Before driving

Security feature
If a door is not opened within approximately 60 seconds after t he vehicle is
unlocked, the security feature automatically locks the vehicle again.
■ Alarm (vehicles with a smart key system)
Using the wireless remote control to lock the doors will set th e alarm system.

■ Conditions affecting operation
Vehicles without a smart key system
The wireless remote control function may not operate normally i n the follow-
ing situations:
● When the wireless key battery is depleted
● Near a TV tower, electric power plant, gas station, radio stati on, large dis-
play, airport or other facility that generates strong radio wav es or electri-
cal noise
● When carrying a portable radio, cellular phone or other wireles s commu-
nication devices
● When the wireless key is in contact with, or is covered by a me tallic
object
● When other wireless key (that emit radio waves) is being used n earby
● If window tint with a metallic content or metallic objects are attached to
the rear window

The vehicle can be locked and unlocked using the entry function,
wireless remote control, k ey or door lock switch.

Locking the doors from the outside without a key
Move the inside lock but ton to the lock position.
Close the door.
Vehicles with a smart key system
The door cannot be locked if the electronic key is left inside the vehi-
cle.
The key may not be detected correctly and the door may be locke d.

Window open/close function linked to door operation
In order to make opening and closing the doors easier, completely closed
windows are linked to door operations. Therefore, when a door is opened, its
window opens slightly. When a door is closed, its window closes completely.
However, if the battery has discharged or is disconnected, this function will
not operate. ( P. 448)
■ If the smart key system has been deactivated in a customized setting
(vehicles with a smart key system)
Use the wireless remote control or mechanical key. ( P. 38, 440)
WARNING
■To prevent an accident
Observe the following precautions while driving the vehicle.
Failure to do so may result in a door opening and an occupant f alling out,
resulting in death or serious injury.
● Always use a seat belt.
● Always lock both side doors.
● Ensure that both side doors are properly closed.
● Do not pull the inside handle of the doors while driving.
The doors may be opened and the passengers are thrown out of th e vehi-
cle and it may result in serious injury or death.

Trunk
The trunk can be opened using the key, trunk opener, entry function
or wireless remote control.
■ Opening the trunk from inside the vehicle
Press and hold the opener
switch to release the trunk lid.
■ Opening the trunk from outside the vehicle
Key (vehicles without a smart key system)
Turn the master key clockwise
to release the trunk lid.

Canceling the trunk opener feature
To protect luggage stored in the trunk against theft, do the fo llowing:
Turn the main switch in the trunk

■Trunk light
The trunk light turns on when the trunk is opened.
■ Function to prevent the trunk be ing locked with the electronic key
inside (vehicles with a smart key system)
● When all doors are being locked, closing the trunk lid with the electronic
key left inside the trunk will sound an alarm.
In this case, the trunk lid can be opened using the entry funct ion.
● Even when the spare electronic key is put in the trunk with all the doors
locked, the key confinement prevention function can be activate d so the
trunk can be opened. In order to prevent theft, take all electr onic keys
with you when leaving the vehicle.
● Even when the electronic key is put in the trunk with all the d oors are
locked, the key may not be detected depending on the places and the
surrounding radio wave conditions. In this case, the key confinement pre-
vention function cannot be activated, causing the doors to lock when the
trunk is closed. Make sure to check where the key is before clo sing the
trunk.
● The key confinement prevention function cannot be activated if any one
of the doors is unlocked. In this case, open the trunk using th e trunk
opener.
■ Internal trunk release lever
■ Using the mechanical key (vehicles with a smart key system)
The trunk can be also opened using the mechanical key. ( P. 440)

The trunk lid can be opened by pulling on
the glow-in-the-dark lever located on the
inside of the trunk lid.
The lever will continue to glow for some
time after the trunk lid is closed.

Caution while driving
●Keep the trunk lid closed while driving.
If the trunk lid is left open, it may hit near-by objects while driving or lug-
gage in the trunk may be unexpectedly thrown out, causing an ac cident.
In addition, exhaust gases may enter the vehicle, causing death or a seri-
ous health hazard. Make sure to close the trunk lid before driv ing.
● Before driving the vehicle, make sure that the trunk lid is fully closed. If the
trunk lid is not fully closed, it may open unexpectedly while d riving, caus-
ing an accident.
● Never let anyone sit in the trunk. In the event of sudden braki ng or a colli-
sion, they are susceptible to death or serious injury.
■ When children are in the vehicle
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
●Do not allow children to play in the trunk.
If a child is accidentally locked in the trunk, they could suffer from heat
exhaustion, suffocation or other injuries.
● Do not allow a child to open or close the trunk lid.
Doing so may cause the trunk lid to operate unexpectedly, or ca use the
child’s hands, head, or neck to be caught by the closing trunk lid.

WARNING
■Using the trunk
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may cause parts of the body to be caught, resu lting in seri-
ous injury.
● Remove any heavy loads, such as snow and ice, from the trunk li d before
opening it. Failure to do so may cause the trunk lid to suddenl y shut again
after it is opened.
● When opening or closing the trunk lid, thoroughly check to make sure the
surrounding area is safe.
● If anyone is in the vicinity, make sure they are safe and let t hem know that
the trunk is about to open or close.
● Use caution when opening or closing the trunk lid in windy weat her as it
may move abruptly in strong wind.
● The trunk lid may suddenly shut if it is
not opened fully. It is more difficult to
open or close the trunk lid on an
incline than on a level surface, so
beware of the trunk lid unexpectedly
opening or closing by itself. Make
sure that the trunk lid is fully open
and secure before using the trunk.
