When trouble arises
■If a message that indicates the need for referring to Owner’s Manual is
displayed
● If “Engine Coolant Temperature High.”is shown, follow the instructions
(P. 757).
● If the following messages are shown, there may be a malfunction. Immedi-
ately stop the vehicle in a safe place and contact any authoriz ed Toyota
retailer or Toyota authorized repairer, or any reliable repaire r. Continuing to
drive the vehicle may be dangerous.
• “Braking Power Low.”
• “Charging System Malfunction.”
• “Engine Oil Pressure Low.”
● If the following messages are shown, there may be a malfunction. Immedi-
ately have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Toyota retai ler or Toyota
authorized repairer, or any reliable repairer.
• “Hybrid System Malfunction.”
• “Check Engine.”
• “Hybrid Battery System Malfunction.”
• “Accelerator system Malfunction.”
• “Entry & Start System Malfunction.”
• “Exhaust filter full.” (P. 531)
• “Hybrid System Stopped”
• “Engine Stopped”
● If the “Low 12-Volt Battery.” is shown,
• When the display goes off after several seconds (displays for about 6
seconds):
Maintain the hybrid system operation for more than 15 minutes a nd
charge the 12-volt battery.
• When the display does not go off:
Start up the hybrid system using the procedures: P. 749
● If “Maintenance required for Traction battery cooling parts. See owner’s
manual.” is shown, the filters may be clogged, the air intake v ents may be
blocked, or there may be a gap i n the duct. Therefore, perform the following
correction procedure.
• If the air intake vents and filters of the hybrid battery (tra ction battery) are
dirty, perform the procedure on P. 640 to clean them.
• If the warning message is shown when the air intake vents and filters of
the hybrid battery (traction battery) are not dirty, have the v ehicle
inspected by any authorized Toyota retailer or Toyota authorize d repairer,
or any reliable repairer immediately.

■ If “Engine Oil Level Low. Add or Replace Oil.”is displayed
The engine oil level is low. Check the level of the engine oil, and add if neces-
sary.
This message may appear if the vehicle is stopped on a slope. M ove the
vehicle to a level surface and check to see if the message disa ppears.
■ If “Hybrid System Stopped. Steering Power Low.”is displayed
This message is displayed if the hybrid system is stopped while driving.
When steering wheel operations are heavier than usual, grip the steering
wheel firmly and operate it using more force than usual.
■ If “Hybrid System Overheated. Reduced Output Power.” is shown
This message may be shown when driving under severe operating c ondi-
tions. (For example, when driving up a long steep hill.)
Handling method: P. 757
■ If “Depress Brake When Vehicle is Stopped. Hybrid System may Over-
heat.” is shown
The message may be shown when the accelerator pedal is depresse d to hold
the vehicle while the vehicle is stopped on an uphill, etc.
The hybrid system may overheat. Release the accelerator pedal a nd depress
the brake pedal.
■ If “Traction battery needs to be protected. Shift into to restart.” is
shown
This message is displayed when the hybrid battery (traction bat tery) charge
has become extremely low because the shift lever has been left in N for a cer-
tain amount of time.
When operating the vehicle, shift to P and restart the hybrid s ystem.
■ If “Traction battery needs to be protected. Refrain from the use of
position.” is shown
This message may be displayed when the shift lever is in N.
As the hybrid battery (traction battery) cannot be charged when the shift lever
is in N, shift the shift lever to P when the vehicle is stopped .
■ If “Shift is in Release Accelerator Before Shifting” is shown
Message is displayed when the accelerator pedal has been depres sed and
the shift lever is in N.
Release the accelerator pedal and shift the shift lever to D or R.

When trouble arises
WARNING
■To prevent an accident or injury when inspecting under the hood of
your vehicle
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in serious injury such as burns.
● If steam is seen coming from under the hood, do not open the hood until
the steam has subsided. The engine compartment may be very hot.
● After the hybrid system has been turned off, check that the indicator on the
power switch and the “READY” indicator are off.
When the hybrid system is operating, the gasoline engine may au tomati-
cally start, or the cooling fans may suddenly operate even if t he gasoline
engine stops. Do not touch or approach rotating parts such as t he fan,
which may lead to fingers or clothing (especially a tie, a scar f or a muffler)
getting caught, resulting in serious injury.
● Do not loosen the coolant reservoir caps while the hybrid system and radi-
ator are hot.
High temperature steam or coolant could spray out.
NOTICE
■ When adding engine/power control unit coolant
Add coolant slowly after the hybrid system has cooled down suff iciently.
Adding cool coolant to a hot hybrid system too quickly can caus e damage to
the hybrid system.
■ To prevent damage to the cooling system
Observe the following precautions:
● Avoid contaminating the coolant with foreign matter (such as sand or dust,
etc.).
● Do not use any coolant additive.
