Driving the vehicle

Multidrive
With the brake pedal depressed, shift the shift lever to D. ( P. 244)
Release the parking brake. ( P. 258)
If the parking brake is in automatic mode, the parking brake is released
automatically when shifting the shift lever to any position other than P.
( P. 256)
Gradually release the brake pedal and gently depress the accelera-
tor pedal to accelerate the vehicle.
Manual transmission
While depressing the clutch pedal, shift the shift lever to 1.
( P. 250)
Release the parking brake. ( P. 258)
If the parking brake is in automatic mode, the parking brake is released
automatically when depress the accelerator pedal. ( P. 257)
Gradually release the clutch pedal. At the same time, gently
depress the accelerator pedal to accelerate the vehicle.
The following procedures should be observed to ensure safe
driving:

Multidrive
With the shift lever in D, depress the brake pedal.
Set the parking brake ( P. 258), and shift the shift lever to P.
( P. 244)
If the parking brake is in automatic mode, the parking brake is set automat-
ically when shifting the shift lever to P. ( P. 256)
If parking on a hill, block the wheels as needed.
Vehicles without a smart entry & start system: Turn the engine
switch to the “LOCK” position to stop the engine.
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system: Press the engine switch
to stop the engine.
Lock the door, making sure that you have the key on your person.
Manual transmission
While depressing the clutch pedal, depress the brake pedal.
Set the parking brake. ( P. 258)
If the parking brake is in automatic mode, the parking brake is set automat-
ically when stop the engine. ( P. 257)
Shift the shift lever to N. (P. 250)
If parking on a hill, shift the shift lever to 1 or R and block the wheels as
needed.
Vehicles without a smart entry & start system: Turn the engine
switch to the “LOCK” position to stop the engine.
Vehicles with a smart entry & start system: Press the engine switch
to stop the engine.
Lock the door, making sure that you have the key on your person.

Vehicles with a Multidrive
Stop the vehicle.
Set the parking brake ( P. 258), and shift the shift lever to P.
If the parking brake is in automatic mode, the parking brake is set automat-
ically when shifting the shift lever to P. ( P. 256)
Press the engine switch.
Release the brake pedal and check that “ACCESSORY” on the
multi-information display is off.
Vehicles with a manual transmission
While depressing the clutch pedal, stop the vehicle.
Shift the shift lever to N.
Set the parking brake. ( P. 258)
If the parking brake is in automatic mode, the parking brake is set automat-
ically when press the engine switch to stop the engine. ( P. 257)
Press the engine switch.
Release the clutch pedal and check that “ACCESSORY” on the
multi-information display is off.

■Auto power off function
Vehicles with a Multidrive:
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY mode for more than 20 minutes or IGNI-
TION ON mode (the engine is not running) for more than an hour with the
shift lever in P, the engine switch will automatically turn off.
Vehicles with a manual transmission:
If the vehicle is left in ACCESSORY mode for more than 20 minutes or IGNI-
TION ON mode (the engine is not running) for more than an hour, the engine
switch will automatically turn off.
However, this function cannot entirely prevent battery discharge. Do not leave
the vehicle with the engine switch in ACCESSORY or IGNITION ON mode for
long periods of time when the engine is not running.

■ If the engine does not start
● The engine immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. (P. 8 7 )
Contact any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any
reliable repairer.
● Vehicles with a Multidrive: Check that the shift lever is securely set in P. The
engine may not start if the shift lever is displaced out of P.
“Shift to P position to Start.” will be displayed on the multi-information dis-
play.
■ Steering lock
After turning the engine switch off and opening and closing the doors, the
steering wheel will be locked due to the steering lock function. Operating the
engine switch again automatically cancels the steering lock.
■ When the steering lock cannot be released
“Push ENGINE Switch while Turning The
Steering Wheel in Either Direction.” will be
displayed on the multi-information display.
Check that the shift lever is set in P (Multi-
drive). Press the engine switch while turn-
ing the steering wheel left and right.

■ When the vehicle comes to a stop with the shift lever in the M position
● The transmission will automatically downshift to M1 once the vehicle is
stopped.
● After a stop, the vehicle will start off in M1.
● When the vehicle is stopped, the transmission is set at M1.
■ When driving with cruise control, dynamic radar cruise control or
dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range activated (if
equipped)
Even when performing the following with the intent of enabling engine brak-
ing, engine braking will not activate because cruise control, dynamic radar
cruise control or dynamic radar cruise control with full-speed range will not be
canceled.
● When switching the driving mode to sport mode while driving in D position.

■ Downshifting restrictions warning buzzer
To help ensure safety and driving per formance, downshifting operation may
sometimes be restricted. In some circumstances, downshifting may not be
possible even when the shift lever is operated. (A buzzer will sound twice.)
■ Shift lock system
The shift lock system is a system to prevent accidental operation of the shift
lever in starting.
The shift lever can be shifted from P only when the engine switch is in the
“ON” position (vehicles without a smart entry & start system) or IGNITION ON
mode (vehicles with a smart entry & start system), and the brake pedal is
being depressed.
