KEYS AND DOORS33
CAUTION
Keep the back door closed while driv-
ing. If the back door is left open, it
may hit near−by objects while driving
or luggage may be unexpectedly
thrown out, causing an accident. In
addition, exhaust gases may enter the
vehicle, causing death or a serious
health hazard. Make sure to close the
back door before driving.
Before driving the vehicle, make sure
that the back door is fully closed. If
the back door is not fully closed, It
may open unexpectedly while driving,
causing an accident.
Never let anyone sit in the luggage
compartment. In the event of sudden
braking or a collision, they are sus-
ceptible to death or serious injury.
When children are in the vehicle, ob-
serve the following precautions. Fail-
ure to do so may result in death or
serious injury:
DDo not leave children alone in the
luggage compartment. If a child is
accidentally locked in the luggage
compartment, they could have heat
exhaustion.
DDo not allow a child to open or
close the back door. Doing so may
cause the back door to move unex-
pectedly, or cause the child’s
hands, head, or neck to be caught
by the closing back door.

3. Turn the cap slowly counterclock-

moving it. After removing the cap,
hang it on the cap hanger.
It is not unusual to hear a slight swoosh
when the cap is opened. When installing,
turn the cap clockwise till you hear a
click. (No key is required.)
CAUTION
DMake sure the cap is installed se-
curely to prevent fuel spillage in
the event of an accident.
DDue to the regulation of fuel tank
pressure that these caps provide,
Toyota recommends the use of a
genuine Toyota fuel tank cap.
Another fuel tank cap of matching
quality can also be used.
DWhen opening the cap, do not re-
move the cap quickly. In hot weath-
er, fuel under pressure could cause
injury by spraying out of the filler
neck if the cap is suddenly re-
moved.

3. Remove the wheel ornament.
Pry off the wheel ornament, using the
wheel bolt wrench as shown.
CAUTION
Do not try to pull off the ornament by
hand. Take due care in handling the
ornament to avoid unexpected person-
al injury.
—Loosening wheel bolts
MS41012b
4. Loosen all the wheel bolts.
Always loosen the wheel bolts before rais-
ing the vehicle.
Turn the wheel bolts counterclockwise to
loosen. To get maximum leverage, fit the
wrench to the bolt so that the handle is
on the right side, as shown above. Grab
the wrench near the end of the handle
and pull up on the handle. Be careful that
the wrench does not slip off the bolt.
Do not remove the bolts yet—just unscrew
them about one−half turn.
CAUTION
Never use oil or grease on the bolts.
The bolts may loosen and the wheels
may fall off, which could cause a se-
rious accident.

—Raising your vehicle
MS41014b
6. After making sure that no one is in
the vehicle, raise it high enough so
that the spare tire can be installed.
Remember you will need more ground
clearance when putting on the spare tire
than when removing the flat tire.
To raise the vehicle, turn the jack handle
clockwise. As the jack touches the vehicle
and begins to lift, double−check that it is
properly positioned.
CAUTION
Never get under the vehicle when the
vehicle is supported by the jack
alone.
—Changing wheels
MS41015a
7. Remove the wheel bolts and change
tires.
Lift the flat tire straight off and put it
aside.
Roll the spare wheel into position and
align the vehicle side holes with the tire
wheel holes. Then secure the wheel with
the bolts.

—Lowering your vehicle
MS41018b
9. Lower the vehicle completely and
tighten the wheel bolts.
Turn the jack handle counterclockwise to
lower the vehicle.
Use only the wheel bolt wrench and turn
it clockwise to tighten the bolts. Do not
use other tools or any additional leverage
other than your hands, such as a hammer,
pipe or your foot. Make sure the wrench
is securely engaged over the bolt.
Tighten each bolt a little at a time in the
order shown. Repeat the process until all
the bolts are tight.
CAUTION
DWhen lowering the vehicle, make
sure that all portions of your body
and all other persons around will
not be injured as the vehicle is low-
ered to the ground.
DHave the wheel bolts tightened with
torque wrench to 103 N·m (10.5
kgf·m, 76 ft·lbf), as soon as pos-
sible after changing wheels. Other-
wise, the bolts may loosen and the
wheels may fall off, which could
cause a serious accident.
DTightening the bolts too much could
cause wheel deformation or cracks,
and may result in serious accidents.
DDo not attach a heavily damaged
plastic wheel ornament. It may fly
off the wheel and cause accidents
while the vehicle is moving.
