RCTA (Rear Cross Traffic Alert)
The RCTA function uses the BSM rear side radar sensors installe d
behind the rear bumper. This function is intended to assist the driver
in checking areas that are not easily visible when backing up.
Outside rear view mirror indicators
When a vehicle approaching from the right or left at the rear of the vehicle
is detected, both outside rear view mirror indicators will flas h.
RCTA buzzer
If a vehicle approaching from the right or left at the rear of the vehicle is
detected, a buzzer will sound. The buzzer also sounds for appro ximately 1
second immediately after the RCTA function is operated to turn the system
on.
“RCTA OFF” indicator
Illuminates when the Rear Cross Traffic Alert is disabled.

“RCTA”.
When the RCTA function is disabled, the “RCTA OFF” indicator ( P. 89)
illuminates.
(Each time the engine switch is turned off then changed to ON, the RCTA
function will be enabled automatically.)
■ The outside rear view mirror indicators visibility
When under strong sunlight, the outside rear view mirror indica tor may be dif-
ficult to see.
■ Hearing the RCTA buzzer
The RCTA buzzer may be difficult to hear over loud noises, such as if the
audio system volume is high.
■ When “RCTA Unavailable.” is shown on the multi-information display
Water, snow mud, etc., may be built up in the vicinity of the s ensor area of
bumper ( P. 272).
Removing the water, snow, mud, etc., from the vicinity of the s ensor area
bumper should return it to normal.
Also, the sensor may not function normally when used in extremely hot or
cold weather
■ When “RCTA Malfunction Visit You r Dealer.” is shown on the multi-infor-
mation display
There may be a sensor malfunction or misaligned. Have the vehicle
inspected by your Toyota dealer.

The RCTA functions when your vehicle is in reverse. It can dete ct
other vehicles approaching from the right or left rear of the v ehicle. It
uses radar sensors to alert the driver of the other vehicle’s existence
through flashing the outside rear view mirror indicators and so unding
a buzzer.

■Cautions regarding the use of the function
The driver is solely responsible for safe driving. Always drive safely, taking
care to observe your surroundings.
The RCTA function is only a supplementary function which alerts the driver
that a vehicle is approaching from the right or left at the rea r of the vehicle.
As the RCTA function may not function correctly under certain c onditions,
the driver’s own visual confirmation of safety is necessary. Ov er reliance on
this function may lead to an accident resulting death or seriou s injury.

Conditions under which the RCTA function will not detect a vehicle
The RCTA function is not designed to detect the following types of vehicles
and/or objects:
● Vehicles approaching from directly behind
● Vehicles backing up in a parking space next to your vehicle
● Guardrails, walls, signs, parked vehicles and similar stationar y objects

●Small motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, etc.*
●Vehicles moving away from your vehicle
● Vehicles approaching from the parking spaces next to your vehic le

Conditions under which the RCTA function may not function corre ctly
● The RCTA function may not detect vehicles correctly in the following situa-
tions:
• When the sensor is misaligned due to a strong impact to the se nsor or its
surrounding area
• When mud, snow, ice, a sticker, etc., is covering the sensor o r surround-
ing area on the rear bumper
• When driving on a road surface that is wet with standing water during bad
weather, such as heavy rain, snow, or fog
• When multiple vehicles are approaching with only a small gap b etween
each vehicle
• When a vehicle is approaching at high speed
• Immediately after the RCTA function is set to on
• Immediately after the engine is started with the RCTA function is set to on
• When backing up on a slope with a
sharp change in grade
• When backing out of a shallow angle parking spot
• When the sensors cannot detect a vehicle due to obstructions

Malfunction indicator lamp (warning buzzer) Indicates a malfunction in:
• The electronic engine control system;
• The electronic throttle control system; or
• The electronic continuously variable transmission.
 Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer

SRS warning light
Indicates a malfunction in:
• The SRS airbag system; or
• The seat belt pretensioner system.
 Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer
immediately.

Indicates a malfunction in the RCTA (Rear Crossing Traffic
Alert) function
 Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer
immediately.
When a buzzer does not sound:
Indicates that the rear bumper around the radar sensor is
covered with dirt, etc. (P. 272)
 Follow the instructions dis played on the multi-infor-

Slip indicatorIndicates a malfunction in:
• The VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) system;
• The TRAC (Traction Control) system; or
• The hill-start assist control system.
The light will flash when the VSC or the TRAC is operat-
ing. ( P. 287)
 Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer
immediately.

Indicates a malfunction in the electric parking brake

vehicle being extremely hot/cold, or dirt around a front

If the PCS (Pre-Collision System) or VSC (Vehicle Stability
Control) system is disabled, the PCS warning light will illu-

Parking brake indicator (warning buzzer) It is possible that the parking brake is not fully engaged or
released
 Operate the parking brake switch once again.
This light comes on when the parking brake is not
released. If the light turns off after the parking brake is ful ly
released, the system is operating normally.
Low fuel level warning light
Indicates that remaining fuel is approximately 2.0 gal.
(7.5 L, 1.6 Imp.gal.) or less
 Refuel the vehicle.

■SRS warning light
This warning light system monitors the airbag sensor assembly, front impact
sensors, side impact sensors (front door), side impact sensors (front), side
impact sensors (rear), driver’s seat position sensor, driver’s seat belt buckle
switch, front passenger occupant classification system, “AIR BA G ON” indica-
tor light, “AIR BAG OFF” indicator light, front passenger’s sea t belt buckle
switch, seat belt pretensioners, airbags, interconnecting wirin g and power
sources. ( P. 32)
■ Electric power steering system wa rning light (warning buzzer)
When the battery charge becomes insufficient or the voltage tem porarily
drops, the electric power steering system warning light may com e on and the
warning buzzer may sound.
■ If the malfunction indicator lamp comes on while driving
For some models, the malfunction indicator lamp will come on if the fuel tank
becomes completely empty. If the fuel tank is empty, refuel the vehicle imme-
diately. The malfunction indicator lamp will go off after several trips.
If the malfunction indicator lamp does not go off, contact your Toyota dealer.
■ Front passenger detection sensor, seat belt reminder and warnin g
buzzer
● If luggage is placed on the front passenger seat, the front pas senger detec-
tion sensor may cause the warning light to flash and the warnin g buzzer to
sound even if a passenger is not sitting in the seat.
● If a cushion is placed on the seat, the sensor may not detect a passenger,
and the warning light may not operate properly.
■ Warning light operat ions for unfastened rear passenger seat bel ts
● When opening and closing the rear door, the warning light comes on for
approximately 34 seconds.
● When any of the rear seat belts are unfastened, the warning lig ht comes on.
When the rear doors are opened and closed while the warning lig ht is on,
the warning light will turn off after approximately 34 seconds.
