MAINTENANCE

If you tow a trailer, your vehicle will
require more frequent maintenance due
to the additional load. For this informa-
tion, please refer to the scheduled
maintenance information in the ªSched-
uled Maintenance Guideº or ªOwner 's
Manual Supplementº.

Retighten all fixing bolts of the towing
ball and bracket after approximately
1000 km (600 miles) of trailer driving.
CONNECTING A TRAILER (models with
rear height control air suspension)
Stop your vehicle and a trailer in line and
perform the following:
1. Set the vehicle height to ªNº (normal)
in automatic control mode. Turn the
ignition switch off or select manual
control mode by pushing the mode se-
lect switch to turn off the automatic
leveling function.
2. Connect a trailer.
3. Turn the ignition switch on or select
automatic control mode by pushing the
mode select switch to turn on the auto-
matic leveling function.DISCONNECTING A TRAILER (models
with rear height control air suspension)
Stop your vehicle and a trailer in line and
perform the following:
1. Set the vehicle height to ªLOº in auto-
matic control mode. (Make sure the
ªLOº indicator comes on.)
2. Turn the ignition switch off or select
manual control mode by pushing the
mode select switch to turn off the auto-
matic leveling function.
3. Set the supporting leg of a trailer on
the ground and raise the hitch by 100
mm (4 in.).
4. Turn the ignition switch on or select
automatic control mode by pushing the
mode select switch to turn on the auto-
matic leveling function.
5. Wait for about 20 seconds until the
rear vehicle height is lowered by the
automatic leveling function.
6. Make sure the hitch is disconnected. If
not, raise the hitch higher and repeat
steps 2 through 5.
7. Move the vehicle forward in ªLOº mode
where the hitch does not touch any-
thing in ªNº mode.
8. Set the vehicle height to ªNº in auto-
matic control mode.PRE±TOWING SAFETY CHECK

Check that your vehicle remains level
when a loaded or unloaded trailer is
hitched. Do not drive if the vehicle has
an abnormal nose±up or nose±down
condition, and check for improper
tongue load, overload, worn suspension
or other possible causes.

Make sure the trailer cargo is securely
loaded so that it cannot shift.

Check that your rear view mirrors con-
form to any applicable federal, state/
provincial or local regulations. If not,
install the rear view mirrors required
for towing purpose.

Make sure to set the jack prop-
erly in the jack point. Raising
the vehicle with jack improper-
ly positioned will damage the
vehicle or may allow the ve-
hicle to fall off the jack and
cause personal injury.

Never get under the vehicle
when the vehicle is supported
by the jack alone.

Use the jack only for lifting
your vehicle during wheel
changing.

Do not raise the vehicle with
someone in the vehicle.

When raising the vehicle, do
not place any objects on top
of or underneath the jack.

Raise the vehicle only high
enough to remove and change
the tire.NOTICE

Do not continue driving with
a deflated tire. Driving even a
short distance can damage a
tire and wheel beyond repair.

Vehicles with rear height con-
trol air suspension system:
When jacking up or installing
tire chains, be sure to set
manual control mode by
pushing the mode select
switch and stop the engine.
Otherwise, the vehicle height
may change because of the
automatic leveling function,
resulting in an accident.
1. Get the required tools under the
right side second seat and
spare tire.
1. Tool bag
2. Jack
To get the tools, you need to fold up
the right side second seat. As for the
operation of folding up the seat, see
ªÐTumbling second seats for luggage
spaceº on page 52 in Section 1±3.
To prepare yourself for an emergency,
you should familiarize yourself with
the use of the jack, each of the tools
and their storage locations.

If towing is necessary, we recom-
mended you have it done by your
Toyota dealer or a commercial tow
truck service. In consultation with them,
have your vehicle towed using either (a)
or (b).
Only when you cannot receive a towing
service from a Toyota dealer or com-
mercial tow truck service, tow your ve-
hicle carefully in accordance with the
instructions given in ªÐEmergency tow-
ingº on page 399 in this Section.
Proper equipment will help ensure that
your vehicle is not damaged while being
towed. Commercial operators are generally
aware of the state/provincial and local
laws pertaining to towing.
Your vehicle can be damaged if it is
towed incorrectly. Although most operators
know the correct procedure, it is possible
to make a mistake. To avoid damage to
your vehicle, make sure the following pre-
cautions are observed. If necessary, show
this page to the tow truck driver.TOWING PRECAUTIONS:
Use a safety chain system for all towing,
and abide by the state/provincial and local
laws. The wheels and axle on the ground
must be in good condition. If they are
damaged, use a towing dolly.
CAUTION
Vehicles with rear height control air
suspension system: When your ve-
hicle is towed, set the vehicle height
to ªNº in automatic control mode,
then select manual control mode by
pushing the mode select switch.
Otherwise, the vehicle height may
change because of the automatic lev-
eling function, resulting in an acci-
dent. For details, see ªRear height
control air suspensionº on page 189
in Section 1±7.
Two±wheel drive modelsÐ
(a) Towing with wheel lift type truck
From frontÐ
Use a towing dolly under the rear wheels.
NOTICE
Never tow a vehicle from the front
with the rear wheels on the ground,
as this may cause serious damage to
the transmission.
From rearÐ
Place the ignition key in the ªACCº posi-
tion.
NOTICE

When lifting wheels, take care to
ensure adequate ground clearance
for towing at the opposite end of
the raised vehicle. Otherwise, the
bumper and/or underbody of the
towed vehicle will be damaged dur-
ing towing.

Do not tow with the key removed or
in the ªLOCKº position, as the
steering lock mechanism is not
strong enough to hold the front
wheels straight while towing.

TIRE CHAIN SELECTION
Use the tire chains of correct size.
Regulations regarding the use of tire
chains vary according to location or
type of road, so always check local reg-
ulations before installing chains.
CHAIN INSTALLATION
Install the chains on the rear tires as
tightly as possible. Do not use tire
chains on the front tires. Retighten
chains after driving 0.5Ð1.0 km
(1/4Ð1/2 mile).
When installing chains on your tires, care-
fully follow the instructions of the chain
manufacturer.
If wheel covers are used, they will be
scratched by the chain band, so remove
the covers before putting on the chains.CAUTION

Do not exceed 50 km/h (30 mph) or
the chain manufacturer 's recom-
mended speed limit, whichever is
lower.

Drive carefully avoiding bumps,
holes, and sharp turns, which may
cause the vehicle to bounce.

Avoid sharp turns or locked±wheel
braking, as use of chains may ad-
versely affect vehicle handling.

When driving with chains installed,
be sure to drive carefully. Slow
down before entering curves to
avoid losing control of the vehicle.
Otherwise an accident may occur.
WHEN TO REPLACE YOUR WHEELS
If you have wheel damage such as
bending, cracks or heavy corrosion, the
wheel should be replaced.
If you fail to replace a damaged wheel,
the tire may slip off the wheel or cause
loss of handling control.
WHEEL SELECTION
When replacing wheels, care should be
taken to ensure that the wheels are re-
placed by ones with the same load ca-
pacity, diameter, rim width, and offset.
Correct replacement wheels are available
at your Toyota dealer.
A wheel of a different size or type may
adversely affect handling, wheel and bear-
ing life, brake cooling, speedometer/odom-
eter calibration, stopping ability, headlight
aim, bumper height, vehicle ground clear-
ance, and tire or snow chain clearance to
the body and chassis.
