(a) Programming the HomeLink
The HomeLink in your vehicle has 3
buttons and you can store one program
for each button.
To ensure correct programming into the
HomeLink
, install a new battery in the
hand- held transmitter prior to program-
ming.
The battery side of the hand- held trans-
mitter must be pointed away from the
HomeLink
 during the programming pro-
cess.
For Canadian users, follow the procedure
in Programming an entrance gate/pro-
gramming all devices in the Canadian
marketº.
1. Decide which of 3 HomeLink
 buttons
you want to program.
2. Place your hand- held garage transmit-
ter 25 to 75 mm (1 to 3 in.) away from
the surface of the HomeLink
.
Keep the indicator light on the HomeLink

in view while programming.3. Simultaneously press and hold the
hand- held garage transmitter button
along with the selected HomeLink
 but-
ton.
4. When the indicator light on the
HomeLink
 changes from a slow to a
rapid flash after 20 seconds, you can
release both buttons.
5. Test the operation of the HomeLink
 by
pressing the newly programmed button.
If programming a garage door opener,
check to see if the garage door opens
and closes.
If the garage door does not operate, iden-
tify if your garage transmitter is of the
Rolling Codeº type. Press and hold the
programmed HomeLink
 button. The ga-
rage door has the rolling code feature if
the indicator light (on the HomeLink
)
flashes rapidly and then remains lit after
2 seconds. If your garage transmitter is
the Rolling Codeº type, proceed to the
heading Programming a rolling code sys-
temº.
6. Repeat steps 2 through 5 for each re-
maining HomeLink
 button to program
another device.Programming a rolling code system
If your device is Rolling Codeº
equipped, it is necessary to follow
steps 1 through 4 under the heading
Programming the HomeLink
º before
proceeding with the steps listed below.
1. Locate the trainingº button on the ceil-
ing mounted garage door opener motor.
The exact location and color of the
button may vary by brand of garage
door opener. Refer to the owner 's
guide supplied by the garage door
opener manufacturer for the location of
this trainingº button.
2. Press the trainingº button on the ceil-
ing mounted garage door opener motor.
Following this step, you have 30 seconds
in which to initiate step 3 below.
3. Press and release the vehicle's pro-
grammed HomeLink
 button twice. The
garage door may open. If the door
does open, the programming process is
complete. If the door does not open,
press and release the button a third
time. This third press and release will
complete the programming process by
opening the garage door.

The ceiling mounted garage door opener
motor should now recognize the
HomeLink
 unit and be able activate the
garage door up/down.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for each re-
maining HomeLink
 button to program
another rolling code system.
Programming an entrance gate/program-
ming all devices in the Canadian market
1. Decide which of the 3 HomeLink
 but-
tons you want to program.
2. Place your hand- held gate/device
transmitter 25 to 75 mm (1 to 3 in.)
away from the surface of the
HomeLink
.
Keep the indicator light on the HomeLink

in view while programming.
3. Press and hold the selected
HomeLink
 button.
4. Continuously press and release (cycle)
the hand- held gate/device transmitter
button every two seconds until step 5
is complete.
5. When the indicator light on the
HomeLink
 changes from a slow to a
rapid flash after 20 seconds, you can
release both buttons.6. Test the operation of the HomeLink
 by
pressing the newly programmed button.
Check to see if the gate/device oper-
ates correctly.
7. Repeat steps 1 through 6 for each re-
maining HomeLink
 button to program
another device.
Programming other devices
To program other devices such as home
security systems, home door locks or
lighting, contact your authorized Toyota
dealer for assistance.
Reprogramming a button
Individual HomeLink

buttons cannot be
erased, however, to reprogram a single
button, follow the procedure Programming
the HomeLink
º.
(b) Operating the HomeLink

To operate the HomeLink, press the
appropriate HomeLink button to activate
the programmed device. The HomeLink
indicator light should come on. The
HomeLink continues to send the signal
for up to 20 seconds as long as the
button is pressed.(c) Erasing the entire HomeLink

memory (all three programs)
To erase all previously programmed codes
at one time, press and hold down the 2
outside buttons for 20 seconds until the
indicator light flashes.
If you sell your vehicle, be sure to erase
the programs stored in the HomeLink

memory.

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
HINT:

This Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS) does not use a throttle cable.

This throttle position sensor is a non-contact type.
The throttle position sensor is mounted on the throttle body and it detects the opening angle of the throttle
valve. This sensor is electronically controlled and uses Hall-effect elements, so that accurate control and
reliability can be obtained. The throttle position sensor has 2 sensor elements/signal outputs: VTA1 and
VTA2. VTA1 is used to detect the throttle opening angle and VTA2 is used to detect malfunctions in VTA1.
Voltage applied to VTA1 and VTA2 change between 0 V and 5 V in proportion to the opening angle of the
throttle valve. There are several checks that the ECM performs to confirm proper operation of the throttle
position sensor and VTA1.
The ECM judges the current opening angle of the throttle valve from these signals input from terminals VTA1
and VTA2, and the ECM controls the throttle motor to make the throttle valve angle properly in response to
driver inputs.

DTC P0505 IDLE AIR CONTROL SYSTEM
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
The idle speed is controlled by the Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS).
The ETCS is composed of the throttle motor, which operates the throttle valve, and the throttle position sen-
sor, which detects the opening angle of the throttle valve.
The ECM controls the throttle motor to provide the proper throttle valve opening angle to obtain the target
idle speed.
The ECM regulates the idle speed by opening and closing the throttle valve using the ETCS. The ECM con-
cludes that the idle speed control ECM function is malfunctioning if: 1) the actual idle RPM varies more than
the specified amount five times or more during a drive cycle, or 2) a learning value of the idle speed control
remains at the maximum or minimum five times or more during a drive cycle. The ECM will turn on the MIL
and set a DTC.
Example:
If the actual idle RPM varies from the target idle RPM by more than 200* rpm five times during a drive cycle,
the ECM will turn on the MIL and will set a DTC.

DTC P0505 IDLE AIR CONTROL SYSTEM
MONITOR DESCRIPTION
The idle speed is controlled by the Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS).
The ETCS is composed of the throttle motor, which operates the throttle valve, and the throttle position sen-
sor, which detects the opening angle of the throttle valve.
The ECM controls the throttle motor to provide the proper throttle valve opening angle to obtain the target
idle speed.
The ECM regulates the idle speed by opening and closing the throttle valve using the ETCS. The ECM con-
cludes that the idle speed control ECM function is malfunctioning if: 1) the actual idle RPM varies more than
the specified amount five times or more during a drive cycle, or 2) a learning value of the idle speed control
remains at the maximum or minimum five times or more during a drive cycle. The ECM will turn on the MIL
and set a DTC.
Example:
If the actual idle RPM varies from the target idle RPM by more than 200*
1 rpm five times during a drive cycle,
the ECM will turn on the MIL and will set a DTC.

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The throttle actuator is operated by the ECM and it opens and closes the throttle valve.
The opening angle of the throttle valve is detected by the throttle position sensor which is mounted on the
throttle body. The throttle position sensor provides feedback to the ECM. This feedback allows the ECM to
control the throttle actuator and monitor the throttle opening angle in response to driver inputs.
HINT:
This Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS) does not use a throttle cable.

MONITOR DESCRIPTION
The ECM monitors the flow of electrical current through the electronic throttle actuator, and detects malfunc-
tions or open circuits in the throttle motor based on the value of the electrical current. When the current devi-
ates from the standard, the ECM concludes that there is a fault in the throttle motor. Or, if the throttle valve
is not functioning properly (for example, stuck on), the ECM concludes that there is a fault and turns on the
MIL and a DTC is set.
Example:
When the current is more than 10 A, or the current is less than 0.5 A when the actuator driving duty ratio
is more than 80 %, the ECM concludes that the current is deviated from the standard, turns on the MIL and
a DTC is set.
FAIL-SAFE
If the ETCS has a malfunction, the ECM cuts off current to the throttle actuator. The throttle control valve
returns to a predetermined opening angle (approximately 16) by the force of the return spring. The ECM
then adjusts the engine output by controlling the fuel injection (intermittent fuel-cut) and ignition timing in
accordance with the accelerator pedal opening angle to enable the vehicle to continue at a minimal speed.
If the accelerator pedal is depressed firmly and slowly, the vehicle can be driven slowly.
If a ºpassº condition is detected and then the ignition switch is turned OFF, the fail-safe operation will stop
and the system will return to normal condition.

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
HINT:

This Electronic Throttle Control System (ETCS) does not use a throttle cable.

This description is for the accelerator pedal position sensor.
The Accelerator Pedal Position (APP) sensor is mounted on the accelerator pedal to detect the angle of the
accelerator pedal. This sensor is electronically controlled and uses Hall-effect elements.
In the accelerator pedal position sensor, the voltage applied to terminals VPA and VPA2 of the ECM changes
between 0 V and 5 V in proportion to the angle of the accelerator pedal. The VPA is a signal to indicate the
actual accelerator pedal angle and is used for the engine control. VPA2 is used to detect malfunctions of
the sensor itself.
The ECM monitors the accelerator pedal angle from VPA and VPA2 signal outputs, and controls the throttle
motor based on these signals.
