Riding with children
Observe the following pre-
cautions when children are
in the vehicle.
Use a child restraint system
appropriate for the child,
until the child becomes
large enough to properly
wear the vehicle’s seat belt.
 It is recommended that chil-
dren sit in the rear seats to
avoid accidental contact
with the shift lever, wiper
switch, etc.
Use the rear door child-pro-
tector lock or the window
lock switch to avoid children
opening the door while driv-
ing or operating the power
window accidentally.

Do not let small children
operate equipment which
may catch or pinch body
parts, such as the power
window, hood, back door,
seats, etc.
WARNING
■When children are in the vehi-
cle
Never leave children unattended
in the vehicle, and never allow
children to have or use the key.
Children may be able to start the
vehicle or shift the vehicle into
neutral. There is also a danger
that children ma y injure them-
selves by playing with the win-
dows or other features of the
vehicle. In addition, heat build-up
or extremely cold temperatures
inside the vehicle can be fatal to
children.

■During normal driving
The gasoline engine is predomi-
nantly used. The electric motor
(traction motor) charges the
hybrid battery (traction battery)
as necessary.
■When accelerating sharply
When the accelerator pedal is
depressed heavily, the power of
the hybrid battery (traction bat-
tery) is added to that of the gas-
oline engine via the electric
motor (traction motor).
■When braking (regenera-
tive braking)
The wheels operate the electric
motor (traction motor) as a
power generator, and the hybrid
battery (traction battery) is
charged.
■Regenerative braking
●In the following si tuations, kinetic
energy is converted to electric
energy and deceleration force can
be obtained in conjunction with
the recharging of the hybrid bat-
tery (traction battery).
• The accelerator pedal is released while driving with the shift lever in D or S.
• The brake pedal is depressed while driving with t he shift lever in
D or S.
■Conditions in which the gaso-
line engine may not stop
The gasoline engine starts and
stops automatically. However, it may
not stop automatic ally in the follow-
ing conditions:
●During gasoline engine warm-up
●During hybrid battery (traction bat-
tery) charging
●When the temperature of the
hybrid battery (traction battery) is
high or low
●When the heater is switched on
●When the “TOW HA UL” switch is
on
●When the “MTS” switch is on
●When the front-wheel drive control
switch is in “4H” or “4L”
●When the hood is opened during
“READY” indicator is illuminated
●When the shift lever is shifted to S
Depending on the circumstances,
the gasoline engine may also not
stop automatically in other situa-
tions.
■Charging the hybrid battery
(traction battery)
As the gasoline engine charges the
hybrid battery (trac tion battery), the
battery does not need to be charged
from an outside source. However, if
the vehicle is left parked for a long
time the hybrid battery (traction bat-
tery) will slowly dis charge. For this
reason, be sure to drive the vehicle
at least once every few months for
at least 30 minutes or 10 miles (16
km). If the hybrid battery (traction
battery) becomes fully discharged
and you are unabl e to start the
hybrid system, contact your Toyota
dealer.

■Items to check before lock-
ing the vehicle
To prevent unexpected trigger-
ing of the alarm and vehicle
theft, make sure of the following:
 Nobody is in the vehicle.
 The windows and the moon
roof (if equipped) or the pan-
oramic moon roof (if
equipped) are closed before
the alarm is set.
 No valuables or other per-
sonal items are left in the
vehicle.
■Setting
Close the doors, back door,
glass hatch and hood, and lock all the doors. The system will be
set automatically after 30 sec-
onds.
The indicator light changes from
being on to flashing when the sys-
tem is set.
■Deactivating or stopping
Do one of the following to deac-
tivate or stop the alarms:
 Unlock the doors or open the
back door using the entry
function or wireless remote
control.
 Start the hybrid system. (The
alarm is activated and will be
released/stopped after a few
seconds.)
If the alarm does not stop,
turn the power switch to OFF
and unlock the door using the
wireless remote control. If it
still does not stop, keep the
power switch OFF and wait
until it stops.
■Setting the alarm
The alarm can be set if all the doors
are closed even with the hood open.
■System maintenance
The vehicle has a maintenance-free
type alarm system.
Alarm
The alarm uses light and
sound to give an alert when
an intrusion is detected.
The alarm is triggered in the
following situations when
the alarm is set:
 A locked door, back door or
glass hatch is unlocked or
opened in any way other
than using the entry func-
tion or wireless remote con-
trol. (The doors will lock
again automatically.)
The hood is opened.

For safety and security
■Triggering of the alarm
The alarm may be triggered in the
following situations:
(Stopping the alarm deactivates the
alarm system.)
●The doors are unlocked using the
mechanical key.
●When a person remaining in the
vehicle opens a door, the back
door, hood, unlocks, turns the
power switch to ON, or starts the
hybrid system.
●The 12-volt battery is recharged or
replaced when the vehicle is
locked. ( P.540)
■Alarm-operated door lock
In the following cases, depending
on the situation, th e door may auto-
matically lock to p revent improper
entry into the vehicle:
●When a person remaining in the
vehicle unlocks the door and the
alarm is activated.
●While the alarm i s activated, a
person remaining in the vehicle
unlocks the door.
●When recharging or replacing the
12-volt battery.
If a door is unlocked with the
mechanical key while the alarm
is being set, the pre-alarm will
sound for 10 seconds.
After pre-alarm sounding for 10
seconds, alarm will sound.
Do any of the following in order
to deactivate or stop the pre-
alarm:
 Close the doors, and lock all
doors by smart key system or
wireless remote control.
 Unlock the doors or open the
back door using the entry
function or wireless remote
control.
 Start the hybrid system. (After
the alarm will be activated, it
will be deactivated and stop
after a few seconds.)
NOTICE
■To ensure the system oper-
ates correctly
Do not modify or remove the sys-
tem. If modified or removed, the
proper operation of the system
cannot be guaranteed.

■If a warning message is displayed on the multi-information disp lay
A system may be tempor arily unavailable or there may be a malfu nction in
the system.
●In the following situations, perform the actions specified in t he table. When
the normal operating conditions are detected, the message will disappear
and the system will be come operational.
If the message does not disapp ear, contact your Toyota dealer.

When the area around a camera is
covered with dirt, moisture (fogged
up, covered with condensation, ice,
etc.), or other foreign matterUsing the wiper and A/C function,
remove the dirt and other attached

When the temperature around the
front camera is outside of the opera-
tional range, such as when the vehi-
cle is in the sun or in an extremely
cold environment
If the front camera is hot, such as
after the vehicle had been parked in
the sun, use the air conditioning sys-
tem to decrease the temperature
around the front camera.
If a sunshade was used when the
vehicle was parked, depending on its
type, the sunlight reflected from the
surface of the sunshade may cause
the temperature of the front camera
to become excessively high.
If the front camera is cold, such after
the vehicle is parked in an extremely
cold environment, use the air condi-
tioning system to increase the tem-
perature around the front camera.
The area in front o f the front camera
is obstructed, such as when the
hood is open or a sticker is attached
to the part of the win dshield in front
of the front camera.
Close the hood, rem ove the sticker,
etc., to clear the obstruction.
When “Pre-Collisio n System Radar
In Self Calibration Unavailable See
Owner’s Manual” is displayed.Check whether there is attached
materials on the radar sensor and
radar sensor cover, and if there is,
remove it.

WARNING
●Do not use devices which pro-
duce steam while the windows
are closed. Doing so may cause
the windows to fog up, reducing
visibility and making it difficult to
drive safely. Also, the steam
may damage or negatively
affect other devices. If the
device must be used, stop the
vehicle and open the windows
before use.
●Do not use damaged electronic
devices. The power supply
function may not be able to be
used.
●Do not disconnect the plug of a
device while your hands are wet
or insert a pin or other object
into the pow er outlet. Also, if a
liquid or snow is on the power
outlet, dry the outlet before
using it.
●Do not attempt to modify, disas-
semble or repair a power outlet.
For information on repairs, con-
tact your Toyota dealer.
●Do not let children touch the
power outlets.
●Keep the power outlets free of
dust and foreign matter. Also,
regularly clean the power outlet.
●If the plug of a device fits
loosely in a pow er outlet, even
though it is fully inserted,
replace the power outlet. For
information on replacement,
contact your Toyota dealer.
■Using the power outlets while
parked or stopped
Observe the following precau-
tions.
Failure to do so may lead to an
accident, possibly resulting in
death or serious injury.
●Do not leave the vehicle unat-
tended while the hybrid system
is operating and a device is con-
nected to a power outlet.
●Do not place luggage or get
near the vicinit y of the tailpipe.
●Make sure that the hood is
closed. Do not put your head or
hands anywhere inside the
engine room, as the cooling
fans may operate suddenly. If
too close, hands and clothing
(especially a tie, scarf, etc.) may
get caught in a fan.
●Do not stop the vehicle near
objects which burn easily.
●Install and use appropriately
related devices to make air sup-
ply and exhaust ventilation pos-
sible in places where ventilation
is bad, such as within garages,
and places where the vehicle is
surrounded (places where snow
accumulates).
●Do not use in places where ven-
tilation is bad, such as within
garages where there are no air
supply and exhaust ventilation
devices, and places where the
vehicle is surrounded (places
where snow accumulates, etc.).
●Do not use the power outlets if
the vehicle has a vehicle cover
installed.
●Do not sleep in the vehicle while
using devices such as an elec-
tric heater.
■Devices to be connected
●Read the instruction manual
included with the electronic
device being used and observe
the precautions that are stated
regarding the product.
●Do not use when the power plug
or electronic device are dam-
aged.

Check that the hood is fully closed
and locked.
If the hood is not locked properly,
it may open while the vehicle is in
motion and cause an accident,
which may result in death or seri-
ous injury.

5387-2. Steps to take in an emergency

If you have a set of jumper (or
booster) cables and a second
vehicle with a 12-volt battery,
you can jump start your vehicle
by following the steps below.
1Confirm that the electronic
key is being carried.
When connecting the jumper (or
booster) cables, depending on the
situation, the ala rm may activate
and doors locked. ( P. 8 5 )
2 Open the hood ( P.464) and
fuse box cover.
Push claw to completely release
the lock, and them lift up the cover.
3 Open the exclusive jump
starting terminal cover.
4 Remove the engine cover.
Lift the edge of the cover to disen-
gage the fixed pins, and then pull
the cover towards you to remove it.
5 Connect a positive jumper cabl e clamp to on your vehicle and
connect the clamp on the other end of the positive cable to on
the second vehicle. Then, connect a negative cable clamp to
