Breaking in your new Toyota
To extend the life of the vehicle, observing the following prec autions is recom-
mended:
● For the first 200 miles (300 km):
Avoid sudden stops.
● For the first 1000 miles (1600 km):
• Do not drive at extremely high speeds.
• Avoid sudden acceleration.
• Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.
■ Drum-in-disc type parking brake system
Your vehicle has a drum-in-disc type parking brake system. This type of brake
system needs bedding-down of the brake shoes periodically or wh enever the
parking brake shoes and/or drum are replaced. Have your Toyota dealer per-
form the bedding down operation.
■ Operating your vehicle in a foreign country
Comply with the relevant vehicle registration laws and confirm the availability
of the correct fuel. ( P. 418)

Opening the fuel door
●Close the all the doors and windows.
● Set the parking brake.
● Shift the shift position to P.
● Turn the power switch off.
● Turn off the headlights.

■ Notes on fueling
●Fueling will not be possible if the pressure inside the vehicle ’s hydrogen tanks
is higher than the supply pressure of the hydrogen station. If the hydrogen
tanks are more than half full, the vehicle will be unable to fu el at a H35 dis-
penser.
A hydrogen station with a H70 dispenser (supply pressure of 101 50 psi
[70 MPa, 714 kgf/cm
2, 700 bar] is necessary to completely fill hydrogen tanks.
● If the fueling cannot be completed due to trouble with the station equipment,
call the number indicated on the equipment.
● Fuel with compressed hydrogen g as only at hydrogen stations.
● Fuel at hydrogen stations confor ming with the Society of Automo-
tive Engineers (SAE) J2601 fueling protocol or laws that may
supersede such SAE protocols.
● Refer to the Mirai Station Finder Application in Entune,
www.toyota.com
, or call 800-331-4331.
● Observe any notic es or instructions show n at hydrogen stations.
● The filling time and amount of fuel may depend on outside tem-
perature and the equipment at that hydrogen station.

Vehicles with expired hydrogen tanks must not be used. (P. 86)

When trouble arises
The following may indicate a problem with your transmission. Contact
your Toyota dealer or commercial towing service before towing.
● The fuel cell system warning message shows on the multi-informa -
tion display and the vehicle does not move.
● The vehicle makes an abnormal sound.
Do not tow with a sling-type truck
to prevent body damage.

If the fuel cell system will not start
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
● The electronic key may not be functioning properly. (P. 398)
● There may not be sufficient f uel in the vehicle’s tank.
Refuel the vehicle.
● The fuel door may be open. ( P. 2 0 1 )
● There may be a mal function in the immobilizer system.
(  P. 72)
● There may be a malfunction i n the shift control system.
* ( P. 378)
● The fuel cell system may be malf unctioning due to an electrical
problem such as electronic key battery depletion or a blown fus e.
However, depending on the type of malfunction, an interim mea-
sure is available to star t the fuel cell system. (P. 177, 397)
● The electronic key may be in battery-saving mode. ( P. 133)
*: It may not be possible to shift the shift position from P to a nother position.
One of the following may be the cause of the problem:
● The 12-volt battery may be discharged. ( P. 401)
● The 12-volt battery terminal conn ections may be loose or corroded.
(  P. 328)
Reasons for the fuel cell system not starting vary depending on
the situation. Check the followi ng and perform the appropriate
procedure:
The fuel cell system will not start even though the correct sta rt-
ing procedure is being followed. ( P. 172)
The interior lights and headlights are dim, or the horn does no t
sound or sounds at a low volume.

When the 12-volt battery is reconnected, start the fuel cell sy stem, depress
the brake pedal, and confirm that it is possible to shift into each shift posi-
tion.
● If the battery is removed or the terminals disconnected without operating the
water release function during cold weather, the vehicle may not start due to
the fuel cell system being frozen. To prevent this, operate the water release
function before removing the battery or disconnecting the termi nals.

■ When exchanging the 12-volt battery
Use a Central Degassing type 12-volt battery (Japanese Industri al Stan-
dards). Also, use 12-volt batteries with case sizes similar to one prior the
exchange and an equivalent 20 hour rate capacity (20HR) or grea ter.
• If the sizes differ, the 12-volt battery cannot be properly se cured.
• If the 20 hour rate capacity is low, even if the time period w here the vehicle
is not used is a short time, the 12-volt battery may discharge and fuel cell
system may not be able to start.
For details, consult your Toyota dealer.
WARNING
■ Avoiding 12-volt batte ry fires or explosions
Observe the following precautions to prevent accidentally ignit ing the flam-
mable gas that may be emitted from the 12-volt battery:
● Make sure each jumper cable is connected to the correct terminal and that
it is not unintentionally in contact with any other than the in tended terminal.
● Do not allow the other end of the jumper cable connected to the “+” termi-
nal to come into contact with any other parts or metal surfaces in the area,
such as brackets or unpainted metal.
● Do not allow the + and - clamps of the jumper cables to come in to contact
with each other.
● Do not smoke, use matches, cigarette lighters or allow open fla me near
the 12-volt battery.

When trouble arises
■If the high coolant temperature warning light comes on or
flashes
Stop the vehicle in a safe place and turn off the air conditioning sys-
tem, and then stop t he fuel cell system.
If you see steam or coolant leaks:
Carefully lift the hood after the steam subsides.
If you do not see steam or coolant leaks:
Carefully lift the hood.
After the fuel cell system has
cooled down sufficiently,
inspect the hoses and radiator
core (radiator) for any leaks.

The fuel cell stack coolant is exclusive for
fuel cell stack usage. Damage may occur

non-silicate, non-amine, non-nitrite, and
non-borate coolant with long-life hybrid
