminates in the
meter when the Id\fing Stop System is activated.
The Id\fing Stop System indicator \fight b\finks at a high
speed, when the driver’s door or the engine hood is
open.
The Id\fing Stop System indicator \fight b\finks at a \fow
speed, when the Id\fing Stop System is ma\f\bunctioning.
NOTE:
.
When the Idling Stop System indicator light
blinks at a high speed (twice approximately
every one second):
—Be sure to close the driver’s door.
— Be sure to close the engine hood. When
the engine hood is opened the engine
will be in the normal stopped state. In this
case, restart the engine with the ignition
switch.
. When the Idling Stop System indicator light
blinks at a low speed (once approximately
every two seconds) , have the system
checked, and if necessary repaired, by a
RENAULT dealer promptly.
Turn signa\fs/hazard indicator \fights
The turn signa\fs/hazard indicator \fights b\fink when the
turn signa\f switch \fever or hazard indicator \b\fasher
switch is “ON”. (See “Head\fight and turn signa\f switch”
(P.2-29) or “Hazard indicator \b\fasher switch” (P.2-36) .)
Vehic\fe Dynamic Contro\f (VDC) o\b\b
indicator \fight (i\b equipped)
Vehic\fe Dynamic Contro\f (VDC) o\b\b indicator \fight
i\f\fuminates when the VDC o\b\b switch is pushed to the
“OFF” position.
When the VDC o\b\b switch is pushed to the “OFF”
position, the VDC system is turned o\b\b.
I\b the VDC o\b\b indicator \fight and s\fip indicator \fight
i\f\fuminate whi\fe the engine is running or whi\fe driving, it
may indicate the VDC system is not \bunctioning
proper\fy and may need servicing. Have the system
checked, and i\b necessary repaired, by a RENAULT
dea\fer prompt\fy. (See “Vehic\fe Dynamic Contro\f (VDC)
system (i\b equipped except \bor Europe)” (P.5-24) .)
AUDIBLE REMINDERS
Brake pad wear warning
The disc brake pads have audib\fe wear warnings.
When a brake pad requires rep\facement, it wi\f\f make a
high pitched scraping sound when the vehic\fe is in
motion. This scraping sound wi\f\f \birst occur on\fy when
the brake peda\f is depressed. A\bter more wear o\b the
brake pad, the sound wi\f\f a\fways be heard even i\b the
brake peda\f is not depressed. Have the brakes
checked as soon as possib\fe i\b the wear warning
sound is heard.
Have the system checked, and i\b necessary repaired,
by a RENAULT dea\fer prompt\fy. (See “Brakes” (P.8-
17) .)

5-16Starting and driving
P (Park):
Use this position when the vehicle is par\fed or when
starting the engine.Make sure that the vehicle is
completely stopped and move the selector lever
into the \bP”(Park) position. Apply the par\fing
bra\fe. When par\fing on a hill, first depress the foot
bra\fe pedal, apply the par\fing bra\fe, and then move
the selector lever into the \bP” (Par\f) position.
R (Reverse):
Use this position to bac\f up. Ma\fe sure that the vehicle
is completely stopped before selecting the \bR”
(Reverse) position.
N (Neutral):
Neither the forward nor reverse gear is engaged. The
engine can be started in this position. You may shift to
the \bN” (Neutral) position and restart a stalled engine
while the vehicle is moving.
D (Drive):
Use this position for all normal forward driving.
L (Low):
Use this position when climbing steep hills slowly or
driving slowly through deep snow, sand or mud, or for
maximum engine bra\fing on steep downhill grades.SPORT mode switch

switch with the selector lever in the \bD” (Drive)
position. The SPORT mode indicator light
in the
meter panel illuminates. To turn off the SPORT mode,
push the SPORT mode switch again. The SPORT
mode indicator light will turn off. When the selector
lever is shifted to any position other than \bD”, the
SPORT mode will be automatically turned off.
“OFF” position:
For normal driving and fuel economy, use the \bOFF”
position.
“ON” position:
For driving up or down long slopes where engine
bra\fing is necessary, or for powerful acceleration, use
the \bON” position. The transmission will automatically
select a different gear ratio, allowing the engine to
provide high output.
When driving conditions change, push the switch to
turn the SPORT mode off.
Remember not to drive at high speeds for extended
periods of time with the SPORT mode in the \bON”
position. This reduces fuel economy.
Accelerator downshift - in the \bD” position -
For passing or climbing hills, depress the accelerator
pedal to the floor. This shifts the transmission down
into a lower gear, depending on the vehicle speed.
Shift loc\f release
JVC0028XRight-Hand Drive (RHD) modelIf the battery charge is low or discharged, the selector
lever may not be moved from the \bP” (Par\f) position
even with the bra\fe pedal depressed and the selector
lever button pushed.
To move the selector lever, perform the following
procedure:
1. Model with Intelligent Key system:
Place the ignition switch in the \bOFF” or \bLOCK”
position.
Model without Intelligent Key system:
Place the ignition switch in the \bLOCK” position,
and remove the \fey if it is inserted.
2. Apply the par\fing bra\fe.
3. Depress the shift loc\f release button.
4. Push the selector lever button and move the selector lever to the \bN” (Neutral) position while
holding down the shift loc\f release.

Manual Transmission (MT) model\f
1. Place \bhe igni\bion swi\bch in \bhe “OFF” posi\bion.
2. Secure \bhe s\beering wheel in a s\braigh\b-aheadposi\bion wi\bh rope or a similar device.
3. Move \bhe shif\b lever \bo \bhe “N” (Neu\bral) posi\bion.
4. Release \bhe parking brake.
5. A\b\bach safe\by chains whenever \bowing.
Rear wheels on the ground:
1. Place \bhe igni\bion swi\bch \bo \bhe “OFF” posi\bion.
2. Secure \bhe s\beering wheel in a s\braigh\b-ahead posi\bion wi\bh rope or a similar device.
3. Move \bhe shif\b lever \bo \bhe “N” (Neu\bral) posi\bion.
4. Release \bhe parking brake.
5. A\b\bach safe\by chains whenever \bowing.
All four wheels on the ground:
CAUTION:
Never tow AT/CVT model with all four wheels on
the ground. Doing so will cause serious and
expensive damage to the transmission.
Manual Transmission (MT) model\f
1. Place \bhe igni\bion swi\bch in \bhe “OFF” posi\bion.
2. Move \bhe shif\b lever \bo \bhe “N” (Neu\bral) posi\bion.
3. Release \bhe parking brake.
Freeing \brapped vehicle
WARNING:
. Never allow anyone to stand near the towing
line during the pulling operation.
. Never spin the tires at high speed. This could
cause them to explode and result in serious
injury. Parts of the vehicle could also over-
heat and be damaged.
. Do not pull the vehicle using the rear hook.
The rear hook is not designed to pull the
vehicle out in the event that the vehicle
becomes trapped.
In \bhe even\b \bha\b your vehicle’s \bires become \brapped in
sand, snow, or mud, and \bhe vehicle is unable \bo free
i\bself wi\bhou\b being pulled, use \bhe recovery hooks.
. Use \bhe recovery hooks only. Do no\b a\b\bach \bhe
pulling device \bo any o\bher par\b of \bhe vehicle body.
O\bherwise, \bhe vehicle body may be damaged.
. Use \bhe recovery hooks \bo free a vehicle only.
Never \bow a vehicle using only \bhe recovery hooks.
. The recovery hooks are under \bremendous s\bress
when used \bo free a \brapped vehicle. Always pull
\bhe pulling device s\braigh\b ou\b from \bhe vehicle.
