Continuously variable transmission
With the brake pedal depressed , shift the shift lever to D.
(  P. 181, 184)
Release the parking brake. ( P. 1 9 2 )
Gradually release the brake pedal and gently depress the accele ra-
tor pedal to accelerate the vehicle.
Manual transmission
While depressing the clutch p edal, shift the shift lever to 1.
(  P. 189)
Release the parking brake. ( P. 1 9 2 )
Gradually release the clutch pedal. At the same time, gently
depress the accelerator pedal to accelerate the vehicle.
Continuously variable transmission
With the shift lever in D, depress the brake pedal.
If necessary, set the parking brake.
If the vehicle is to be stopped for an extended period of time, shift the shift
lever to P or N. ( P. 181, 184)
Manual transmission
While depressing the clutch pedal, depress the brake pedal.
If necessary, set the parking brake.
If the vehicle is to be stopped for an extended period of time, shift the shift
lever to N. (P. 189)

Continuously variable transmission
With the shift lever in D, depress the brake pedal.
Set the parking brake ( P. 192), and shift the shift lever to P.
(  P. 181, 184)
Vehicles without a smart key sys tem: Turn the engine switch to the
“LOCK” position to stop the engine.
Vehicles with a smart key system : Press the engine switch to stop
the engine.
Lock the door, making sure that you have the key on your person.
If parking on a hill, block the wheels as needed.
Manual transmission
While depressing the clutch pedal, depress the brake pedal.
Shift the shift lever to N. ( P. 189)
If parking on a hill, shift the shift lever to 1 or R.
Set the parking brake. ( P. 1 9 2 )
Vehicles without a smart key sys tem: Turn the engine switch to the
“LOCK” position to stop the engine.
Vehicles with a smart key system : Press the engine switch to stop
the engine.
Lock the door, making sure that you have the key on your person.
If parking on a hill, block the wheels as needed.

Make sure that the parking brake is set and shift the shift lever to D.
Gently depress the accelerator pedal.
Release the parking brake.
Manual transmission
With the parking brake firmly set and the clutch pedal fully
depressed, shift the shift lever to 1.
Lightly depress the accelerato r pedal at the same time as gradu ally
releasing the clutch pedal.
Release the parking brake.
■ When starting off on an uphill
The hill-start assist control will activate. ( P. 257)
■ Driving in the rain
●Drive carefully when it is raining, because visibility will be reduced, the win-
dows may become fogged-up, and the road will be slippery.
● Drive carefully when it starts to rain, because the road surface will be espe-
cially slippery.
● Refrain from high speeds when driving on an expressway in the r ain,
because there may be a layer of water between the tires and the road sur-
face, preventing the steering and brakes from operating properl y.

NOTICE
■When driving the vehicle (vehic les with a manual transmission)
● Do not depress the accelerator and brake pedals at the same tim e during
driving, as this may restrain the engine output.
● Do not shift gears unless the clutch pedal is fully depressed. After shifting,
do not release the clutch pedal abruptly. Doing so may damage t he clutch,
transmission and gears.
● Observe the following to prevent the clutch from being damaged.
• Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving.
Doing so may cause clutch trouble.
• Do not use any gear other than the 1st gear when starting off and mov-
ing forward.
Doing so may damage the clutch.
• Do not use the clutch to hold the vehicle when stopping on an uphill
grade.
Doing so may damage the clutch.
● Do not shift the shift lever to R when the vehicle is still mov ing. Doing so
may damage the clutch, transmission and gears.
■ When parking the vehicle (vehicles with a continuously variable trans-
mission)
Always set the parking brake, and shift the shift lever to P. F ailure to do so
may cause the vehicle to move or the vehicle may accelerate sud denly if
the accelerator pedal is accidentally depressed.
■ Avoiding damage to vehicle parts
● Do not turn the steering wheel fully in either direction and ho ld it there for
an extended period of time.
Doing so may damage the power steering motor.
● When driving over bumps in the road, drive as slowly as possibl e to avoid
damaging the wheels, underside of the vehicle, etc.

Check that the parking brake is set.
Check that the shift lever is set in P.
Firmly depress the brake pedal.
Turn the engine switch to the “START” position and start the
engine.
Manual transmission
Check that the park ing brake is set.
Check that the shift lever is set in N.
Firmly depress the clutch pedal.
Turn the engine switch to the “START” position and start the
engine.
“LOCK”
The steering wheel is locked and
the key can be removed. (Vehicles
with a continuously variable trans-
mission: The key can be removed
only when the shift lever is in P.)
“ACC”
Some electrical components such
as the audio system can be used.
“ON”
All electrical components can be used.
“START”
For starting the engine.

Check that the parking brake is set.
Continuously variable transmission: Check that the shift lever is set
in P. Firmly depress the brake pedal.
Manual transmission: Check that t he shift lever is set in N. Firmly
depress the clutch pedal.

If it is not displayed, the engine cannot be started.
Press the engine switch shortly
and firmly.
When operating the engine switch,
one short, firm press is enough. It
is not necessary to press and hold
the switch.
The engine will crank until it starts
or for up to 30 seconds, whichever
is less.
Continue depressing the brake
pedal (continuously variable trans-
mission) or clutch pedal (manual
transmission) until the engine is
completely started.
The engine can be started from any engine switch mode.
Engine (ignition) switch (vehicles with a
smart key system)
Performing the following opera tions when carrying the elec-
tronic key on your person starts the engine or changes engine
switch modes.

Stop the vehicle.
Set the parking brake (P. 192), and shift the shift lever to P.
Press the engine switch.
Release the brake pedal and chec k that “Power On” on the multi-
information di splay is off.
Manual transmission
Stop the vehicle.
Shift the shift lever to N.
Set the parking brake. ( P. 1 9 2 )
Press the engine switch.
Release the clutch pedal and check that “Power On” on the multi-
information di splay is off.

Modes can be changed by pressing the engine switch with the brake
pedal (continuously variable tr ansmission) or clutch pedal (man ual
transmission) released. (The mode changes each time the switch is
pressed.)
Off

The emergency flashers can be

ACCESSORY mode
Some electrical components such
as the audio system can be used.
“Power On” will be displayed on

All electrical components can be

*: Vehicles with a continuously variable transmission: If the sh ift lever is in a
position other than P when turning off the engine, the engine s witch will be
turned to ACCESSORY mode, not to off.

Fully depress the clutch pedal before operating the shift lever, and
then release it slowly.
Shift the shift lever to R while lift-
ing up the ring section.

NOTICE
■To prevent damage to the transmission
● Do not lift up the ring section except when shifting the lever to R.
● Shift the shift lever to R only when the vehicle is stationary.
