If the engine coolant temperature gauge
needle is not displayed, there may be a
problem in the system. In this case, con-
tact your Scion dealer as soon as pos-
sible.
NOTICE
Do not remove the thermostat in
the engine cooling system as this
may cause the engine to overheat.
The thermostat is designed to con-
trol the flow of coolant to keep the
temperature of the engine within
the specified operating range.
 Do not continue driving with an
overheated engine. See “If your
vehicle overheats” on page 199.
Tachometer
The tachometer indicates engine speed
in thousands of rpm (revolutions per
minute). Use it while driving to select
correct shift points and to prevent en-
gine lugging and overrevving.
Driving with the engine running too fast
causes excessive engine wear and poor
fuel economy. Remember, in most cases
the slower the engine speed, the greater
the fuel economy.
NOTICE
Do not let the indicator needle get
into the red zone. This may cause
severe engine damage.
Odometer and two trip meters
This meter displays the odometer and
two trip meters.
1. Odometer—Shows the total distance the vehicle has been driven.
2. Two trip meters—Show two different distances independently driven since
the last time each trip meter was set
to zero.
You can use one trip meter to calculate
the fuel economy and the other to
measure the distance on each trip. All
trip meter data are cancelled if the
electrical power source is discon-
nected.

3. Trip meter reset knob—It can reset thetwo trip meters to zero, and also
change the meter display.
To reset the trip meter A to zero, dis-
play the meter A reading, then push
and hold the knob until the meter is
set to zero. The same process can be
applied for resetting the trip meter B.
To change the meter display, quickly
push and release the knob. The meter
display changes in the order from the
odometer to trip meter A to trip meter
B, then back to the odometer each
time you push.
The speed units, km/h and MPH, can
be selected by pushing the trip meter
reset knob for more than 1 second
when the odometer indication is dis-
played.

The system must be reset after the en-
gine oil replacement. Reset the system by
following the procedure below:1. Turn the engine switch to the “OFF” position with the trip meter A reading
shown. (For details, see “Odometer and
two trip meters” on page 95.)
2. Turn the engine switch to the “ON” position while holding down the trip
meter reset knob.
Hold down the knob for at least 5 sec-
onds. The light goes off, and the display
shows zero for 1 second and changes to
the odometer reading.
If the system fails to reset, the light will
keep flashing. (e) Charging System Warning Light
This warning light comes on when the
engine switch is turned to the “ON” posi-
tion, and goes off when the engine is
started.
When there are problems in the charging
system while the engine is r
unning, the
warning light comes on.
NOTICE
When the charging system warning
light comes on while the engine is
running, malfunctions such as the en-
gine drive belt being broken may have
occurred. If the warning light comes
on, immediately stop the vehicle in a
safe place and contact your Scion
dealer.
(f) Malfunction Indicator Lamp
This lamp comes on when the engine
switch is turned to the “ON” position
and goes off after the engine starts.
This means that the warning light sys-
tem is operating properly.
If the lamp remains on, first check the
following.
Empty fuel tank
If the fuel tank is empty, refuel immedi-
ately.
Loose fuel tank cap
If the fuel tank cap is loose, securely
tighten it.
These cases are temporary malfunctions.
The malfunction indicator lamp will go off
after taking several driving trips.
If the lamp does not go off even after
several trips, contact your Scion dealer as
soon as possible.

Your automatic transmission has a shift
lock system to minimize the possibility of
incorrect operation. This means you can
only shift out of “P” position when the
brake pedal is depressed (with the engine
switch in “ON” position).

The shift position is also displayed on the
instrument cluster.
P: Parking, engine starting and key re-

The following information is displayed
on the multiinformation display when
you push the “DISP” switch (on the
instrument cluster) with the engine
switch turned on.
Each time you push the “DISP” switch,
the display changes to the next display
setting.1. Clock
2. Outside temperature
3. Instantaneous fuel consumption
4. Average fuel consumption
5. Driving range
6. Average vehicle speed
7. Elapsed time
The displayed values in the multi −informa-
tion display indicate general driving condi-
tions. Accuracy varies with driving habits
and road conditions.
When the engine switch is on, the last
previously used mode displayed just be-
fore the engine switch is off will appear.
If the electrical power source has been
disconnected from the multi −information
display, the display will automatically be
set to the initial mode.
Multiinformation display

When the headlight switch is turned on,
the brightness of the display will be re-
duced.
You can adjust the brightness of the dis-
play. To adjust the brightness, see “Instru-
ment panel light control” on page 88.
CAUTION
Do not operate the switches while the
vehicle is moving. Make sure to oper-
ate the switches when the vehicle is
stopped.
1. Clock
To adjust the clock, the engine switch
must be in the “ON” position and the ve-
hicle must be stopped.
Pushing the “DISP” switch flashes the in-
dicator for the minute and you can adjust
the minute.
Press the “DISP” switch until the desired
minute will appear.
After 5 or more seconds pass without op-
erating, the indicator for the hour flashes.
Then you can adjust the hour.
Press the “DISP” switch until the desired
hour will appear. After 5 or more seconds pass without op-
erating, the indicator will return to the nor-
mal display.
If quick adjustment to a full hour is de-
sired, push the “DISP” switch for 1 sec-
ond.
For example, if the “DISP” switch is de-
pressed when the time is between
1:01—1:29, the time will change to 1:00.
If the time is between 1:30—1:59, the
time will change to 2:00.
If the electrical power source has been
disconnected from the clock, the time dis-
play will automatically be set to 1:00.
2. Outside temperature display (“C” or “ F”)
The display indicates between the range
of –30 C (–22 F) and 50 C (122 F).
Each time you push the “DISP” switch for
1 second, the display switches between
“  C” and “ F”.
If an abnormality exists in the connection
of the outside air temperature sensor, “––”
will appear on the display. If “––” appears,
contact your Scion dealer. In the following situations, the correct out-
side temperature may not be displayed, or
the display may take longer than normal
to change.
When stopped, or driving at low
speeds (less than 20 km/h [12 mph])
When the outside temperature has
changed suddenly (at the entrance/exit
of a garage, tunnel, etc.)
3. Instantaneous fuel consumption (“MPG”)
The instantaneous fuel consumption is
calculated and displayed based on dis-
tance and fuel consumption with the
engine running.
Note that an accurate figure may not be
shown in the following cases.
The vehicle is stopped with the engine
running. (The display will indicate the
extremely high fuel consumption.)
The vehicle is driving down a long
slope, applying the engine brake. (The
display will indicate the extremely low
fuel consumption.)
The calculation is reset when the engine
switch is turned off.

4. Average fuel consumption (“AVG. MPG”)
Average fuel consumption is calculated
and displayed based on total driving
distance and total fuel consumption
with the engine running.
To reset the calculations, push and hold
the “DISP” switch for more than 1 second.
Every time you refuel the vehicle, the cal-
culation is reset.
5. Driving range (“RANGE MI”)
The distance the vehicle can travel with
the remaining fuel is calculated and
displayed based on the quantity of re-
maining fuel and past fuel consumption.
The driving range display indicates the
approximate distance that you can drive
until the fuel gauge reaches “E”. It is
different from the actual distance traveled.
Every time you refuel the vehicle, the cal-
culation is reset. However, when only a
small amount of fuel is added to the tank,
the display may not be reset. The actual driving range varies with driv-
ing habits and road conditions. If fuel con-
sumption is good, the driving range will be
longer than indicated. If fuel consumption
is poor, the driving range will be shorter
than indicated.
If the low fuel level warning light comes
on, refuel the vehicle even if the display
indicates that the vehicle can be driven
further.
6. Average vehicle speed (“AVG. MPH”)
Average vehicle speed is calculated and
displayed based on total driving dis-
tance and total driving time with the
engine running.
To reset the calculations, push and hold
the “DISP” switch for more than 1 second.
7. Elapsed time (“E/T”)
The elapsed time after the engine
switch is turned on is displayed.
When the engine switch is turned on, driv-
ing time is counted from 0:00. Up to 99:59
(99 hours, 59 minutes) can be displayed.
When the driving time exceeds 99:59, the
counter returns to 0:00.
To reset the calculations, push and hold
the “DISP” switch for more than 1 second.
Power outlet
The power outlet is designed for power
supply for car accessories. To use it,
open as shown.
The engine switch must be in the “ACC”
or “ON” position for the power outlet to be
used.
