Operating the switch

WARNING
■Caution regarding the use of
windshield wipers in “AUTO”
mode (vehicles with rain-
sensing windshield wipers)
The windshield wipers may oper-
ate unexpectedly if the sensor is
touched or the windshield is sub-
ject to vibration in “AUTO” mode.
Take care that y our fingers or
anything else does not become
caught in the windshield wipers.
■Caution regarding the use of
washer fluid
When it is cold, do not use the
washer fluid until the windshield
becomes warm. The fluid may
freeze on the windshield and
cause low visibility. This may lead
to an accident, resulting in death
or serious injury.
NOTICE
■When the washer fluid tank is
empty
Do not operate the switch continu-
ally as the washer fluid pump may
overheat.
■When a nozzle becomes
blocked
In this case, conta ct your Toyota
dealer.
Do not try to clear it with a pin or
other object. The nozzle will be
damaged.
■To prevent battery discharge
Do not leave the wipers on longer
than necessary when the engine
is off.
Rear window wiper
and washer
The rear window wiper and
washer can be used by
operating the lever.
NOTICE
■When the rear window is dry
Do not use the wiper, as it may
damage the rear window.

Pushing the lever operates the
wiper and washer.
The wiper will automatically operate
a couple of times after the washer
squirts.
■The rear window wiper and
washer can be operated when
The engine switch is in ON.
■If no washer fluid sprays
Check that the washer nozzle is not
blocked if there is washer fluid in the
washer fluid reservoir.
■Back door opening linked rear
window wiper stop function
When the rear w indow wiper is
operating, if the back door is opened
while the vehicle is stopped, opera-
tion of the rear window wiper will be
stopped to prevent anyone near the
vehicle from being sprayed by water
from the wiper. When the back door
is closed, wiper operation will
resume.

■Reverse-linked rear window
wiper function
When the shift lever is shifted to R
when the front wipers are operating,
the rear window wiper will operate
once.

Setting of the reverse-linked func-
tion can be changed. (Customizable

NOTICE
■When the washer fluid tank is
empty

Driving
• If the wheels are misaligned
• If a wiper blade is blocking the front camera
• The vehicle is being driven at extremely high speeds
• When driving on a hill
• If the radar sensor or front camera
is misaligned
• When driving in a traffic lane sep-
arated by more t han one lane
where oncoming vehicles are driv-
ing while making a right/left turn
• When largely out of place with the opposite facing targeted oncom-
ing vehicle during a right/left turn
• While making a right/left turn, when a pedestrian approaches
from behind or side of your vehicle
●In addition to the above, in some
situations, such as the following,
the emergency steering assist
may not operate.
• When the white (yellow) lane lines are difficult to see, such as when
they are faint, di verging/merging,
or a shadow is cast upon them • When the lane is wider or nar-
rower than normal
• When there is a light and dark pat-
tern on the road surface, such as
due to road repairs
• When a pedestrian is detected
near the centerline of the vehicle
• When the target is too close
• When there is insufficient safe or unobstructed space for the vehicle
to be steered into
• If oncoming vehicle is present
• If VSC function is operating
●In some situations such as the fol-
lowing, sufficient braking force or
steering force may not be
obtained, preventing the system
from performing properly:
• If the braking functions cannot operate to their full extent, such as
when the brake parts are
extremely cold, ext remely hot, or
wet
• If the vehicle is not properly main- tained (brakes or tires are exces-
sively worn, imprope r tire inflation
pressure, etc.)
• When the vehicle is being driven on a gravel road or other slippery
surface
• When the road surface has deep wheel tracks
• When driving on a hill road
• When driving on a road that has inclines to the left or right
■If VSC is disabled
●If VSC is disabled ( P.320), the
pre-collision brak e assist and pre-
collision braking functions are also
disabled.
●The PCS warning light will turn on
and “VSC Turned Off Pre-Colli-
sion Brake System Unavailable”
will be displayed on the multi-
information display.

■ABS (Anti-lock Brake Sys-
tem)
Helps to prevent wheel lock
when the brakes are applied
suddenly, or if the brakes are
applied while driving on a slip-
pery road surface
■Brake assist
Generates an increased level of
braking force after the brake
pedal is depressed when the
system detects a panic stop sit-
uation
■VSC (Vehicle Stability Con-
trol)
Helps the driver to control skid-
ding when swerving suddenly or
turning on slippery road sur-
faces.
WARNING
■The system may not operate
on the following surfaces,
which may lead to an acci-
dent causing death or serious
injury
●Slippery surfaces such as wet
or muddy roads
●Icy surface
●Unpaved roads
Driving assist systems
To keep driving safety and
performance, the following
systems operate automati-
cally in response to various
driving situations. Be
aware, however, that these
systems are supplementary
and should not be relied
upon too heavily when oper-
ating the vehicle.
Summary of the driving
assist systems

Perform the following according
to the driving conditions:
Do not try to forcibly open a
window or move a wiper that
is frozen. Pour warm water
over the frozen area to melt
the ice. Wipe away the water
immediately to prevent it from
freezing.
 To ensure proper operation of
the climate control system
fan, remove any snow that
has accumulated on the air
inlet vents in front of the wind-
shield.
 Check for and remove any
excess ice or snow that may
have accumulated on the
exterior lights, outside rear
view mirrors, windows, vehi-
cle’s roof, chassis, around the
tires or on the brakes.
 Remove any snow or mud
from the bottom of your shoes
before getting in the vehicle.
Accelerate the vehicle slowly,
keep a safe distance between
you and the vehicle ahead, and
drive at a reduced speed suit-
able to road conditions.
 Turn automatic mode of the parking brake off. Otherwise,
the parking brake may freeze
and not be able to be
released automatically.
Also, avoid using the following as
the parking brake may operate
automatically, even if automatic
mode is off.
• Brake hold system

Park the vehicle and shift the
shift lever to P without setting
the parking brake. The park-
ing brake may freeze up, pre-
venting it from being released.
If the vehicle is parked without
setting the parking brake,
make sure to block the
wheels. Failure to do so may
be dangerous because it may
cause the vehicle to move
unexpectedly, possibly lead-
ing to an accident.
 When the parking brake is in
automatic mode, release the
parking brake after shifting
the shift lever to P. ( P.215)
 If the vehicle is parked without
setting the parking brake,
confirm that the shift lever
cannot be moved out of P.
 If the vehicle is left parked
with the brakes damp in cold
temperatures, there is a pos-
sibility of the brakes freezing.

WARNING
●When driving off-road or in rug-
ged terrain, do not drive at
excessive speeds, jump, make
sharp turns, strike objects, etc.
This may cause loss of control
or vehicle rollover causing
death or serious injury. You are
also risking expensive damage
to your vehicle’s suspension
and chassis.
NOTICE
■To prevent the water damage
Take all necessary safety mea-
sures to ensure that water dam-
age to the engine or other
components does not occur.
●Water entering the engine air
intake will cause severe engine
damage.
●Water entering the automatic
transmission will cause deterio-
ration in shift quality, locking up
of your transmission accompa-
nied by vibration, and ultimately
damage.
●Water can wash the grease
from wheel bearings, causing
rusting and premature failure,
and may also enter the differen-
tials, transmission and transfer
case (AWD models), reducing
the gear oil’s lub ricating quali-
ties.
■When you drive through
water
If driving through water, such as
when crossing shallow streams,
first check the depth of the water
and the bottom of the riverbed for
firmness. Drive slowly and avoid
deep water.
■Inspection after off-road driv-
ing
●Sand and mud that has accu-
mulated around brake discs
may affect braking efficiency
and may damage brake system
components.
●Always perform a maintenance
inspection after each day of off-
road driving that has taken you
through rough terrain, sand,
mud, or water. For scheduled
maintenance information, refer
to the “Scheduled Maintenance
Guide” or “Owner’s Manual
Supplement”.

■Adjusting the temperature
setting
To adjust the temperature set-
ting, turn the temperature con-
trol switch clockwise (warm) or
counterclockwise (cool).
If “A/C” switch is not pressed, the
system will blow a mbient tempera-
ture air or heated air.
■Fan speed setting
To adjust the fan speed, turn the fan speed control switch clock-
wise (increase) or counterclock-
wise (decrease).
Pressing the on/off switch turns off
the fan.
When the fan is off, pressing the
on/off switch or turning the fan
speed control switch will turn on the
fan.
■Change the airflow mode

the Stop & Start system operations,
the air conditioning cooling, heating
and dehumidification functions turn
off and only ambient temperature air
is blown, and there is a possibility
that the blowing of ambient tem-
perature air will stop. To prevent the
air conditioning system from turning
off, press the Stop & Start cancel
switch to deactivate the system.
■When the windshield is fogged
up and the engine is stopped
due to the Stop & Start system
(vehicles with Stop & Start sys-
tem)
Press the windshield defogger
switch to restart the engine and
defog the windshield.
If the windshield continuously fogs
up, press the Stop & Start cancel
switch and refrain from using the
Stop & Start system.
■When an odor c omes from the
air conditioning system while
the engine is stopped due to the
Stop & Start system (vehicles
with Stop & Start system)
Press the Stop & Start cancel switch
to restart the engine.
■Air conditioning filter
