To use the armrest, pull it out as shown above. When you fold the seatback, the armrest retracts to avoid hitting the manual trans-

seat belt. According to accident statistics,the child is safer when properly restrained
in the rear seat than in the front seat. If a
child must sit in the front seat, the seat
belts should be worn properly. Do not allow the child to stand up or kneel
on either rear or front seats. An unre-
strained child could suffer serious injury
during emergency braking or a collision.
Also, do not let the child sit on your lap. It
does not provide sufficient restraint.
If the shoulder belt falls across the child's neck or face, move the child to the center
position and use the center lap belt.
Small-framed person or youth in a
3-point type seat belt.
On models with
a bench seat, have a small-framed per-
son or youth sit slightly closer to the center
of the vehicle (so the shoulder belt does
not cross over the neck). On models with separate seats, move the seat fully back- ward.
Pregnant woman. Toyota recommends
the use of a seat belt. Ask your doctor for
specific recommendations. The lap belt
should be worn securely and as low as
possible over the hips and not on thewaist.
Injured person. Toyota recommends the
use of a seat belt. Depending on the injury,

To turn the lights on, twist the knob on
the end of the lever.
Daytime Running Light System (Canada only)Ð
The headlights turn on when the parking brake is released with the engine started,
even with the light switch in the OFFº
position. They will not go of until the igni-
tion switch is turned off.
To turn on the other exterior lights and in-
strument
panel lights, twist the knob to the
first clickstop.
Under the daytime running system, the
headlights turn on at reduced intensity.
Twist the knob to the second clickstop toturn to full intensity for driving at night. FIRST CLICKSTOP: Only the parking, tail, license plate and instrument panel
lights turn on.
SECOND CLICKSTOP: The headlights
also turn on.
On some models, the buzzer will remind
you to turn lights off when the driver 's door
is opened if the ignition switch is turned to the LOCKº position with the headlight
switch on.
NOTICE
To prevent the battery from being discharged, do not leave the lights
on for a long period when theengine is not running.

Your automatic transmission has a shift
lock system to minimize the possibility of
incorrect operation. This means you can
only shift out of Pº position when the brake
pedal is depressed (with the ignition
switch in ONº position and the selector le- ver pulled toward you).
(a) Normal driving
1. Start the engine as instructed in How to start the engineº in Part 3. The trans- mission must be in Pº or Nº.
2. With your foot holding down the brake pedal, shift the selector lever to Dº.
In Dº position, the automatic transmis-
sion system will select the most suitable
gear for running conditions such as nor-
mal cruising, hill climbing, hard towing, etc.
Always turn the overdrive switch on for
better fuel economy and quieter driving.
Two-wheel drive models-If the engine
coolant temperature is low, the transmis-
sion will not shift into the overdrive gear
even with the overdrive switch on. Four-wheel drive models-If the engine
coolant t
emperautre is low and the vehicle
is travelling at low speed or when the four-
wheel drive control lever is in L4º (four-
wheel drive, low range), the transmission
will not shift into the overdrive gear evenwith the overdrive switch on. (See Four-
wheel drive systemº in this Chapter for in-
formation of the four-wheel drive control
lever.)
Never put your foot on the accelera-
tor pedal while shifting. CAUTION
!
3. Release the parking brake and brake pedal. Depress the accelerator pedal
slowly for smooth starting.
(b) Using engine braking
To use engine braking, you can downshift the transmission as follows: Turn off the overdrive switch. The O/D
OFFº indicator light will come on andthe transmission will downshift to the
third gear.
Shift into the 2º position. The trans-
mission will downshift to the second
gear when the vehicle speed dropsdown to or lower than the followingspeed, and more powerful engine
braking will be obtained.

66Vehicles with cruise controlÐWhen the
cruise control is being used, even if you
downshift the transmission by turning offthe overdrive switch, engine braking will
not be applied because the cruise control
is not cancelled. For ways to decrease the
vehicle speed, see Cruise controlº in
this
chapter.
Be careful when downshifting on a
slippery surface. Abrupt shifting
could cause the vehicle to spin orskid. CAUTION
!
(c) Using the 2º and Lº positions
The 2º and Lº positions are used for
strong engine braking as described pre-
viously. With the selector lever in 2º or Lº, you
can start the vehicle in motion as with the
lever in Dº. With the selector lever in 2º, the vehicle
will start in the first gear and automatically
shift to the second gear.
With the selector lever in Lº, the trans-
mission is engaged in the first gear.
NOTICE
Be careful not to overrev the en-
gine. Watch the tachometer to
keep engine rpm from going intothe red zone. The approximatemaximum allowable speed for
each position is given below for your reference:Two-wheel drive modelsÐ

Do not continue hill climbing for along time in the 2º or Lº posi-tion. This may cause severe auto-matic transmission damage from
overheating. To prevent such damage, use Dº position for hillclimbing or hard towing.
(d) Backing up
1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop.
2. With the brake pedal held down with your foot, shift the selector lever to the
Rº position.
NOTICE
Never shift into reverse while the vehicle is moving.
(e) Parking
1. Bring the vehicle to a complete stop. Pull the parking brake lever up fully to securely apply the parking brake.
With the brake pedal pressed down,
shift the selector lever to the Pº posi- tion.
While the vehicle is moving, never
attempt to move the selector lever
into Pº position under any circum-
stances. Serious mechanical dam-
age and loss of vehicle control mayresult. CAUTION

The shift pattern is conventional as
shown above.
Press the clutch pedal down fully while
shifting, and then release it slowly. Do not
rest your foot on the pedal while driving,because it will cause clutch trouble. And do not use the clutch to hold the vehicle
when stopped on an uphill grade-use the
parking brake. Recommended shifting speeds
The transmission is fully synchronized
and upshifting or downshifting is easy.
For the best compromise between fuel
economy and vehicle performance, you

Upshifting too soon or downshifting too late will cause lugging, and possibly ping-
ing. Regularly revving the engine to maxi-
mum speed in each gear will cause exces-
sive engine wear and high fuel consumption.
Maximum allowable speeds
To get on a highway or to pass slower traf- fic, maximum acceleration may be neces-
sary. Make sure you observe the following
maximum allowable speeds in each gear:

Do not downshift if you are going faster than the maximum allowable
speed for the next lower gear.
Good driving practice If it is difficult to shift into reverse, put
the transmission in neutral, release
the clutch pedal momentarily, and then
try again.
When towing a trailer, in order to main-
tain engine braking efficiency, do not
use the fifth gear.
Be careful when downshifting on a

Make sure the vehicle is completely stopped before shifting into
reverse.
The four- wheel drive control lever se-
lects one of the transfer modes below
by the position.
The 4WDº indicator light shows when the
four- wheel drive control lever is in the H4º,
Nº or L4º position.
H2º (high speed position, two- wheel
drive): Lever at H2º
Use this for normal driving on dry hard- sur-
faced roads. This position gives greater
economy, quietest ride and least wear.
H4º (high speed position, four- wheel
drive): Lever at H4º
Use this for normal driving on wet, icy or
snow- covered roads. This position pro-
vides greater traction than two- wheel drive.

BAL (Balance)
This knob lets you adjust the balance be- tween the right and left speakers.
Pull out PWR/VOL/BALº . Turn the knob
to adjust the right/left balance. Push the
knob back into its normal position. BASS This knob lets you adjust the bass level. Push BASS/TREBº so that it pops out of
its retracted position. Turn the knob to ad-
just the bass. Push the knob back into its

Type 2-1 only If you are listening to a tape that was re-

Noise Reduction,
push the button marked with the
double-D symbol. The double-D symbol
will appear on the display. Push the button
again to turn off Dolby )
NR. The Dolby NR mode reduces tape noise
by about 10 dB. For best sound reproduc- tion, play your tapes with this button on or
off according to the mode used for record-
ing the tape.

If a metal or chrome equivilant cassette

put in the cassette player, the play-
er will automatically adapt to it and MTLº
will appear on the display.
FADE
Move the FADEº knob around PWR/
VOLº to adjust the front/rear balance. PROG (Program)
Push PROGº to select the other side of
a cassette tape. The display indicates
which side is currently selected ( ~º indi-
cates top side, !º indicates bottom side).
Auto-reverse featureÐAfter the cassette
player reaches the end of a tape side, it automatically reverses and begins to play
the other side. This is true whether the
cassette was playing or fast forwarding.
PWR/VOL (Power/Volume) Push PWR/VOLº to turn the audio sys-
tem on and off. T urn the PWR/VOLº knob
to adjust the volume.
Type 2-2ÐPull out and then turn PR/
VOLº to adjust the balance between the
right and left speakers. Move FADEº
around PWR/VOLº to adjust the front/ rear balance.

Push SKIPº. SKIPº will appear on the
display. The cassette player will keep
track of how much blank space it plays.
Any time it has played about 10 seconds
of blank tape, it will automatically fast for-
ward to the next track and bagin to play.
Push the button a second time to turn off the skip feature. ST (Stereo reception) display
Your radio automatically changes to ste- reo reception when a stereo broadcast is
received. STº appears on the display. Ifthe signal becomes weak, the radio re-
duces the amount of channel separation to prevent the weak signal from creating
noise. If the signal becomes extremely weak, the radio switches from stereo to mono reception.
TAPE
Push TAPEº to switch from radio opera-
tion to cassette operation. If the audio
system is off,
you can turn on the cassette
player by pushing TAPEº. In both cases,a cassette must already be loaded in the
player. TREB (Treble)
This knob lets you adjust the treble level. Push BASS/TREBº so that it pops out of
its retracted position. Pull out the knob.
Turn the knob to adjust the treble. Push the knob back into its retracted position. TUNE
Tuning
Your Toyota has an electronic tuning radio (ETR). Push and release the 
~º (up) or  !º
(down) side of TUNEº to step up or down
the station band. If you hear a beep, you
held the button too long and the radio will
go into the seek mode. Seeking
In the seek mode, the radio finds and plays the next station up or down the sta- tion band.
To seek a station, push a hold the  ~º or  !º
side of TUNEº until you hear a beep. Do this again to find another station. The anti-theft system prevents the audio
system f
rom working after it has been dis-
connected. To activate the system, you
must set a three-digit security code. After the system is set, SECº will appear in the
display each time the ignition is turned
from LOCKº to ACCº or ONº. Also, the
anti-theft light flashes every few seconds
while the ignition key is in the LOCKºposition.
You will need to know your security code
to reactivate your radio after electrical ser-vice is performed on your vehicle.
Choose a security code that is easy to re-
member and keep a copy of it (not in your
Toyota).
NOTICE
If you pushed any wrong buttons on the anti-theft sytem, the
following messages will appear onthe display.

Changing the security code
1. Turn off the audio system.
Turn the ignition key to ACCº.Simultaneously push and hold in 1º, 6º,
and PWR/VOLº until SECº appears in
the display.2. While you are holding in the  ~º side of
TUNEº push 1º.
The display will read - - -º.
On some models,  º and  º will also
turn on.3. Input the existing three-digit code.
You have 10 seconds to enter each digit. For example, 209º:
To set the first digit: Push 1º until the digit
you want appears on the display.
To set the second digit: Push 2º until the
digit you want appears on the display.
To set the third digit: Push 3º until the digit
you want appears on the display.
