SRS airbags deploy as soon as a collision occurs. After deployment, SRS airbags start to deflate immedi- ately so that the
driver’ s vision is not

Driver’ s side
The SRS airb ag c an func tion only when the ig nition switc h is in the
“ ON ” p osition.
If the front sub sensors insid e the b oth front fend ers and the imp ac t
sensors in the airb ag c ontrol mod ule d etec t a c erta in p red etermined
amount of forc e d uring a frontal c ollision, the c on trol mod ule send s
sig nals to the airb ag mod ules instruc ting them to i nflate the SRS air-
b ag s. Then b oth airb ag mod ules p rod uc e g as, whic h i nstantly inflates
d river ’s and p asseng er ’s SRS airb ag s. After the d ep loyment, the SRS
airb ag s immed iately start to d eflate so that the d r iver’s vision is not
ob struc ted . The time req uired from d etec ting imp ac t to the d eflating
SRS airb ag after d ep loyment is shorter than the b li nk of an eye.
The front p asseng er ’s SRS airb ag d ep loys tog ether with d river ’s SRS
airb ag even when no one oc c up ies the front p asseng e r’s seat.
Althoug h it is hig hly unlikely that the SRS airb ag would ac tivate in a
non-ac c id ent situation, should it oc c ur, the SRS ai rb ag will d eflate
q uic kly, not ob sc uring vision and will not interfer e with the d river’s
ab ility to maintain c ontrol of the vehic le.
When the SRS airb ag d ep loys, a sud d en, fairly loud inflation noise will
b e heard and some smoke will b e released . These oc c urrenc es are

b ag system while the vehic le is b eing d riven. The S RS airb ag system
warning lig ht “AIRBAG ” will show normal system op eration b y lig hting for
ab out 6 sec ond s when the ig nition key is turned to the “ON ” p osition.
The following c omp onents are monitored b y the ind ic ator:

In the event of a malfunc tion ind ic ated b y any of f ollowing , the vehic le
should b e taken p romp tly to your nearest SUBARU d ea ler to have the
system c hec ked . Unless c hec ked and rep aired , the SR S airb ag s will not
func tion reliab ly: Flashing or flic kering of the ind ic ator lig ht.

NOTE In the following cases, contact your SUBARU dealer as soon as pos- sible.
The front part of the vehicle was involved in an accident in
which the SRS airbags did not deploy. The pad section of the steering wheel or front passenger ’s air-
bag cover is scratched, cracked, or otherwise damaged.
Precautions against vehicle modification
WARNING
To avoid accidental activation of the system or rendering the
system inoperative, which may result in serious injury, no modifi-cations should be made to any components or wiring of the SRSairbag system.This includes following modifications: Installation of custom steering wheel
Attachment of additional trim materials to the dashboard
Installation of additional electrical/electronic equipment such
as a mobile two-way radio on or near the SRS airbag system
components and/or wiring is not advisable. This could interferewith proper operation of the SRS airbag system.
CAUTION
Do not perform any of the following modifications. Such modifica-
tions can interfere with proper operation of the SRS airbag system.
Attachment of any equipment (brush bar, winches, snow
plow, skid plate, etc.) other than SUBARU genuine accessoryparts to the front end Modification of the suspension system or front end structure
Installation of a tire of different size and construction from
the tires specified on the tire placard attached to the door jamb
Always c onsult your SUBARU d ealer if you want to in stall any ac c essory
p arts to your vehic le.

When the ig nition switc h is turned to the “ON ” p osition, the seat b elt
warning lig ht will c ome on and the remind er c hime will sound to remind
d river to fasten the seat b elt.
The seat b elt warning lig ht will remain on for ab ou t six sec ond s and turn
off automatic ally after six sec ond s.
The seat b elt remind er c hime will turn off when the d river’s sid e seat b elt
is b uc kled or it will turn off automatic ally after six sec ond s.
SRS airbag system warning light AIRBAG
When the ig nition switc h is turned to the “ON ” p osition, the SRS airb ag
warning lig ht will c ome on for ab out six sec ond s an d g o out. This shows
the SRS airb ag is in normal op eration.
If this lig ht c omes on while d riving or remains ill uminated even after a
p eriod of ab out 6 sec ond s from when the ig nition ha s b een turned on, it
may ind ic ate that the SRS airb ag system is not work ing p rop erly.

Snow tires
WARNING
When replacing original tires with winter (snow) tires, make
sure you use only the same size, construction and load range as the original tires listed on the tire placard. Using other sizes andconstruction may affect speedometer/odometer calibration and
clearance between the body and tires. It also may be dangerousand lead to loss of vehicle control. You must install four winter tires that are of the same size, cir-
cumferences, construction, brand, and load range. Mixing othersizes, circumferences or constructions may result in severe me-
chanical damage to the drive train of your vehicle and may affect
ride, handling, braking and speedometer/odometer calibration. Italso may be dangerous and lead to loss of vehicle control. Do not use a combination of radial, belted bias or bias tires
since it may cause dangerous handling characteristics and leadto an accident.
Your vehic le is eq uip p ed with “all season tires ” whic h are d esig ned to
p rovid e an ad eq uate measure of trac tion, hand ling a nd b raking p er-
formanc e in year-round d riving . In winter, it may b e p ossib le to en-
hanc e p erformanc e throug h use of tires d esig ned sp e c ific ally for win-
ter d riving c ond itions.
If you c hoose to install winter tires on your vehic le, b e sure to use the
c orrec t tire size and typ e. You must install four w inter tires that are of
the same size, c onstruc tion, b rand and load rang e a nd you should
never mix rad ial, b elted b ias or b ias tires sinc e t his may result in d an-
g erous hand ling c harac teristic s. When you c hoose a tire, make sure

on your vehic le.

Jump starting
WARNING
Battery fluid is SULFURIC ACID. Do not let it come in contact
with the eyes, skin, clothing or the vehicle. If battery fluid gets on you, thoroughly flush the exposed area
with water immediately. Get medical help if the fluid has enteredyour eyes.If battery fluid is accidentally swallowed, immediately drink a
large amount of milk or water, and obtain immediate medicalhelp.
Keep everyone including children away from the battery. The gas generated by a battery explodes if a flame or spark is
brought near it. Do not smoke or light a match while jump start-ing. Never attempt jump starting if the discharged battery is frozen.
It could cause the battery to burst or explode. Whenever working on or around a battery, always wear suit-
able eye protectors, and remove metal objects such as rings,
bands or other metal jewelry. Be sure the jumper cables and clamps on them do not have
loose or missing insulation.Do not jump start unless cables in suitable condition are avail-able. A running engine can be dangerous. Keep your fingers, hands,
clothing, hair and tools away from the cooling fan, belts and anyother moving engine parts. Removing rings, watches and ties isadvisable.
CAUTION
The battery used for boosting must be 12V. Do not jump start un-
less you are sure that the booster battery is correct.
