5-1. Essential Information
Introduction
Be extremely careful and prevent injury to yourself and others or dam-
age to your vehicle when using this manual for inspection and mainte-
nance.
If you are unsure about any procedure it describes, we strongly urge
you to have a reliable and qualified service shop perform the work,
preferably your Scion dealer.
Factory-trained Scion technicians and genuine Scion parts are best
for your vehicle. Without this ex pertise and the parts that have been
designed and made especially for your Scion, inadequate, incom-
plete, and insufficient servicing may result in problems. This could
lead to vehicle damage or an accident and injuries.
For expert advice and quality service, consult your Scion dealer.
To continue warranty eligibility and to protect your investment, it is
your responsibility to properly main tain your vehicle according to fac-
tory recommended schedul es outlined in this manual. Keep a copy of
the repair order. It proves that the maintenance that has been per-
formed is under warranty coverage. If any problem should arise while
your vehicle is under warranty, yo ur Scion dealer will promptly take
care of it.
This evidence may consist of the following:
● The Maintenance Log, found within the Warranty and Maintenance
Guide, must be completely filled out showing mileage, repair order
number, date for each service, and signed by a qualified automotive
service technician who service vehicles.
● Original copies of repair orders or other receipts that include the
mileage and date the vehicle was serviced. Each receipt should be
signed by a qualified automot ive service technician.
● For self maintenance, a statement that you completed the mainte-
nance yourself, displaying mileag e and the date the work was per-
formed. Also, receipts for the replacement parts (fluid, filters, etc.)

5517-7. Tire Information (U.S.A.)
7
Customer Information and Reporting Safety Defects
If a tire wears evenly, a wear indi-
cator will appear as a solid band
across the tread. Replace the tire
when this happens.
You should replace the tire before
the band crosses the entire tread.
Tires degrade over time, even when they are not being used on the road.
It is recommended that tires generally be replaced when they are 6 years
or older. Heat caused by hot climates or frequent high loading conditions
can accelerate the aging process. Yo u should replace the spare tire when
you replace the other road tires due to the aging of the spare tire. The
period in which the tire was manufactured (both week and year) is indi-
cated by a 4-digit number.
Refer to Tire Labeling on P. 541.
The way you drive has a great deal to do with your tire mileage and
safety. So cultivate good driving habits for your own benefit.
● Observe posted speed limits and drive at speeds that are safe for
the existing weather conditions
● Avoid fast starts, stops and turns
● Avoid potholes and objects on the road
● Do not run over curbs or hit the tire against the curb when parking
