WARNING
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may cause the driver’s floor mat to slip, possibly interfering
with the pedals while driving. An unexpectedly high speed may result or it may
become difficult to stop the vehicle. This could lead to an acc ident, resulting in
death or serious injury.
■ When installing the driver’s floor mat
â—Ź Do not use floor mats designed for other models or different mo del year
vehicles, even if they are Toyota Genuine floor mats.
● Only use floor mats designed for the driver’s seat.
â—Ź Always install the floor mat securely using the retaining hooks (clips) pro-
vided.
â—Ź Do not use two or more floor mats on top of each other.
â—Ź Do not place the floor mat bottom-side up or upside-down.
â–  Before driving
â—Ź Check that the floor mat is securely
fixed in the correct place with all the
provided retaining hooks (clips). Be
especially careful to perform this check
after cleaning the floor.
â—Ź With the engine stopped and the shift
lever in P, fully depress each pedal to
the floor to make sure it does not inter-
fere with the floor mat.

WARNING
â– When installing a booster seat
To prevent the belt from going into ALR lock mode, do not fully extend the
shoulder belt. ALR mode causes the belt to tighten only. This c ould cause
injury or discomfort to the child. ( ď‚®P. 34)
â–  When installing a child restraint system
Follow the directions given in the child restraint system insta llation manual
and fix the child restraint system securely in place.
If the child restraint system is not correctly fixed in place, the child or other
passengers may be seriously injured or even killed in the event of a sudden
braking or an accident.
â—Ź Vehicles with bench type second seats: When installing a child restraint
system on the second seat, adjust both seat cushions to the sam e position
and align both seatbacks at the same angle. The seatbacks must be
adjusted to the same angle. Otherwise, the child restraint syst em cannot
be securely restrained and this may cause death or serious injuries in the
event of sudden braking, sudden swerving or an accident.
● If the driver’s seat interferes with the
child restraint system and prevents it
from being attached correctly, attach the
child restraint system to the right-hand
rear seat.
â—Ź Adjust the front passenger seat so that
it does not interfere with the child
restraint system.
â—Ź Only put a forward-facing child restraint
system on the front seat when unavoid-
able. When installing a forward-facing
child restraint system on the front pas-
senger seat, move the seat as far back
as possible even if the “AIR BAG OFF”
indicator light is illuminated. Failure to
do so may result in death or serious
injury if the airbags deploy (inflate).

push the release button and take
the key out.
The mechanical key can only be
inserted in one direction, as the
key only has grooves on one side.
If the key cannot be inserted in a
lock cylinder, turn it over and reat-
tempt to insert it.
After using the mechanical key, store it in the electronic key. Carry the
mechanical key together with the electronic key. If the electronic key
battery is depleted or the ent ry function does not operate prop erly, you
will need the mechanical key. ( ď‚®507)

the electronic key only.
â–  If you lose your keys
New genuine key can be made by your Toyota dealer.
The following are necessary when making new keys.
Mechanical key:
The key number for the mechanical key stamped on the number pla te and the
other key.
Key:
The key number for key stamped on the key number plate.
Keep the plates in a safe place such as your wallet, not in the vehicle.
There are key number plates for the mechanical key and key resp ectively.
When storing them, keep them in a safe place in a manner to distinguish one
from the other (such as markings, etc.).

â–  Alarms and warning indicators
A combination of exterior and interior alarms as well as warnin g messages
shown on the multi-information display are used to prevent theft of the vehicle
and accidents resulting from erroneous operation. Take appropriate mea-
sures in response to any warning message on the multi-information display.
( ď‚®P. 479)
The following table describes circumstances and correction procedures when
only alarms are sounded.
When locking or unlocking the
doors
The system can be operated
when the electronic key is within
about 2.3 ft. (0.7 m) of either of
the front outside door handles.
(Only the doors detecting the key
can be operated.)
When starting the engine or changing engine switch modes
The system can be operated when the electronic key is inside the
vehicle.

SEQUOIA_OM_USA_OM0C035Uâ–
Note for the entry function
â—ŹEven when the electronic key is within the effective range (det ection areas),
the system may not operate properly in the following cases:
• The electronic key is too close to the window or outside door handle, near
the ground, or in a high place when the doors are locked or unl ocked.
• The electronic key is on the instrument panel or floor, or in the console
box or glove box when the engine is started or engine switch mo des are
changed.
â—Ź Do not leave the electronic key on top of the instrument panel or near the
door pockets when exiting the vehicle. Depending on the radio w ave recep-
tion conditions, it may be detected by the antenna outside the cabin and the
door will become lockable from the outside, possibly trapping the electronic
key inside the vehicle.
â—Ź As long as the electronic key is within the effective range, th e doors may be
locked or unlocked by anyone. However, only the doors detecting the elec-
tronic key can be used to unlock the vehicle.
â—Ź Even if the electronic key is not inside the vehicle, it may be possible to start
the engine if the electronic key is near the window.
â—Ź The doors may unlock or lock if a large amount of water splashe s on the
door handle, such as in the rain or in a car wash, when the electronic key is
within the effective range. (The doors will automatically be lo cked after
approximately 60 seconds if the doors are not opened and closed.)
â—Ź If the wireless remote control is used to lock the doors when t he electronic
key is near the vehicle, there is a possibility that the door m ay not be
unlocked by the entry function. (Use the wireless remote contro l to unlock
the doors.)
â—Ź Touching the door lock or unlock sensor while wearing gloves ma y prevent
lock or unlock operation. Remove the gloves and touch the lock sensor
again.
â—Ź When the lock operation is performed using the lock sensor, rec ognition sig-
nals will be shown up to two consecutive times. After this, no recognition
signals will be given.
â—Ź If the door handle becomes wet while the electronic key is with in the effec-
tive range, the door may lock and unlock repeatedly. In this ca se, follow the
following correction procedures to wash the vehicle:
• Place the electronic key in a location 6 ft. (2 m) or more awa y from the
vehicle. (Take care to ensure that the key is not stolen.)
• Set the electronic key to battery-saving mode to disable the s mart key
system. ( ď‚®P. 130)
â—Ź If the electronic key is inside the vehicle and a door handle b ecomes wet
during a car wash, a message may be shown on the multi-informat ion dis-
play and a buzzer will sound outside the vehicle. To turn off t he alarm, lock
all the doors.

â– When starting off on an uphill
Hill-start assist control is activated. (
ď‚®P. 322)
â–  Driving in the rain
â—ŹDrive carefully when it is raining, because visibility will be reduced, the win-
dows may become fogged-up, and the road will be slippery.
â—Ź Drive carefully when it starts to rain, because the road surface will be espe-
cially slippery.
â—Ź Refrain from driving at high speeds in the rain, as there may b e a layer of
water between the tires and the road surface, preventing the st eering and
brakes from operating properly.
â–  Engine speed while driving
In the following conditions, the engine speed may become high while driving.
This is due to automatic up-shifting control or down-shifting implementation to
meet driving conditions. It does not indicate sudden acceleration.
â—ŹThe vehicle is judged to be driving uphill or downhill
â—Ź When the accelerator pedal is released
â—Ź When the brake pedal is depressed while S mode is selected
â–  Restraining the engine out put (Brake Override System)
â—Ź When the accelerator and brake pedals are depressed at the same time, the
engine output may be restrained.
â—Ź A warning message is displayed on the multi-information display while the
system is operating.
â–  Restraining sudden start (Drive-Start Control)
â—Ź When the following unusual operation is performed, the engine o utput may
be restrained.
• When the shift lever is shifted from R to D, D to R, N to R, P to D, or P to
R (D includes S) with the accelerator pedal depressed, a warnin g mes-
sage appears on the multi-information display.
• When the accelerator pedal is depressed too much while the veh icle is in
reverse.
â—Ź While Drive-Start Control is being activated, your vehicle may have trouble
escaping from the mud or fresh snow. In such case, perform the following
actions to cancel Drive-Start Control so that the vehicle may b ecome able to
escape from the mud or fresh snow.
• Deactivate TRAC ( P. 323)
• Turn on the AUTO LSD system. ( P. 320)
• 4WD models: Put the four-wheel drive control switch is in “4L” position. ( P. 315)
• 4WD models: Lock the center differential. ( P. 316)

WARNING
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
â– When driving the vehicle
â—Ź During normal driving, do not turn off the engine. Turning the engine off
while driving will not cause loss of steering or braking contro l, but the
power assist to these systems will be lost. This will make it m ore difficult to
steer and brake, so you should pull over and stop the vehicle a s soon as it
is safe to do so.
However, in the event of an emergency, such as if it becomes im possible
to stop the vehicle in the normal way: ď‚®P. 461
â—Ź Use engine braking (downshift) to maintain a safe speed when driving
down a steep hill.
Using the brakes continuously may cause the brakes to overheat and lose
effectiveness. ( ď‚®P. 220)
â—Ź Do not adjust the positions of the steering wheel, the seat, or the inside or
outside rear view mirrors while driving.
Doing so may result in a loss of vehicle control.
● Always check that all passengers’ arms, heads or other parts of their body
are not outside the vehicle.
â—Ź Do not drive in excess of the speed limit. Even if the legal sp eed limit per-
mits it, do not drive over 85 mph (140 km/h) unless your vehicl e has high-
speed capability tires. Driving over 85 mph (140 km/h) may resu lt in tire
failure, loss of control and possible injury. Be sure to consult a tire dealer
to determine whether the tires on your vehicle are high-speed c apability
tires or not before driving at such speeds.
â—Ź On vehicles with electronically modulated air suspension, if you drive
through deep water over about 20 in. (500 mm) in depth, put the vehicle
height in the “HI” mode using the height control switch and the n change to
manual mode by pushing the height control mode select switch. D rive your
vehicle at 18 mph (30 km/h) or less. Do not drive through water deeper
than about 28 in. (700 mm) even if the vehicle height is in “HI” mode.

SEQUOIA_OM_USA_OM0C035U
WARNING
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to do so may result in death or serious injury.
â– When taking a nap in the vehicle
Always turn the engine off. Otherwise, if you accidentally move the shift
lever or depress the accelerator pedal, this could cause an acc ident or fire
due to engine overheating. Additionally, if the vehicle is park ed in a poorly
ventilated area, exhaust gases may collect and enter the vehicl e, leading to
death or a serious health hazard.
â–  When braking
â—Ź When the brakes are wet, drive more cautiously.
Braking distance increases when the brakes are wet, and this ma y cause
one side of the vehicle to brake differently than the other sid e. Also, the
parking brake may not securely hold the vehicle.
â—Ź If the brake booster device does not operate, do not follow oth er vehicles
closely and avoid hills or shar p turns that require braking.
In this case, braking is still possible, but the brake pedal sh ould be
depressed more firmly than usual. Also, the braking distance wi ll increase.
Have your brakes fixed immediately.
â—Ź Do not pump the brake pedal if the engine stalls.
Each push on the brake pedal uses up the reserve for the power-assisted
brakes.
â—Ź The brake system consists of 2 individual hydraulic systems; if one of the
systems fails, the other will still operate. In this case, the brake pedal
should be depressed more firmly than usual and the braking dist ance will
increase.
If this happens, do not continue to drive the vehicle. Have you r brakes
fixed immediately.
â–  If the vehicle becomes stuck (4WD models)
Do not spin the wheels excessively when any of the tires is up in the air, or
the vehicle is stuck in sand, mud, etc. This may damage the driveline com-
ponents or propel the vehicle forward or backward, causing an a ccident.
