In order to be effective, the SRS airbags must deploy
with tremendous speed. The rapid deployment of the
SRS airbags makes the SRS airbags themselves poten-
tial sources of death or serious injury if an occupant is
too close to an airbag, or if an object or some part of
his or her body has been placed between the occupant
and the airbag at the time of deployment. This is just
one example of how the instructions in Section 1−3 of
this Owner ’s Manual will help ensure proper use of the
occupant restraint systems, and increase the safety they
can provide to you and your family in the event of an
accident.
Scion recommends you to read the provisions in Section
1 −3 carefully and refer to them as needed during your
time of ownership of this vehicle.Event data recorder
Your vehicle has computers that monitor and control
certain aspects of your vehicle. These computers assist
in driving and maintaining optimal vehicle performance.
Besides storing data useful for troubleshooting, there is
a system to record data in a crash or a near car crash
event. This is called an Event Data Recorder (EDR).
The SRS airbag sensor assembly contains the EDR. In
a crash or a near car crash event, this device records
some or all of the following information:
 Engine speed
 Whether the brake pedal was applied or not
 Vehicle speed
 To what extent the accelerator pedal was depressed
 Position of the transmission shift lever
 Whether the driver and front passenger wore the
seat belts or not
 Driver ’s seat position
 Front passenger ’s occupant classification

When the engine switch is turned to
the “ON” position, the light does not
come on or remains on.
The light comes on while you are driv-
ing.
A warning light turning on briefly during
operation does not indicate a problem.
CAUTION
If the “ABS” warning light remains on
together with the brake system warn-
ing light, immediately stop your ve-
hicle at a safe place and contact your
Scion dealer.
In this case, not only the antilock
brake system will fail but also the
vehicle will become extremely unsta-
ble during braking.
(j) Open Door Warning Light
This light remains on until all the side
doors and back door are completely
closed. (k) SRS Warning Light
This indicator comes on when the en-
gine switch is turned to the “ON” posi-
tion. It goes off after about 6 seconds.
This means the SRS front airbags, SRS
side airbags, curtain shield airbags and
seat belt pretensioners are operating
properly.
This warning light system monitors the
airbag sensor assembly, front airbag sen-
sors, side and curtain shield airbag sensor
assemblies, curtain shield airbag sensor
assemblies, driver ’s seat position sensor,
driver’s seat belt buckle switch, front pas-
senger occupant classification system,
“AIR BAG ON” indicator light, “AIR BAG
OFF” indicator light, front passenger ’s seat
position sensor, front passenger ’s seat
belt buckle switch, seat belt pretensioner
assemblies, inflators, interconnecting wir-
ing and power sources.
If any of the following conditions occurs,
this indicates a malfunction of the airbags
or seat belt pretensioners. Contact your
Scion dealer as soon as possible.
When the engine switch is turned to
the “ON” position, the light does not
come on or remains on for more than
about 6 seconds or flashes.
The light comes on or starts flashing
while you are driving.
The SRS warning light and “AIR BAG
OFF” indicator light will come on if there
is a malfunction in the front passenger
occupant classification system.
(l) Electric Power Steering System Warning Light
The light comes on when the engine
switch is turned to the “ON” positron. If
the electric power steering system warning
light works properly, the light turns off
after a few seconds. If the system has
malfunctions, the light comes on again.

When the headlight switch is turned on,
the brightness of the display will be re-
duced.
You can adjust the brightness of the dis-
play. To adjust the brightness, see “Instru-
ment panel light control” on page 88.
CAUTION
Do not operate the switches while the
vehicle is moving. Make sure to oper-
ate the switches when the vehicle is
stopped.
1. Clock
To adjust the clock, the engine switch
must be in the “ON” position and the ve-
hicle must be stopped.
Pushing the “DISP” switch flashes the in-
dicator for the minute and you can adjust
the minute.
Press the “DISP” switch until the desired
minute will appear.
After 5 or more seconds pass without op-
erating, the indicator for the hour flashes.
Then you can adjust the hour.
Press the “DISP” switch until the desired
hour will appear. After 5 or more seconds pass without op-
erating, the indicator will return to the nor-
mal display.
If quick adjustment to a full hour is de-
sired, push the “DISP” switch for 1 sec-
ond.
For example, if the “DISP” switch is de-
pressed when the time is between
1:01—1:29, the time will change to 1:00.
If the time is between 1:30—1:59, the
time will change to 2:00.
If the electrical power source has been
disconnected from the clock, the time dis-
play will automatically be set to 1:00.
2. Outside temperature display (“C” or “ F”)
The display indicates between the range
of –30 C (–22 F) and 50 C (122 F).
Each time you push the “DISP” switch for
1 second, the display switches between
“  C” and “ F”.
If an abnormality exists in the connection
of the outside air temperature sensor, “––”
will appear on the display. If “––” appears,
contact your Scion dealer. In the following situations, the correct out-
side temperature may not be displayed, or
the display may take longer than normal
to change.
When stopped, or driving at low
speeds (less than 20 km/h [12 mph])
When the outside temperature has
changed suddenly (at the entrance/exit
of a garage, tunnel, etc.)
3. Instantaneous fuel consumption (“MPG”)
The instantaneous fuel consumption is
calculated and displayed based on dis-
tance and fuel consumption with the
engine running.
Note that an accurate figure may not be
shown in the following cases.
The vehicle is stopped with the engine
running. (The display will indicate the
extremely high fuel consumption.)
The vehicle is driving down a long
slope, applying the engine brake. (The
display will indicate the extremely low
fuel consumption.)
The calculation is reset when the engine
switch is turned off.

When the antilock brake system is ac-
tivated, the following conditions may
occur. They do not indicate a malfunc-
tion of the system:
You may hear the anti−lock brake sys-
tem operating and feel the brake pedal
pulsating and the vibrations of the ve-
hicle body and steering wheel. You
may also hear the motor sound in the
engine compartment even after the ve-
hicle is stopped.
At the end of the anti −lock brake sys-
tem activation, the brake pedal may
move a little forward.
CAUTION
Do not overestimate the antilock
brake system: Although the antilock
brake system assists in providing ve-
hicle control, it is still important to
drive with all due care and maintain
a moderate speed and safe distance
from the vehicle in front of you, be-
cause there are limits to the vehicle
stability and effectiveness of steering
wheel operation even with the anti
lock brake system on.
If tire grip performance exceeds its
capability, or if hydroplaning occurs
during high speed driving in the rain,
the antilock brake system does not
provide vehicle control.
Antilock brake system is not de-
signed to shorten the stopping dis-
tance: Always drive at a moderate
speed and maintain a safe distance
from the vehicle in front of you.
Compared with vehicles without an
antilock brake system, your vehicle
may require a longer stopping dis-
tance in the following cases:
Driving on rough, gravel or snow
covered roads.
Driving with tire chains installed.
Driving over the steps such as the
joints on the road.
Driving on roads where the road
surface is pitted or has other differ-
ences in surface height.
Install all 4 tires of specified size at
appropriate pressure: The antilock
brake system detects vehicle speeds
using the speed sensors for respec-
tive wheels’ turning speeds. The use
of tires other than specified may fail
to detect the accurate turning speed
resulting in a longer stopping dis-
tance.
