⚫Avoid revving or racing the engine.
Running the engine at high speed while the vehicle is stopped may cause
the exhaust system to overheat, which could result in a fire if combustible
material is nearby.
⬛When parking the vehicle
⚫Do not leave glasses, cigarette lighters, aerosol cans, or carbonated bever-
age cans in the vehicle under the scorching sun.
Doing so may result in the following:
⦁ Gas may leak from a cigarette lighter or aerosol can, and may lead to a fire
⦁ The glasses with plastic lenses and plastic material may deform or crack
⦁ Carbonated beverage cans may fracture, causing the contents to spill over
the interior of the vehicle, and may al so cause a short circuit in the vehi-
cle’s electrical components
⚫Do not leave cigarette lighters in the vehi cle. If a cigarette lighter is in a stor-
age compartment or on the floor, it ma y be lit accidentally when luggage is
loaded or the seat is adjusted, causing a fire.
⚫Do not attach adhesive discs to the windshield or windows. Do not place
containers such as fragrance on the instrument panel or dashboard.
Adhesive discs or containers may act as lenses, causing a fire in the vehicle.
⚫Do not leave a door or window open if the curved glass is coated with a
metallized film such as a silver-colored one.
Reflected sunlight may cause the glass to act as a lens, causing a fire.
⚫For continuously variable transmission vehicles, always apply the parking
brake, set the shift lever to P, stop the engine, and lock the vehicle when
leaving the vehicle unattended.
Do not leave the vehicle unattende d while the engine is running.
If the vehicle is parked wi th the shift lever in P but the parking brake is not
set, the vehicle may start to move, possibly leading to an accident.
⚫Do not touch the exhaust pipes while th e engine is running or immediately
after turning the engine off.
Doing so may cause burns.
⬛When taking a nap in the vehicle
Always turn the engine off.
Otherwise, if you accidentally move the shift lever or depress the accelerator
pedal, this could cause an accident or fire due to engine overheating. Addition-
ally, if the vehicle is parked in a poorly ventilated area, exhaust gases may enter
the vehicle, leading to death or a serious health hazard.

NOTICE
⬛Driving (continuously variable transmission vehicles)
⚫Do not depress the accelerator and brake pedals at the same time during
driving.
Depressing the accelerator and brake pedals at the same time may restrain
the engine output.
⚫Do not use the accelerator pedal or depress the accelerator and brake ped-
als at the same time to hold the vehicle on a hill.
⬛Driving (Manual transmission vehicles)
⚫Do not depress the accelerator and brake pedals at the same time during
driving. Depressing the accelerator and brake pedals at the same time may
restrain the engine output.
⚫Do not move the shift lever without st epping on the clutch pedal all the way.
Doing so could damage the clutch or transmission.
⚫To prevent the clutch from being da maged, observe the following precau-
tions.
⦁ Do not drive with your foot placed on the clutch pedal
⦁ Avoid starting to move the vehicle when the shift lever is set to other than
the gear 1
⦁ Do not ride the clutch more than ne cessary especially when starting to
move the vehicle on a hill
⚫Do not set the shift lever to R while the vehicle is still moving. Doing so could
damage the clutch, transmission, or the gear.
⬛Parking (continuously variable transmission vehicles)
Always apply the parking brake, and set th e shift lever to P. If the parking brake
is not applied and the shift lever is no t set to P, it may cause the vehicle to
move or the vehicle may accelerate sudd enly if the accelerator pedal is acci-
dentally depressed.
⬛Avoiding damage to vehicle parts
⚫Do not turn the steering wheel fully in either direction and hold it there for
an extended period of ti me. Doing so may damage the electric power steer-
ing motor.
⚫When driving over bumps in the road, drive as slowly as possible to avoid
damaging the disc wheels, etc.

Procedure to start the engine
▶Continuously variable transmission vehicles
a Adjust the position of the seat to give the correct driving posture
(➞ P. 30), and check the position of each pedal
b Check that the parking brake is applied
c Check that the shift lever is set in P
d Firmly depress the brake pedal
e Turn the engine switch to “START”
The starter rotates for up to 30 seconds until the engine starts.
▶Manual transmission vehicles

Changing the engine switch position
a“OFF” (“LOCK” position)
The key can be removed and inserted.
(For continuously variable transmission
vehicles, the key can be inserted and
removed when the shift lever is set in
P)
The steering wheel will be locked.
The emergency flashers can be used.
b“ACC” (“ACC” position)
You can use electrical components,
such as a power outlet.
c“ON” (“ON” position)
All electrical components can be used.
d“START” (“START” position)
The engine can be started.
⬛Turning the key from “ACC” to “OFF” (“LOCK”)
a Verify that the shift lever is set to P (continuously variable transmission
vehicles) or N (manual transmission vehicles)
b Push in the key and turn it to “OFF”
(“LOCK”)
⬛When the engine will not start
The engine immobilizer system may not have been deactivated. ( ➞P. 7 2 )

Engine (ignition) switch

You can start the engine or change the engine switch mode by per-
forming the following operations when you have the electronic key
with you.Procedure to start the engine

Without the light being lit in green, the
engine will not start.

If you push it firmly and briefly, you do
not need to press and hold.
The starter rotates for up to 30 sec-
onds until the engine starts.
Continuously variable transmission vehi-
cles: Keep stepping on the brake pedal
until the engine has started running.
Manual transmission vehicles: Keep
stepping on the clutch pedal and brake
pedal until the engine has started run-
ning.
The engine can start in any mode
(➞ P. 185) of the engine switch.

Stopping the engine
aStop the vehicle completely
b Continuously variable transmission vehicles: Apply the parking brake
( ➞ P. 197) and set the shift lever in P
Manual transmission vehicles: Apply the parking brake ( ➞P. 197) and
set the shift lever in N
c Press the engine switch
d Release your foot from the brake pedal, and make sure that the engine
switch indicator light is off
Changing the engine switch mode
You can switch the modes by pushing the engine switch without stepping
on the brake pedal (continuously vari able transmission vehicles) or the
clutch pedal (manual transmission ve hicles). (Each time the switch is
pressed, the mode changes)
“OFF”*
The emergency flashers can be used.
“ACC”
You can use electrical components, such
as a power outlet.
The indicator of the engine switch will
flash in green at a slow pace.
“ON”
All electrical components can be used.

Stopping the engine with the shift lever placed in other than P
(continuously variable transmission vehicles)
When the engine was stopped with the shift lever placed in other than P,
the engine stops, but the engine switch mode will not turn “OFF”. Use the
following procedures to turn off the engine.
aCheck that the parking brake is applied
b Set the shift lever to P
c After you verify that the engine switch indicator is slowly flashing in
green, press the engine switch twice
d Make sure that the engine switch indicator light is off
⬛Auto power-off function
▶Continuously variable transmission vehicles
If you leave the engine switch “ON” (the engine is not running) for 20 minutes
or longer or leave it as “ACC” for 1 hour or longer with the shift lever placed in
P, the engine switch automatically turns “OFF”.
Note that the auto power-off function is not designed to prevent the battery
from dying all the time. When the engi ne is not running, do not leave the
engine switch to “ACC” or “ON” for a long time.
▶Manual transmission vehicles
If you leave the engine switch “ON” (the engine is not running) for 20 minutes
or longer, or if you leave it as “ACC” for 1 hour or longer, the engine switch
automatically turns “OFF”.
Note that the auto power-off function is not designed to prevent the battery
from dying all the time. When the engi ne is not running, do not leave the
engine switch to “ACC” or “ON” for a long time.

⬛Steering wheel lock
⚫Opening or closing one of the doors (except for opening the back door) after
turning the engine switch “OFF” will lock the steering wheel. Operating the
engine switch will automatically unlock the steering wheel.
⚫If the vehicle’s battery is dead, the st eering wheel lock will not be activated.
⬛When unable to unlock the steering wheel
The indicator of the engine switch will
continue to flash in green at a fast
pace.
Once you have verified that the shift le ver is set to P (continuously variable
transmission vehicles), try operating the engine switch while rotating the steer-
ing wheel in a clockwise and counterclockwise direction.
⬛Overheat protection of the steering wheel lock motor
If you repeat the engine start and stop operation in a short period, the opera-
tion may be restricted to prevent th e motor from being overheated. If that
happens, stop the operation. The system will return to normal in about 10 sec-
onds.
⬛The indicator of the engine switch lights up or flashes in yellow
It may indicate a malfunction in the systems. Have the vehicle inspected at
your Toyota dealer immediately.
⬛When the electronic key runs out of battery

⬛Engine switch operation
⚫If the switch was not pushed firmly or the switch was pushed quickly several
times, the mode may not switch or the engine may not start.
⚫If you start the engine again right afte r turning “OFF” the engine switch, the
engine may not start. If you want to start the engine again after turning
“OFF” the engine switch, wait for a few seconds.
⬛When the key-free system was deactivated by customization

WARNING
⬛When starting the engine
Always start the engine while sitting in the driver’s seat. Do not depress the
accelerator pedal while starting th e engine under any circumstances.
Doing so may cause an unforeseen accident re sulting in death or serious injury.
⬛Caution while driving
If the vehicle starts sliding when the engine stops, do not open, lock or unlock
the doors until the vehicle stops safely . Doing so may activate the steering wheel
lock and lead to an unforeseen accident, resulting in serious injury or death.
⬛Stopping the engine in an emergency
If you want to stop the engine in an em ergency while driving the vehicle, press
and hold the engine switch for more than 3 seconds, or press it briefly 3 times
or more in succession. ( ➞P. 367)
However, do not touch the engine switch while driving except in an emer-
gency. Turning the engine off while driving will not cause loss of steering or
braking control, but the power assist to these systems will be lost. This will
make it more difficult to steer and brake, so you should pull over and stop the
vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so.
NOTICE
⬛To prevent battery discharge
⚫Do not leave the engine switch “ACC” or “ON” for long peri ods of time with-
out the engine running.
⚫When the engine switch indi cator is not turned off, the engine switch is not
“OFF”. Before you leave the vehicle, turn “OFF” the engine switch.
⚫For the continuously variable transmission vehicles, do not stop the engine
with the shift lever placed in other t han P. When you stop the engine with
the shift lever placed in other than P and leave it as is, it could cause the bat-
tery to die since the engine switch will be set to “ACC”.
⬛When starting the engine
⚫Do not race a cold engine.
⚫If you have trouble starting the engine or experience frequent stalling, have
the vehicle inspected at your Toyota dealer immediately.
⬛Engine switch operation
If you experience unusual symptoms such as the switch being stuck when
pushing the engine switch, the switch may be broken. Contact your Toyota
dealer immediately.
