When driving
The distance that appears on the screen
between three-dimensional objects (such
as vehicles) and flat surfaces (such as
the road) and the actual distance differ as
follows.
In reality, C = A < B (C and A are equally
far away; B is farther than C and A). How-
ever, on the screen, the situation appears
to be A < B < C.
On the screen, it appears that a truck is
parking about 1.5 ft. (0.5 m) away. How-
ever, in reality if you back up to point A,
you will hit the truck.

■Rear view monitor system camera
The rear view monitor system camera is
located on the back door as shown in the
illustration.
In the following cases, it may become dif-
ficult to see the images on the screen,
even when the system is functioning cor-
rectly.
●The vehicle is in a dark area, such
as at night.
● The temperature near the lens is
extremely high or low.
● Water droplets are on the camera
lens or humidity is high, such as
when it rains.
● Foreign matter, such as snow or
mud, adheres to the camera lens.
● The sun or headlights are shining
directly into the camera lens.
● A bright object such as a white wall
is reflected in the mirror surface
over the monitor.
● When the camera has scratches or
dirt on it.

■Smear effect
■ Flicker effect
When the camera is used under fluorescent lights, sodium lights, mercury
lights, etc., the lights and the illuminated areas may appear to flicker.
If a bright light, such as sunlight
reflected off the vehicle body, is picked
up by the camera, a smear effect* char-
acteristic to the camera may occur.

up by the camera; when transmitted
by the camera, the light source
appears to have a vertical streak
above and below it.

CAUTION
■When using the rear view monitor system
Observe the following precautions to avoid an accident that could result in
death or serious injuries.
● Never depend solely on the rear view monitor system when reversing.
● Always check visually and with the mirrors to confirm your intended path is
clear.
● Always check the vehicle surroundi ng area, because the guide lines are
estimates of distance and location.
● The guide lines are assistant lines and do not change even if the steering
wheel is turned.
● Depicted distances between objects and flat surfaces differ from actual
distances.
● Do not use the system if back door is open.
■ Conditions which may affect the rear view monitor system
● If the back of the vehicle has been hit, the camera’s position and mounting
angle may have changed. Have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota
dealer.
● Rapid temperature changes, such as when hot water is poured on the
vehicle in cold weather, may cause the system to function abnormally.
● If the camera lens is dirty, it cannot transmit a clear image. Rinse with
water and wipe with a soft cloth. If extremely dirty, wash with a mild
cleanser and rinse.
● The displayed image may be darker and moving images may be slightly
distorted when the system is cold.
■ Caution while driving in reverse
Do not change modes while the vehicle is moving.

NOTICE
■Handling of the camera
●As the camera has a water proof construction, do not detach, disassemble
or modify it. This may cause incorrect operation.
● If the camera lens becomes dirty, it cannot transmit a clear image. If water
droplets, snow, or mud adhere to the lens, rinse with water and wipe with a
soft cloth. If the lens is extremely dirty, wash it with a mild cleanser and
rinse.
● Do not subject the camera to a strong impact.
● Do not allow organic solvent, car wax, window cleaner or glass coat to
adhere to the camera. If this happens, wipe it off as soon as possible.
● When washing the vehicle, do not apply intensive bursts of water to the
camera or camera area. Doing so may result in the camera malfunction-
ing.
● If the tire size is changed, the area displayed on the screen may change.

BSM (Blind Spot Monitor)
: If equipped
The Blind Spot Monitor is a system that assists the driver to confirm
safety when changing lanes.
The system uses radar sensors to de tect vehicles that are traveling
in an adjacent lane in the area th at is not reflected in the outside
rear view mirror (the blind spot), and advises the driver of the vehi-
cles existence via the outside rear view mirror indicator.
BSM main switch
Pressing the switch turns the system on or off. When the system is set
to on, the switch’s indicator illuminates.
Outside rear view mirror indicator
When a vehicle is detected in the outside rear view mirror blind spot
area, the outside rear view mirror indicator on that side illuminates. If
the turn signal lever is operated when a vehicle is in the outside rear
view mirror’s blind spot area, the outside rear view mirror indicator
flashes.

The Blind Spot Monitor system detection areas
The outside rear view mirror blind spot areas that vehicles can be
detected in are outlined below.
The range of the detection area
extends to:Approximately 11.5 ft. (3.5 m)
from the side of the vehicle
The first 1.6 ft. (0.5 m) from the
side of the vehicle is not in the
detection area
Approximately 9.8 ft. (3 m)
from the rear bumper
Approximately 3.3 ft. (1 m) for-
ward of the rear bumper
■The Blind Spot Monitor system is operational when
The BSM main switch is set to ON and vehicle speed is greater than about
25 mph (40 km/h)
■ The sensors will detect a vehicle when
The Blind Spot Monitor system will detect a vehicle in the detection area
when the following conditions are met:
●When a vehicle in an adjacent lane overtakes the vehicle
● When another vehicle enters the vehicles detection area when it changes
lanes.

■Conditions under which the sensors will not detect a vehicle
The Blind Spot Monitor system is not designed to detect the following types
of vehicles and/or objects:
●Vehicles that enter the detection area from the opposite direction
● Motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians etc. that enter the detection area*
● Following vehicles that are in the same lane*
● Guardrails, walls, signs, parked vehicles and similar stationary objects
that enter the detection area*
● Vehicles driving 2 lanes across from your vehicle that enter the detection
area*
*: Depending on conditions, unnecessary detection of a vehicle and/or object may occur
■ Conditions under which the Blind Spot Monitor system may not func-
tion correctly
● The Blind Spot Monitor system may not detect vehicles correctly in the
following conditions:
• During bad weather such as heavy rain, fog, snow etc.
• When there is a significant difference in speed between your vehicle
and the vehicle that enters the detection area
• When a vehicle is in the detection area from a stop and remains in the detection area as your vehicle accelerates
• If a vehicle enters the detection area when driving up or down consec- utive steep inclines
• When driving on a road surface that is wet due to rain, previous rain, standing water etc.
• When multiple vehicles approach with only a small gap between each vehicle
• When vehicle lanes are wide, and the vehicle in the next lane is too far away from your vehicle
• When the vehicle that enters the detection area is traveling at about the same speed as your vehicle
• When towing anything such as trailer, boat, etc.

●The Blind Spot Monitor system may detect a vehicle and/or object unnec-
essarily under the following conditions:
• When vehicle lanes are narrow and a vehicle driving 2 lanes across
from your vehicle enters the detection area
• When on sharp bends and a following vehicle is present
■ The outside rear view mirror indicators visibility
When under strong sunlight, the outside rear view mirror indicator may be
difficult to see.
■ When there is a malfunction in the system
If a system malfunction is detected due to any of the following reasons,
warning message appears on the multi-information display: ( P. 613)
● There is a malfunction with the sensors
● The sensors have become dirty
● The outside temperature is extremely high or low
● The sensor voltage has become abnormal
■ Certification for the BSM

CAUTION
■Cautions regarding the use of the system
The driver is solely responsible for safe driving. Always drive safely, taking
care to observe your surroundings.
The Blind Spot Monitor is a supplementary system which alerts the driver
that a vehicle is present in the outside rear view mirror’s blind spot. Do not
overly rely on the Blind Spot Monitor system. The system does not judge if it
is safe to change lanes, therefore over reliance could cause an accident
resulting in death or serious injury. According to conditions, the system may
not function correctly. Therefore the driver’s own visual confirmation of
safety is necessary.
■ Handling the radar sensor
There is 1 Blind Spot Monitor sensor installed on the left and right side of the
vehicle rear bumper respectively. Observe the following to ensure the Blind
Spot Monitor system can function correctly.
●Do not subject the sensor or surrounding area on the bumper to a strong
impact. If the sensor moves even slightly off position, the system may mal-
function and vehicles that enter the detection area may not be detected. If
the sensor or surrounding area is subject to a strong impact, always have
the area inspected by your Toyota dealer.
● Do not disassemble the sensor or its surrounding area on the bumper
● Do not attach accessories or stickers to the sensor or surrounding area on
the bumper
● Do not modify the sensor or surrounding area on the bumper
● Do not paint the sensor or surrounding area on the bumper
●Keep the sensor and its surrounding
area on the bumper clean at all times
