When locking the doors using the key
Vehicles without smart key system
The door cannot be locked if the key is in the engine switch.
Vehicles with smart key system
The door cannot be locked if the “POWER” switch is in ACCESSORY or
ON mode, or the electronic key is left inside the vehicle.
Depending on the position of the electronic key, the key may not be
detected correctly and the door may be locked.
■ Using the mechanical key
The doors can also be locked and unlocked with the mechanical key.

■ Customization that can be co nfigured at Toyota dealer
Settings (e.g. door unlocking function) can be changed.

CAUTION
■To prevent an accident
Observe the following precautions while driving the vehicle.
Failing to do so may result in a door opening and an occupant falling out,
resulting in death or serious injury.
●Always use a seat belt.
● Always lock the doors.
● Ensure that all doors are properly closed.
● Do not pull the inside handle of the doors while driving.
The doors may be opened and the passengers are thrown out of the vehi-
cle and it may result in serious injury or death.
Be especially careful of the front doors, as they may be opened even if the
inside lock button is in the locked position.
● Set the rear door child protector locks when children are seated in the rear
seats.

Before driving

If the back door opener is inoperative
The back door can be operated from the inside.
■ The power back door can be opened when
Vehicles without smart key system
● The engine switch is in the “ON” position, and the shift lever is in P.
● The engine switch is in the “ACC” or “LOCK” position.
Vehicles with smart key system
● The “POWER” switch is in ON mode, and the shift lever is in P.
● The “POWER” switch is OF F or in ACCESSORY mode.
The power back door can be opened even when the glass hatch is opened.
The glass hatch will not be closed when the power back door is being
closed. Close the glass hatch manually.
■ Jam protection function (vehicles with power back door)
If anything obstructs the power back door while it is closing/opening, the
back door will automatically operate in the opposite direction.
■ If the power back door does not work
The back door must be initialized. To initialize, close the back door com-
pletely by hand.
Remove the cover.

CAUTION
●
On an incline, the back door may fall after it opens automatically. Make
sure the back door is fully open and secure.
● In the following situations, the power back door may detect an abnormali\
ty
and automatic operation may be stopped. In this case, the back door has
to be operated manually. Take extra care in this situation, as the stopped
back door may suddenly fall, causing an accident.
• When the back door contacts an obstacle
• Vehicles without smart key system: When the battery voltage suddenly
drops, such as when the engine switch is turned to the “ON” position or
the hybrid system is started during automatic operation
• Vehicles with smart key system: When the battery voltage suddenly drops, such as when the “POWER” switch is turned to ON mode or the
hybrid system is started during automatic operation
● Do not attach any accessories other than genuine Toyota parts to the back
door. The power back door may not operate, causing itself to malfunction,
or the back door may fall closed again after it is opened.
■ Jam protection function (vehicles with power back door)
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may cause death or serious injury.
●Never use any part of your body to intentionally activate the jam protection
function.
● The jam protection function may not work if something gets caught just
before the back door fully closes. Be careful not to catch fingers or any-
thing else.
● The jam protection function may not work depending on the shape of the
object that is caught. Be careful not to catch fingers or anything else.

Before driving
Anti-glare inside rear view mirror
Glare from the headlights of vehicles behind can be reduced by
using the following functions.
■Manual anti-glare inside rear view mirror
Normal position
Anti-glare position
■ Auto anti-glare inside rear view mirror
In automatic mode, sensors are used to detect the headlights of
vehicles behind and the reflecte d light is automatically reduced.

The “POWER” switch is in ACCESSORY or ON mode.
■ When the mirrors are fogged up (veh icles with outside rear view mirror
defoggers)
Turn on the mirror defoggers to defog the mirrors. ( P. 300)
CAUTION
■When driving the vehicle
Observe the following precautions while driving.
Failing to do so may result in loss of control of the vehicle and cause an acci-
dent, resulting in death or serious injury.
●Do not adjust the mirrors while driving.
● Do not drive with the mirrors folded back.
● Both the driver and passenger side mirrors must be extended and properly
adjusted before driving.
■ When the mirror defoggers are oper ating (vehicles with outside rear
view mirror defoggers)
Do not touch the rear view mirror surfaces, as they can become very hot and
burn you.

■ Operating the power windows afte r turning the hybrid system off
Vehicles without smart key system
The power windows can be operated for approximately 45 seconds after the
engine switch is turned to the “ACC” or “LOCK” position. They cannot, how-
ever, be operated once either front door is opened.
Vehicles with smart key system
The power windows can be operated for approximately 45 seconds even
after the “POWER” switch is turned to ACCESSORY mode or OFF. They
cannot, however, be operated once either front door is opened.
■ Jam protection function (driver’s window only)
If an object becomes caught between the window and the window frame,
window travel is stopped and the window is opened slightly.
■ When the power window does not close normally
If the jam protection function is operating abnormally and a window cannot
be closed, perform the following operations using the power window switch
on the driver’s door.
●Vehicles without smart key system: After stopping the vehicle, the win-
dow can be closed by holding the power window switch in the one-touch
closing position while the engine switch is turned to the “ON” position.
● Vehicles with smart key system: After stopping the vehicle, the window
can be closed by holding the power window switch in the one-touch clos-
ing position while the “POWER” switch is turned to ON mode.
● If the window still cannot be closed even by carrying out the operation
explained above, initialize the function by performing the following proce-
dure.
Hold the power window switch in the one-touch closing position.
Continue holding the switch for a further 6 seconds after the win-
dow has closed.

■ Operating the moon roof after turning the hybrid system off
Vehicles without smart key system
The moon roof can be operated for approximately 45 seconds after the
engine switch is turned to the “ACC” or “LOCK” position. It cannot, however,
be operated once either front door is opened.
Vehicles with smart key system
The moon roof can be operated for approximately 45 seconds even after the
“POWER” switch is turned to ACCESSORY mode or OFF. It cannot, how-
ever, be operated once either front door is opened.

■Jam protection function
If an object is detected between the moon roof and the frame while closing
or tilting down, travel is stopped and the moon roof opens slightly.
■ To reduce wind noise
Drive with the moon roof opened to slightly before the fully open position as
driving with the moon roof opened fully will cause wind noise.
■ Sunshade
The sunshade can be opened and closed manually. However, the sunshade
will open automatically when the moon roof is opened.
■ Moon roof open reminder function
Vehicles without smart key system
An alarm will sound when the driver’s door is opened with the moon roof not
fully closed and the engine switch OFF.
Vehicles with smart key system
An alarm will sound when the driver’s door is opened with the moon roof not
fully closed and the “POWER” switch OFF.

1-6. Refueling
Opening the fuel tank cap
The fuel tank of your vehicle has a special structure, which requires
a reduction in fuel tank pressure before refueling. After the opener
switch has been pressed, it will take several seconds until the vehi-
cle is ready for refueling.
■ Before refueling the vehicle
Vehicles without smart key system
Turn the engine switch OFF and ensure that all the doors and
windows are closed.
Vehicles with smart key system
Turn the “POWER” switch OFF and ensure that all the doors and
windows are closed.
■ Opening the fuel tank cap
Press the fuel filler door
opener switch.
When the message “REFUEL
READY” appears, the fuel filler
door will open.
