The sensor is a component of the ACC » page 214 and Front Assist
» page 219 systems.
The sensor function may be impaired in the events of one of the following. ▶ The sensor cover is soiled (e.g. with mud, snow etc.).
▶ The area in front of and around the sensor cover is obscured (e.g. by labels,
auxiliary headlights etc.).
▶ When visibility is poor, (e.g. fog, heavy rain, thick snowfall).
If the sensor is covered or dirty, the corresponding message appears in the in-
strument cluster display for the ACC system » page 218, Malfunctions or Front
Assist system » page 221, Malfunctions .WARNING■
If you suspect that the sensor is damaged, deactivate the ACC system and
Front Assist system » page 216» page 220 . Have the sensor checked by a
specialist garage.■
A collision or damage in the front or lower area of the vehicle could affect
the sensor function - there is risk of accident! Have the sensor checked by
a specialist garage.
■
Do not cover the area in front of and around the sensor cover. This can
lead to impaired function of the sensor - risk of accidents!
CAUTION
Remove the snow with a brush and the ice with a solvent-free de-icer.

Stability Control (ESC)
Read and observe

ESC improves vehicle stability in critical driving situations (e.g. if the vehicle
starts to skid) by the braking the individual wheels to maintain the direction.
If there is a TCS intervention, the indicator light  flashes in the instrument
cluster.
ESC Sport
Read and observe
on page 200 first.
ESC Sport allows for a sportier driving style. With ESC Sport activated, no ESC
intervention takes place when the vehicle slightly oversteers and understeers,
and ASR is so limited that the drive wheels can be spun.

Use a plastic ice scraper for removing snow and ice from the windows and mir-
rors. This can be on the inside of the fuel filler flap.

Open the fuel filler flap and slide the scraper in the direction of arrow

CAUTION
■
Move the scraper in one direction only, otherwise there is a risk of damage to
the glass surface.■
Do not remove snow / ice on the surface that is soiled (e.g. pea gravel, sand,
road salt) - there is a risk of damaging the surface.
■
Remove snow / ice carefully, otherwise there is a risk of damaging the labels
that have been fitted to the vehicle by the factory.

CAUTION■Never drive until the fuel tank is completely empty! Irregular supply of fuel
can cause misfiring, which can result in damage to parts of the engine and the
exhaust system.■
Immediately remove any fuel that has spilled onto the vehicle's paintwork –
risk of paint damage.
■
If you would like to operate your vehicle in a country other than the one for
which it was intended, please talk to a ŠKODA Partner. They will tell you
whether the fuel specified by the manufacturer is offered in that country
and/or whether the manufacturer will sanction operating the vehicle with an-
other fuel.

The fuel tank is full as soon as the pump nozzle switches off for the first time.

Remove the pump nozzle from the fuel filler tube and put it back in the
pump.

Place the filler cap onto the fuel filler neck and turn it in the opposite direc-
tion to arrow

until it securely engages.

Close the fuel filler flap until it clicks into place.
Incorrect refuelling guard on vehicles with diesel engines
The fuel filler tube on vehicles with diesel engines is fitted with an incorrect
refuelling guard » Fig. 287.
If the diesel pump nozzle does not sit directly in the fuel filler tube, move it to
and fro with slight pressure to insert it correctly.
The diameter of the diesel pump nozzle can be identical to that of the petrol
pump nozzle in some countries. When driving in these countries, the incorrect
fuelling protection should be removed by a specialist company.

CAUTIONThe following instructions must be observed, otherwise there is a risk of dam-
age to the engine and to the exhaust system.■
If a different fuel other than diesel fuel, which complies to the above men-
tioned standards (e.g. petrol) is used, do not start the engine or switch on the
ignition!
■
The biofuel RME must not be used!
CAUTION
Diesel fuel additives■The diesel fuel in accordance with the prescribed standards meets all the
conditions for a smooth running engine. Therefore, we recommend that you do
not add any fuel additives to the diesel - - there is a risk of engine damage or
damage to the exhaust system.

Natural gas filler tubes

Refuel with natural gas under the following conditions. The vehicle is unlocked.
The engine and the ignition are switched off.
The auxiliary heating and ventilation is switched off » page 109.
Natural gas refuelling may vary from station to station. If refuelling with natu-
ral gas at a station is unfamiliar to you, get someone to instruct you or allow
the fuelling operation to be carried out by the station staff.

place.
The natural gas refuelling systems have an overfill protection relating to the
outdoor temperature. At very high outside temperatures, it may happen that
the gas tank may not be fully refuelled.
If the vehicle is parked directly after a refuelling operation, on restart the
pointer of the gas gauge may not show exactly the same level as immediately
after the filling process. This is not a leak in the system, but a reduction in
pressure due to the cooling of the gas in the gas tank after refuelling.
The maximum lifetime of the gas tank is 20 years.
The capacity of the natural gas fuel tank is approximately 15 kg.
WARNING■
Natural gas is highly explosive and highly flammable.■When refuelling, never get into the vehicle. If you have to get into your
vehicle in exceptional cases, touch a metal surface before you touch the
filling coupling again. Otherwise, electrostatic discharging may occur -
There is a risk of fire!
Note
During the filling process sounds are heard which are harmless. If you are un-
sure which service station staff to use, ask the petrol station staff.251Inspecting and replenishing

Check and refill oil under the following conditions. The vehicle is on a horizontal surface.
The engine operating temperature is reached.
The engine is turned off.
Checking the level

Wait a few minutes until the engine oil flows back into the oil trough.

Pull the dipstick out and wipe with a clean cloth.
›
Push the dipstick back to the stop and then pull it out again.

Read the oil level and push the dipstick back in.

NoteAn engine oil level which is too low is shown in the instrument cluster by the

Nevertheless, we recommend checking the oil level on a regular basis using
the dipstick.
Coolant
 Introduction
This chapter contains information on the following subjects:
Checking and refilling

The coolant helps to keep the engine temperature down, and consists of wa-
ter and coolant additive (with additives that protect the cooling system against
corrosion and prevent furring).
The proportion of coolant additive in the coolant must be 40 to 60 %.
The correct mix of water and coolant additive should be checked and if neces-
sary corrected by a specialist garage.
WARNING■ The following instructions must be followed at all times when working on
the engine compartment » page 252.■
Never open the end cover of the coolant expansion reservoir while the
engine is still warm. The cooling system is pressurised - risk of scalding or
injury from splashes of coolant!
■
To protect against the coolant splashing, cover the cap with a cloth when
opening.
■
Coolant and coolant fumes are harmful - avoid contact with the coolant. If
the coolant comes into contact with the eye or skin, wash the affected area
with plenty of water for several minutes, and where appropriate seek medi-
cal help.
CAUTION
Do not cover the radiator and install any parts (e.g auxiliary lights.) in front of
the air intakes - There is a risk of the engine overheating.256General Maintenance

CAUTIONEnsure that battery acid does not come into contact with the bodywork –
There is a risk of damage to the vehicle.
Note
■ We recommend having all work on the vehicle battery carried out by a spe-
cialist garage.■
You should replace batteries older than 5 years.

The battery condition is checked regularly by a specialist garage as part of the
inspection service.
Check the acid level
For car batteries with acid level indicator, acidity can be checked on the basis
of a colour display. In vehicle batteries with the label “AGM” there is no acid
level examination.
Depending on the equipment, the vehicle battery may be provided with a cov-
er, this can be opened in the direction of arrow » Fig. 296 -
 .
Air bubbles can influence the colour of the indicator. For this reason carefully
tap on the indicator before carrying out the check » Fig. 296 -
 .
Black colour – electrolyte level is correct.
Colourless or light yellow colour – electrolyte level too low, the battery must be replaced.
Battery discharge
If frequent short journeys are made, the vehicle battery does not recharge suf- ficiently.
The battery capacity decreases at low temperatures.
If the vehicle is not used for longer than 3 to 4 weeks, then disconnect the
negative terminal 
of the battery or charge the battery constantly with a very
low charging current.

Only charge the battery when the ignition and all consumers are switched off.
Refer to the instructions of the charger manufacturer.

For vehicles with the START-STOP system or auxiliary heater
, connect the
-terminal of the charger on the battery’s -pole,

the charger terminals to the corresponding battery poles (  to

Plug the mains cable of the charger into the power socket and switch on the
device.

After charging has been successful: Switch off the charger and remove the
mains cable from the power socket.

Disconnect the terminals of the charger from the vehicle battery.
A charging current of 0.1 multiple of the total vehicle battery capacity (or low-
er) must be used until full charging is achieved.
WARNING■ When charging the vehicle battery, hydrogen is released - risk of explo-
sion. An explosion can be caused through sparking while unclamping or
loosening the cable plug.■
So-called “quick-charging” of the vehicle battery is dangerous and re-
quires a special charger and specialist knowledge. Therefore, have“Quick
loading” carried out by a specialist garage.

Vehicles with a tow hitch
For vehicles with factory-fitted towing device, at the back there is no mount
for a screw-in towing eye. Use the detachable ball rod for towing » page 230,
Hitch .WARNINGThe towing eye must always be firmly in place, otherwise the towing eye
could break whilst being towed.

We recommend having bulbs replaced by a specialist garage or seeking other
expert help in the event of any uncertainties.
▶ Switch off the ignition and all of the lights before replacing a bulb.
▶ Faulty bulbs must only be replaced with the same type of bulbs. The designa-
tion is located on the light socket or the glass bulb.
We recommend having the headlight settings checked by a specialist garage after replacing a bulb in the low, high or fog beam.
In the case of failure of a Xenon gas discharge bulb or an LED diode, visit a
specialist garage.WARNING■ Always read and observe the warnings before completing any work in the
engine compartment » page 252.■
Accidents can be caused if the road in front of the vehicle is not suffi-
ciently illuminated and the vehicle cannot or can only be seen with difficul-
ty by other road users.
■
Bulbs H7 H8 and H15 are pressurised and may burst when changing the
bulb - risk of injury! We therefore recommended wearing gloves and safety
glasses when changing a bulb.
■
Do not carry out any work on the Xenon gas discharge lamps - risk of
death!
CAUTION
Do not take hold of the glass bulb with naked fingers (even the smallest
amount of dirt reduces the working life of the light bulb). Use a clean cloth,
napkin, or similar.
Note
■ This Owner's Manual only describes the replacement of bulbs where it is pos-
sible to replace the bulbs on your own without any complications arising. Other
bulbs must be replaced by a specialist garage.■
We recommend that a box of replacement bulbs always be carried in the ve-
hicle.
