⬛When the TRC/VSC systems are turned off
Be especially careful and drive at a speed appropriate to the road conditions.
As these are the systems to help ensure vehicle stability and driving force, do
not turn the TRC/VSC systems off unless necessary.
⬛Replacing tires
Make sure that all tires are of the spec ified size, brand, tread pattern and total
load capacity. In addition, make sure th at the tires are inflated to the recom-
mended tire inflation pressure level.
The ABS, TRC and VSC systems will not func tion correctly if different tires are
installed on the vehicle.
Contact your Toyota dealer for further information when replacing tires or
wheels.
⬛Handling of tires and the suspension
Using tires with any kind of problem or modifying the suspension will affect the
driving assist systems, and may cause a system to malfunction.

4-6. Driving tips
Winter driving tips
Carry out the necessary preparations and inspections before driving
the vehicle in winter. Always drive the vehicle in a manner appropri-
ate to the prevailing weather conditions.Preparation for winter
⚫Use fluids that are appropriate to the prevailing outside temperatures.
⦁ Engine oil
⦁ Coolant
⦁ Washer fluid
⚫Have a service technician inspec t the condition of the battery.
Before driving
Perform the following according to the driving conditions:
⚫Do not try to forcibly open a window or move a windshield wiper that is
frozen. Pour warm water over the frozen area to melt the ice. Wipe away
the water immediately to prevent it from freezing.
⚫To ensure proper operation of the air conditioning system fan, remove
any snow that has accumulated on the air inlet vents in front of the
windshield.
⚫Check for and remove any excess ice or snow that may have accumu-
lated on the exterior lights, vehicle’s roof, around the tires or on the
brakes.
⚫Look under the vehicle and check that there are no ice blocks around
the ground. Remove any attached ice blocks with great care to avoid
damaging vehicle components. Also check that the pedals and steering
wheel move smoothly.
⚫Remove any snow or mud from the bottom of your shoes before getting
in the vehicle.

WARNING
⬛When the brakes freeze
If normal braking is not restored, have the vehicle inspected at your Toyota
dealer immediately.
⬛Caution when parking
When parking without applying the parking brake, be sure to use wheel
chocks. Failure to do so may be dangerous because it may cause the vehicle to
move unexpectedly, possibly leading to an unforeseen accident.
NOTICE
⬛When removing ice from the windshield and windows
Do not hit and break the ice.
The glass may crack.
⬛When the doors, windshield wipers, windshield, or windows freeze
⚫Thaw the ice by applying lukewarm water.
Hot water may damage or deform components.
⚫If the windshield wipers, outside rear view mirrors, or windows are forcibly
activated while frozen or when snow is strongly attached, the wiper rubber
may be damaged or the motor may break.
⬛Repairing or replacing snow tires (veh icles with the tire pressure warning
system)
Request repairs or replacement of snow tires from Toyota dealers or legiti-
mate tire retailers.
This is because the removal and attachment of snow tires affects the operation
of the tire pressure warning valves and transmitters.
⬛Fitting tire chains (vehicles with the tire pressure warning system)
The tire pressure warning valves and transmitters may not function correctly
when tire chains are fitted.

2424-6. Driving tips
RAIZE_OM_General_BZ358E
◆Performing idling stops
⚫Avoid unnecessary idling. Stop the engine when parking the vehicle to
reduce excessive fuel consumption, even it is only for a short period of
time.
⚫Except in severe environment, such as when the outside temperature is
extremely low, warming up the engine before driving is unnecessary.
Rather than idling, it is more efficient to drive the vehicle gently to warm
up each part while avoiding increasing the engine revolutions unneces-
sarily and accelerating or decelerating suddenly.
◆Luggage
Carrying heavy luggage will lead to poor fuel economy. Avoid carrying
unnecessary luggage. Installing a large roof rack will also cause poor fuel
economy.
◆Regular maintenance
⚫Make sure to check the tire inflation pressure frequently. Improper tire
inflation pressure can cause poor fu el economy. Also, as snow tires can
cause large amounts of friction, thei r use on dry roads can lead to poor
fuel economy. Use tires that are appropriate for the season and road
conditions.
⚫Use oil and fluid of the recommended quality, which affect fuel con-
sumption and the life of the vehicle. Also, check oil and fluid periodically.

Do-it-yourself maintenance
⚫What about do-it-yourself maintenance?
Many of the maintenance items are easy to do yourself if you have a little mechanical
ability and a few basic automotive tools. Simple instructions for how to perform them
are presented in this section.
Note, however, that some maintenance task s require special tools and skills. These
are best performed by qualified technician s. Even if you are an experienced do-it-
yourself mechanic, we recommend that repairs and maintenance be conducted by
your Toyota dealer who will keep a record of maintenance on your vehicle. This
record could be helpful should you ever require Warranty Service.
⬛Does your vehicle need repairs?
Be on the alert for changes in performance and sounds, and visual tip-offs that
indicate service is needed. Some important clues are:
⚫Engine misses, stumbling or pinging
⚫Appreciable loss of power
⚫Strange engine noises
⚫A fluid leak under the vehicle (However , water dripping from the air condi-
tioning system after use is normal.)
⚫Change in exhaust sound (This may indica te a dangerous carbon monoxide leak.
Drive with the windows open and have th e exhaust system checked immediately.)
⚫Flat-looking tires, excessive tire squeal when cornering, uneven tire wear
⚫Vehicle pulls to one side when driven straight on a level road
⚫Strange noises related to suspension movement
⚫Loss of brake effectiveness, spongy feeling brake pedal or clutch pedal (vehi-
cles with a manual transmission), pe dal almost touches the floor, vehicle
pulls to one side when braking
⚫Engine coolant temperature continually higher than normal
If you notice any of these clues, take yo ur vehicle to your Toyota dealer as soon
as possible. Your vehicle may need adjustment or repair.
WARNING
⬛If your vehicle is not properly maintained
Improper maintenance could result in serious damage to the vehicle and pos-
sible death or serious injury.
⬛Handling of the battery
Battery posts, terminals and related accessories contain lead and lead com-
pounds which are known to cause brain damage. Wash your hands after han-
dling. ( ➞P. 321)

Replace or rotate tires in accordance with maintenance schedules
and treadwear.Checking tires
Check if the treadwear indicators are showing on the tires. Also check the
tires for uneven wear, such as excessi ve wear on one side of the tread.
Check the spare tire condition and pressure if not rotated.

b Worn tread
c Treadwear indicator
The location of treadwear indicators is shown by a “TWI” or “ △” mark, etc., molded
into the sidewall of each tire.

Tire rotation
Rotate the tires in the order shown.
To equalize tire wear and help exte nd tire life, Toyota recommends that
tire rotation is carried out appr oximately every 5000 km (3000 miles).

Tire pressure warning system✽
Your vehicle is equipped with a tire pressure warning system that uses tire
pressure warning valves and transmitters to detect low tire inflation pres-
sure before serious problems arise.
If the tire pressure drops below a predetermined level, the driver is
warned by a warning light. (➞P. 382)
Installing tire pressure warning valves and transmitters
(vehicles with a tire pressure warning system)
When replacing tires or wheels, tire pressure warning valves and transmit-
ters must also be installed.
When new tire pressure warning valv es and transmitters are installed,
new ID codes must be registered in the tire pressure warning computer
and the tire pressure warning system must be initialized. Have tire pres-
sure warning valve and transmitter ID codes registered by your Toyota
dealer. ( ➞P. 329)
