Emergency repair method
Position the nail or screw that
has punctured the tire at the bot-
tom, in contact with the ground.
Remove the cap from the valve.
Bring the protruding part of the
valve core tool into contact with
the valve to discharge air.
Pull out the valve core by turning
it counterclockwise using the
valve core tool.
Shake the sealant bottle up and down several times.
Remove the cap of the sealant bottle.

bottle. Hold and tilt the bottle,
then squeeze sealant out of the
bottle as shown.
Remove the injection hose from
the valve and screw the valve
core in the valve securely by
turning it clockwise with the

Connect the air compressor

If the engine will not start
If the engine still does not start after following the correct starting
procedure (P. 186, 190) or releasing the steering lock (P. 188,
193), confirm the following points.
The engine will not start even if you are carrying the correct
key
One of the following may be the cause of the problem.
There may not be sufficient fuel in the vehicle’s tank.
Gasoline engine: Refuel the vehicle.
Diesel engine: (P. 535)
The engine may be flooded. (gasoline engine)
Try to restart the engine once more following correct starting
procedures. (P. 186, 190)
There may be a malfunction in the engine immobilizer system.
(P. 112)
The starter motor turns over slowly, the personal/interior
lights and headlights are dim, or the horn does not sound or
sounds at a low volume
One of the following may be the cause of the problem.
The battery may be discharged. (P. 528)
The battery terminal connections may be loose or corroded.
The starter motor does not turn over (vehicles with smart
entry & start system)
The engine starting system may be malfunctioning due to an
electrical problem such as an open circuit or a blown fuse. How-
ever, an interim measure is available to start the engine.

Emergency start function (vehicles with smart entry & start system)
When the engine does not start, the following steps can be used as
an interim measure to start the engine if the “ENGINE START STOP”
switch is functioning normally.
Vehicles with a Multidrive or an automatic transmission
Set the parking brake.
Put the shift lever in “P”.
Set the “ENGINE START STOP” switch to the ACCESSORY
mode.
Press and hold the “ENGINE START STOP” switch about 15
seconds while depressing the brake pedal firmly.
The starter motor does not turn over, the personal/interior
lights and headlights do not turn on, or the horn does not
sound
One of the following may be the cause of the problem.
One or both of the battery terminals may be disconnected.
The battery may be discharged. (P. 528)
There may be a malfunction in the steering lock system. (vehi-
cles with smart entry & start system)
Contact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly
qualified and equipped professional, if the problem cannot be
repaired, or if repair procedures are unknown.

If the shift lever cannot be shifted from P (vehicles with a Multidrive or an automatic transmission)
For vehicles with a Multidrive or an automatic transmission: If the
shift lever cannot be shifted with your foot on the brake, there may
be a problem with the shift lock system (a system to prevent acci-
dental operation of the shift lever). Have the vehicle inspected by any
authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another duly qualified and
equipped professional, immediately.
The following steps may be used as an emergency measure to
ensure that the shift lever can be shifted.
Set the parking brake.
Vehicles without smart entry & start system: Turn the
engine switch to the “ACC” position.
Vehicles with smart entry & start system: Turn the “ENGINE
START STOP” switch to the ACCESSORY mode.
Depress the brake pedal.
Press the “SHIFT LOCK” but-
ton.
The shift lever can be shifted
while the button is pressed.

If the electronic key does not operate properly (vehicles with smart entr y & start system)
Locking and unlocking the doors and key linked functions
Using the mechanical key
(P. 38) in order to perform the
following operations:
Locks all doors
Unlocks all doors
An alarm will sound if the alarm is
set. (P. 122)
If communication between the electronic key and vehicle is inter-
rupted (P. 57) or the electronic key cannot be used because the
battery is depleted, the smart entry & start system and wireless
remote control cannot be used. In such cases, the doors can be
opened or the engine can be started by following the procedure
below.

Stopping the engine
Shift the shift lever to “P” (Multidrive or automatic transmission) or “N” (man-
ual transmission) and press the “ENGINE START STOP” switch as you nor-
mally do when stopping the engine.
Replacing the key battery
As the above procedure is the temporary measure, it is recommended that
the electronic key battery be replaced immediately when the battery
depletes. (P. 432)
Alarm (if equipped)
Using the mechanical key to lock the doors will not set the alarm system.
If a door is unlocked using the mechanical key when the alarm system is set,
the alarm may be triggered. (P. 122)

CAUTION
If the engine has to be turned off while driving
Power assist for the brakes and steering wheel will be lost, making the
brake pedal harder to depress and the steering wheel heavier to turn.
Decelerate as much as possible before turning off the engine.
Vehicles without smart entry & start system: Never attempt to remove the
key, as doing so will lock the steering wheel.
Vehicles with smart entry &
start system: To stop the
engine, press and hold the
“ENGINE START STOP”
switch for 3 consecutive sec-
onds or more, or press it
briefly 3 times or more in suc-
cession.
Stop the vehicle in a safe place by the road.
Press and hold for 3 seconds or more,
