Bi-level heating

This setting allows you to d irec t air of d ifferent temp eratures from the
instrument p anel and foot outlets. The air from the foot outlets is
slig htly warmer than from the instrument p anel outl ets.

Setting the temp erature c ontrol d ial fully turned t o the red area or b lue
area d ec reases the temp erature d ifferenc e b etween t he air from the
instrument p anel outlets and the air from the foot outlets.

3. Insert the front filter assemb ly in the c ooling unit, then install the
rear filter assemb ly. NOTE Hold the filter tabs to facilitate installation.
The passenger compartment side of each filter is marked with
arrows (indicating “UP” and the direction of air flow). Ensure the
arrows point in the correct directions. Ensure each filter assembly ’s tongues and grooves fit the cor-
responding cooling unit and matching filter tongues and grooves.

4. Reinstall the c over and sec ure it using the c lip s .
NOTE
Ensure no air leaks from the cooling unit through the cover.

How to insert a CD(s)
n Inserting a CD
1. Press “LOAD” button O. If the magazine in the player has an idle
position where you can insert a disc, the “DISC” indicator associated
with the idle position will blink.
If no indicator blinks, it means that there is no idle position in the mag-azine.
2. As soon as the “DISC” indicator begins to blink, the “IN” will ap-
pear on display for a period of 15 seconds. Insert a disc during theperiod. The disc will be then automatically drawn in, and the playerwill begin to play back the first number of the disc. To insert more discs in succession, repeat Steps 1 and 2. The
magazine will be loaded with discs in the ascending order of position
number.
If you do not insert any disc in 15 seconds after you have pressed the
“LOAD” button, the player will begin to play back the first number of
the last disc you have inserted. The disc indicator steadily lights up if a disc is already inserted in
the corresponding position of the magazine. While the player is in the loading mode, if you press any of the oth-
er mode buttons “FM”
2, “AM” 1 and “TAPE” E, the player will enter
the standby mode. Press the “CD” button S to start playback.
n Inserting a disc in a desired position
1. Press the “LOAD” button. If the magazine in the player has an idle
position where you can insert a disc, the “DISC” indicator associated
with the idle position will blink.The positions in the magazine the indicator of which steadily lights up
are already loaded with discs.
2. Press the “DISC SELECT ” button
J at the position where you want
to insert a disc. The associated “DISC” indicator will blink, and the
“IN” will be displayed.
3. If you insert a disc during the 15-second period while the “IN” is on
display, the disc will be automatically drawn in, and the player will
start playback of the disc, beginning with the first number. To insert more discs in succession, repeat Steps 1 and 2.

To insert a disc
1. Press one of the “Disc select ” buttons 3 (numbered from 1 to 6)
for which the disc indicator light 2 is “OFF”.
The Disc indicator lights are located directly above the corresponding “ Disc select ” buttons.
2. The indicator will begin blinking. The blinking will last for 15 se-conds.
During this period, insert a desired disc, and the disc will begin to
play. (If any disc is not inserted during this period, the “Disc slot ”

door will close. Repeat step 1.)
Be sure to hold a disc with the label side (the side where titles areprinted) up.
3. To insert another disc, repeat step 1 and 2 choosing a differentdisc select button. To insert six discs at a time
1. Press and hold the “Disc select ” button number 1 until all disc indi-
cators begin blinking (about 1.5 seconds).
2. The indicators will blink for 15 seconds. During this period, insert
desired six discs.
3. When all discs are loaded, the first disc will begin to play. (If no
disc is inserted within this 15 seconds, the entire disc load sequencewill be canceled.) To remove a disc

2. Press the “Eject button ”
4 . The selected disc will be ejected and
the indicator light will begin blinking.
3. To remove another disc, repeat step 1 and 2 choosing a different“ Disc select ” button.
(To remove discs when the ignition switch is in the “Lock” position,
press the “Eject” button, and the first disc will be ejected. Press the
“Eject” button again, and the next disc will be ejected and so on. At
this time, the “Disc select ” buttons are disabled.)

To remove all discs at one time
1. Press and hold the “Eject” button 4 until all “Disc” indicators begin
blinking (about 1.5 seconds), and the first disc will be ejected.
2. When the disc is removed, the next one will be ejected, and so on. To replace a playing disc with another
Simply press the desired one of “Disc select ” buttons
3 (numbered
from 1 to 6) or press the “DISC UP ” or “DISC DOWN ” button on the
radio unit to select the desired disc, and the disc will begin to play. Disc indicators
Lit: when the corresponding storage tray is occupied by a disc. Blinking: Disc player is either in loading, eject or changing mode.OFF: No disc is loaded or the ignition switch is in the “LOCK” position.

Accessory power socket in the luggage compartment and dual power socket (if equipped) CAUTION
Do not attempt to use a cigarette lighter in the accessory
socket or dual power socket. Do not place any foreign objects, especially metal ones such
as coins or aluminum foil, into the accessory socket or dualpower socket. That could cause a short circuit. Always put thecap on the accessory socket and dual power socket when it isnot in use. Use only electrical appliances which are designed for 12V DC
and which consume less than 120W. Overloading the accessory
socket or dual power socket can cause a short circuit. Do not usedouble adapters or more than one electrical appliance. If the plug on your electric appliance is either too loose or too
tight for the accessory socket or dual power socket, this canresult in a poor contact or cause the plug to get stuck. Only use
plugs that fit properly. Use of an electric appliance in the accessory socket or dual
power socket for a long period of time while the engine is notrunning can cause battery discharge. Before driving your vehicle, make sure that the plug and the
cord on your electrical appliance will not interfere with your shift-ing gears and operating the accelerator and brake pedals. If theydo, do not use the electrical appliance while driving.

Fuel filler lid and cap Refueling
WARNING
Gasoline vapor is highly flammable. Before refueling, always
first stop the engine and make sure that there are no lighted ciga- rettes, open flames or electrical sparks in the adjacent area. When opening the cap, do not remove the cap quickly. Fuel
may be under pressure and spray out of the fuel filler neck espe-
cially in hot weather, which may cause injury.
CAUTION
Never add any cleaning agents to the fuel tank. The addition of
a cleaning agent may cause damage to the fuel system. Make sure that the cap is tightened until it clicks to prevent
fuel spillage in the event of an accident. Do not let fuel spill on the exterior surfaces of the vehicle.
Fuels may cause paint damage, which is not covered under the
SUBARU Limited Warranty. Always use a genuine SUBARU fuel filler cap. If you use the
wrong cap, it may not fit or have proper venting, and your fueltank and emission control system might be damaged.

7-6NOTE If the fuel filler cap is not tightened until it clicks or if the tether is caught under the cap, the CHECK ENGINE warning light maycome on. Refer to the
“Warning and indicator lights ” section
located in chapter 3.
State emission testing (U.S. only)
WARNING
Testing of an All-Wheel Drive vehicle must NEVER be performed
on a single two-wheel dynamometer. Attempting to do so willresult in uncontrolled vehicle movement and may cause an acci-
dent or injuries to persons nearby.
CAUTION
Resultant vehicle damage due to improper testing is not covered
under the SUBARU Limited Warranty and is the responsibility ofthe state inspection program or its contractors or licensees.
At state inspection time, remember to tell your inspection or service
station in advance not to place your Subaru AWD vehicle on a two-
wheel dynamometer. Otherwise, serious transmission damage willresult.
Some states have started using d ynamometers in thei r state insp ec tion
p rog rams in ord er to meet their ob lig ation und er fe d eral law to imp lement
stric ter vehic le emission stand ard s to red uc e air p ollution from c ars. A
d ynamometer is a tread mill or roller-like testing d evic e that allows your
c ar ’s wheels to turn while the c ar remains in one p lac e . Dep end ing on
the severity of a state ’s air p ollution p rob lems, the states must ad op t
either a “b asic ” or “enhanc ed ” vehic le emission insp ec tion test. Nor-
mally, a p ortion of the b asic emission test c onsist s of an emission
insp ec tor inserting an analyzer p rob e into the exha ust p ip e of an id ling
vehic le for a short p eriod of time. States with mor e severe air p ollution
p rob lems are req uired to ad op t an enhanc ed vehic le emission test. This

NOTE In order to prevent over-revving during acceleration of the
vehicle, the transmission will automatically shift to the next high- est gear if the Maximum Allowable Speed for the current gear isexceeded. Similarly, in order to prevent over-revving during deceleration
of the vehicle, the transmission will remain in the current gear ifthe speed of the vehicle is in excess of the Maximum AllowableSpeed for the gear to which the selector lever has been moved. Driving tips
Always ap p ly the foot or p arking b rake when the veh ic le is
stop p ed in the “D ”, “3 ”, “2 ”, “1 ”, or “R ” p osition.
Always set the p arking b rake when p arking your vehi c le. Do not
hold the vehic le with only the transmission. Do not keep the vehic le in a stationary p osition on an up hill g rad e
b y using the “D ”, “3 ”, “2 ” or “1 ” p osition. Use the b rake instead .
Shift lock release
If the selec tor lever d oes not move from the “P ” p osition with the b rake
p ed al d ep ressed and the release b utton p ushed in an d the ig nition
switc h in the “ON ” p osition, p erform the following step s:

rad io. Drive c arefully. Do not take unnec essary risks b y d riving in d ang erous
areas or over roug h terrain. Slow d own and emp loy extra c aution at all times. Wh en d riving off-
road , you will not have the b enefit of marked traff ic lanes, b anked
c urves, traffic sig ns and the like. Do not d rive ac ross steep slop es. Instead , d rive ei ther straig ht up or
straig ht d own the slop es. A vehic le c an muc h more e asily tip over sid e-
ways than it c an end over end . Avoid d riving straig ht up or d own slop es
that are too steep . Avoid sharp turning maneuvers, esp ec ially at hig her sp eed s.
Do not g rip the insid e or sp okes of the steering wh eel. A b ad b ump
c ould jerk the wheel and injure your hand s. Instead d rive with your fin-
g ers and thumb s on the outsid e of the rim. If d riving throug h water, suc h as when c rossing sha llow streams, first
c hec k the d ep th of the water and the b ottom of the stream b ed for firm-
ness and ensure that the b ed of the stream is flat. Drive slowly and c om-
p letely throug h the stream. The water should b e sha llow enoug h that it
d oes not reac h the vehic le ’s und erc arriag e. Water entering the eng ine air
intake or the exhaust p ip e or water sp lashing onto elec tric al p arts may
d amag e your vehic le and may c ause it to stall. Neve r attemp t to d rive
throug h rushing water; reg ard less of its d ep th, it c an wash away the
g round from und er your tires, resulting in p ossib le loss of trac tion and
even vehic le rollover. Always c hec k your b rakes for effec tiveness immed iat ely after d riving
in sand , mud or water. Do this b y d riving slowly an d step p ing on the
b rake p ed al. Rep eat that p roc ess several times to d ry out the b rake
d isc s and b rake p ad s. Do not d rive or p ark over or near flammab le materia ls suc h as d ry
g rass or fallen leaves, as they may b urn easily. Th e exhaust system is
very hot while eng ine is running and rig ht after th e eng ine stop s. This
