ADJUSTING SEAT POSITION
Move the control switch to the desired direction. Releasing the switch will stop the move in
that position.
Do not place anything under the front
seats. It might interfere with the seat movement.

Move the control switch to the desired direction. Releasing the switch will stop the move in
that position.
CAUTION!
To reduce the risk of sliding under
the lap belt during a collision, avoid
reclining the seatback any more
than needed. The seat belts provide maximum protection when the driv-
er and the passenger are sitting up
straight and well back in the seats. If
you are reclined, the lap belt may
slide past your hips and apply re- straint forces directly to the abdo-
men. Therefore, in the event of a for- mal collision, the risk of personal in-
jury may increase with increasing re-
cline of the seatback. ADJUSTING SEAT CUSHION ANGLE

Turn the knob either way. To fold or remove the rear seats, operate
the seats as illustrated below. Reverse
the porcedure to return them. Be sure to
follow every indicated step exactly.
CAUTION!
Any operations should not be made while the vehicle is moving.
When fastening the holding strap
to secure the seat, adjust the strap
length so that the seat will not
swing back (1)
When retruning seats to their origi-
nal position: Make sure the seat belts are not twisted or caught under the seat and are arranged in their proper position for ready use. Make sure the seat is securely locked by pushing forward and
rearward on the top of the seatback
or by trying to pull up the edge of
the bottom cushion.
Folding up or removing the seats will en-
large the luggage compartment. See
Luggage stowage precautionsº in Part 2 for precautions to observe in loading lug- gage.

CAUTION!
Adjust the top of the head restraint
so that it is closest to the top of
your ears.
After adjusting the head restraint,
make sure it is locked in position.
Do not drive with the head re-
straints removed. Toyota strongly urges that the driver and passengers in the vehicle be properly re- strained at all times with the seat belts
provided. Failure to do so could increase
the chance of injury and/or the severity of the injury in accidents. Child.
Use the child restraint system ap-
propriate for the child until the child be-
comes large enough to properly wear the
vehicle's seat belts. See Child restraintº
for details.
If a child is too large for a child restraint
system, the child should sit in the rear seat
and must be restrained using the vehicle's
seat belt. According to accident statistics, the child is safer when properly restrained
in the rear seat than in the front seat.
If a child must sit in the front seat, the seat
belts should be worn properly. If an acci- dent occurs and the seat belts are not
worn properly, the force of the rapid infla-
tion of the airbag may cause serious injury
to the child.
Do not allow the child to stand up or kneel
on either rear or front seats. An unre-
strained child could suffer serious injury
during emergency braking or a collision.
Also do not let the child sit on your lap. It
does not provide sufficient restraint. If the shoulder belt falls across the child's neck or face, move the child to the center
position and use the center lap belt.
Pregnant woman.
Toyota recommends
the use of a seat belt. Ask your doctor for
specific recommendations. The lap belt
should be worn securely and as low as
possible over the hips and not on the waist.
Injured person. Toyota recommends the
use of a seat belt. Depending on the injury,
first check with your doctor for specificrecommendations.

If the seat belt cannot be pulled out of the
retractor,
firmly pull the belt and release it.
You will then be able to smoothly pull the
belt out of the retractor.
When a passenger's shoulder belt is com-
pletely extended and is then retracted
even slightly, the belt is locked in that posi-
tion and cannot be extended. This feature
is used to hold the child restraint system
securely. (For details, see Child restraintº
in this chapter.) To free the belt again, fully
retract the belt and then pull the belt out
once more.
CAUTION!
After inserting the tab, make sure
the tab and buckle are locked and that the belt is not twisted.
Do not insert coins, clips, etc. in
the buckle as this may prevent you
from properly latching the tab and buckle.
If the seat belt does not function
normally, immediately contact
your Toyota dealer. Do not use the
seat until the seat belt is fixed. It cannot protect an adult occupant
or your child from injury.
If your vehicle is equipped with an ad-
justable shoulder anchor, adjust its
position to your size.
To raise the anchor position, push the but-
ton of the anchor up. To lower the anchor position, pinch the lock release buttons
and slide the anchor down. After the ad-
justment, make sure the anchor is locked
in position.
CAUTION!
Always make sure the shoulder belt
is positioned across the center of
your shoulder. The belt should be
kept away from your neck, but not
falling off your shoulder. Failure to
do so could reduce the amount of
protection in an accident and cause severe injures in a collision.

CAUTION!
The SRS airbag system is designed
only as a supplement to the prima-
ry protection of the driver side
aseat belt systems. The driver is
particularly susceptible to death orserious injury if they does not wear
their seat belt; when sudden brak-
ing or a collision occurs, they may
be thrown forward. To obtain a
maximum protection in an acci-
dent, the driver and all passengers
in the vehicle should always wear
their seat belts when driving be- cause serious injuries can result to
unrestrained occupants. For in-
structions and precautions con-
cerning the seat belt system, see
Seat beltsº in this chapter.
A baby or small child who is too
small to use a seat belt should be
properly secured in a rear seat us- ing a child restraint system.
Never use a rear-facing child re-
straint system in the front seat be- cause the force of the rapid infla-
tion of the passenger airbag can cause severe injury to the child.
Vehicles with a passenger airbag
display a caution label on the pas-
senger side instrument panel as
shown above to remind you not to install a rear-facing child restraint
system on the front seat at any time.If you must use a forward-facing
child restraint system in the front seat, the seat must be moved as far
back as possible. For instructions
concerning the installation of a
child restratint system, see Child
restraintº in this chapter.

70(c) Using the 2º and Lº positions
The 2º and Lº positions are used for
strong engine braking as described pre-
viously. With the selector lever in 2º or Lº, you
can start the vehicle in motion as with the
lever in Dº. With the selector lever in 2º, the vehicle
will
start in the first gear and automatically
shift to the second gear.
With the selector lever in Lº, the trans-
mission is engaged in the first gear.
NOTICE
Be careful not to overrev the en- gine. Watch the tachometer to
keep engine rpm from going intothe red zone. The approximate
maximum allowable speed foreach position is given below for

Do not continue hill climbing orhard towing for a long time in the
2º or Lº position. This maycause severe automatic transmis-
sion damage from overheating.To prevent such damage, use Dº
position for hill climbing or hardtowing.
(d) Backing up
1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
2. With the brake pedal held down with
your foot, shift the selector lever to the
Rº position.
NOTICE
Never shift into reverse while the vehicle is moving.
(e) Parking
1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
2. Pull the parking brake lever up fully to securely apply the parking brake.
3. With the brake pedal pressed down, shift the selector lever to the Pº posi- tion. If the four-wheel drive control is in the Nº
position while the selector lever is in the
Pº position, the transmission will damage
and the wheels will not lock.
While the vehicle is moving, never
attempt to move the selector lever
into Pº position under any circum-
stances. Serious mechanical dam-
age and loss of vehicle control may result.
CAUTION
!
(f) Good driving practice If the transmission is repeatedly up-
shifted and downshifted between third
gear and overdrive when climbing a
gentle slope, the overdrive switch
should be turned off. Be sure to turn the switch on immediately afterward.
When towing a trailer, in order to main-
tain engine braking efficiency, do not use overdrive.

TREB (Treble)
This knob lets you adjust the treble level.
Push TREB/FADEº so that it pops out of
its retracted position. Turn the
knob to ad-
just the treble. Push the knob back into its
retracted position. TUNE
Tuning
Your Toyota has an electronic tuning radio
(ETR). Push and release the  ~º (up) or
 ! º (down) side of TUNEº to set up or
down the station band. (If you hear a
beep, you held the button too long and the
radio will go into the seek mode.) Seeking
In the seek mode, the radio finds and plays the next station up or down the sta- tion band.
To seek a station, push and hold the  ~º or
vº side of TUNEº until you hear a beep. Do this again to find another station. The anti-theft system prevents the audio
system f
rom working after it has been dis-
connected. To activate the system, you
must set a three-digit security code. After
the system is set, SECº will appear in the
display each time the ignition is turned
form LOCKº to ACCº or ONº. Also, the
anti-theft light flashes every few seconds
while the ignition key is in the LOCKºposition.
You will need to know your security code
to reactivate your radio after electrical ser-vice is performed on your vehicle.
Choose a security code that is easy to re-
member and keep a copy of it (not in your
Toyota).
NOTICE
If you pushed any wrong buttons on the anti-theft system, the following
messages will appear on the dis-play.
ErrºÐYou have pushed wrongbuttons.
1-9ºÐIndicates the number of er-rors you have made. You may make
up to nine errors, but no more!
HELPºÐThe number of errors you can make was exceeded. The
audio system is completely inoper-
able. Contact you Toyota dealer.

Setting a security code for the first time.
1. Turn off the audio system.
Turn the iginition key to ACCº.Simultaneously push and hold in 1º, 6º,
and PWR/VOLº until SECº appears on
the display.2. While you are holding in the  ~º side of
TUNEº, push 1º.
The display will read Ð.
On some modes,  º and  º will also
turn on.3. Input the three digit code.
You have 10 seconds to enter each digit. For example, 209º:
To set the first digit: Push 1º until the digit
you want appears on the display.
To set the second digit: Push 2º until the
digit you want appears on the display.
To set the third digit: Push 3º until the digit
you want appears on the display.
