Essential Safety Equipment
Front Seat
Seat Slide
To move a seat forward or backward, raise the lever and slide the seat to
the desired position and release the lever.
Make sure the lever returns to its original position and the seat is locked in
place by attempting to push it forward and backward.
Height Adjustment (Driver’s Seat)
To adjust the seat height, move the lever up or down.
Seat Recline
To change the seatback angle, lean forward slightly while raising the lever.
Then lean back to the desired position and release the lever.
Make sure the lever returns to its original position and the se atback is
locked in place by attempting to push it forward and backward.

Rear Seat
By lowering the rear seatbacks the luggage compartment space can
be expanded.
Split Folding the Seatback
WARNING
■ Do not drive the vehicle with occupants on folded down seatbacks or
in the luggage compartment.
Putting occupants in the luggage compartment is dangerous because seat
belts cannot be fastened which could lead to serious injury or death during
sudden braking or a collision.
■ Do not allow children to play inside the vehicle with the seatb acks low-
ered.
Allowing children to play in the vehicle with the seatbacks folded down is
dangerous. If a child enters the luggage compartment and the se atbacks
were raised back up, the child may become trapped in the luggag e com-
partment which could lead to an accident.
■ Tightly secure cargo in the luggage compartment when it is tran s-
ported with the seatbacks folded down.
Driving without tightly securing cargo and luggage is dangerous as it could
move and become an obstruction to driving during emergency brak ing or a
collision resulting in an unexpected accident.
■ When transporting cargo, do not allow the cargo to exceed the height
of the seatbacks.
Transporting cargo stacked higher than the seatbacks is dangero us as visi-
bility to the rear and sides of the vehicle is reduced which could interfere
with driving operations and lead to an accident.

Head Restraints
Adjust the head restraint so that
the center is even with the top of
the passenger’s ears.
To raise a head restraint, pull it up to the desired position.
To lower the head restraint, press the stop-catch release, then push
the head restraint down.
■Front outboard seat
Your vehicle is equipped with head restraints on all outboard
seats and the rear center seat. The head restraints are intende d
to help protect you and the p assengers from neck injury.
WARNING
■Always drive with the head restraints installed when seats are being
used and make sure they are prope rly adjusted. In addition, always
raise the head restraints on all rear seats when they are being used
Driving with the head restraints adjusted too low or removed is dangerous.
With no support behind your head, your neck could be seriously injured in a
collision.

WARNING
■Do not touch the components of t he supplemental restraint system
after the air bags have inflated
Touching the components of the supplemental restraint system af ter the air
bags have inflated is dangerous. Immediately after inflation, t hey are very
hot. You could get burned.
■ Never install any front-end equipment to your vehicle
Installation of front-end equipment, such as frontal protection bar (kangaroo
bar, bull bar, push bar, or other similar devices), snowplow, o r winches, is
dangerous. The air bag crash sensor system could be affected. T his could
cause air bags to inflate unexpectedly, or it could prevent the air bags from
inflating during an accident. Front occupants could be seriously injured.
■ Do not modify the suspension
Modifying the vehicle suspension is dangerous. If the vehicle’s height or the
suspension is modified, the vehicle will be unable to accurately detect a col-
lision or roll-over accident resulting in incorrect or unexpect ed air bag
deployment and the possibility of serious injuries.
■ To prevent false detection by t he air bag sensor system, heed t he fol-
lowing
● Do not use tires or wheels other than those specified for your To y o t a :
Use of any tire or wheel other than those specified for your To yota (P. 582)
is dangerous. Use of such wheels will prevent the vehicle’s acc ident detec-
tions system from accurately detecting a collision or roll-over accident result-
ing in incorrect or unexpected air bag deployment and the possi bility of
serious injuries.
● Do not overload your vehicle:
Overloading your vehicle is dangerous as it could prevent the a ir bag
crash sensor system from accurately detecting a collision or roll-over acci-
dent resulting in incorrect or unexpected air bag deployment an d the pos-
sibility of serious injuries. The gross axle weight rating (GAW R) and the
gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) for your vehicle are on the Motor
Vehicle Safety Standard Label on the driver’s door frame. Do not exceed
these ratings.
● Do not drive the vehicle off-road:
Driving your Toyota off-road is dangerous because the vehicle h as not
been designed to do so. Driving the vehicle off-road could prevent the air
bag crash sensor system from accurately detecting a collision o r roll-over
accident resulting in incorrect or unexpected air bag deploymen t and the
possibility of serious injuries.

When Driving
If the Smart City Brake Support
(SCBS) is operating, the indicator
light (red) flashes.
WARNING
■Do not modify the suspension
If the vehicle height or inclination is changed, the system will not be able to
correctly detect vehicles ahead. This will result in the Smart City Brake Sup-
port (SCBS) system not operating normally or mistakenly operati ng, which
could cause a serious accident.
■ Turn off the Smart City Brake S upport (SCBS) when the vehicle is run-
ning on a chassis roller or being towed
Turn off the Smart City Brake Su pport (SCBS) system to prevent mistaken
operation when the vehicle is running on a chassis roller or be ing towed.
Refer to Stopping The Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) System Op eration
on P. 222.
NOTICE
● When driving off-road in areas where there is grass or forage, it is recom-
mended that the Smart City Brake Support (SCBS) system be turne d off.
● Always use tires for all wheels that are of the specified size, and the same
manufacturer, brand, and tread pattern. In addition, do not use tires with
significantly different wear patterns on the same vehicle as th e Smart City
Brake Support (SCBS) system may not operate normally.

Check under the hood area to make certain all filler caps are in
place and all loose items (e.g. tools, oil containers, etc.) ha ve been
removed.
Lift the hood, grasp the padded
area on the support rod, and
secure the support rod in the
clip. Verify that the support rod
is secured in the clip before
closing the hood.
Lower the hood slowly to a height of about 7.9 in. (200 mm) abo ve
its closed position and then let it drop.

WARNING
■Always check that the hood is closed and securely locked
A hood that is not closed and securely locked is dangerous as it could fly
open while the vehicle is moving and block the driver’s vision which could
result in a serious accident.
NOTICE
When closing the hood, do not push it excessively such as by applying your
weight. Otherwise, the hood could be deformed.

■Always use wheels of the correct size on your vehicle
Using a wrong-sized wheel is dangerous. Braking and handling could
be affected, leading to loss of control and an accident.

Tire Labeling
Please refer to the sample below.
Federal law requires tire manufacturers to place standardized
information on the sidewall of all tires. This information identi-
fies and describes the fundamental characteristics of the tire
and also provides a tire identif ication number for safety stan-
dard certification and in case of a recall.

P215/65R15 95H is an example of a tire size and load index rati ng.
Here is an explanation of the various components of that tire s ize and
load index rating. Note that the tire size and load index ratin g may be
different from the example.
● P
Indicates a tire that may be installed on cars, SUVs, minivans and
light trucks as desig nated by the Tire and R im Association (T&RA).
If your tire size does not begin with a letter this may mean it is desig-
nated by either ETRTO (European Tire and Rim Technical Organiza -
tion) or JATMA (Japan Tire Manufacturing Association).
● 215
“215” is the nominal width of th e tire in millimeters. This three-digit
number gives the width in millimet ers of the tire from sidewall edge
to sidewall edge. In general, the larger the number, the wider the
tire.
● 65
“65” is the aspect ratio. This two-digit number indicates the t ire’s
ratio of height to width.
● R
“R” is the tire construction sym bol. R indicates “Radial ply construc-
tion”.
● 15
“15” is the wheel rim diameter in inches.
● 95
“95” is the Load Index. This two-or three-digit number indicate s how
much weight each tire can support.
● H
“H” is the speed rating. The speed rating denotes the maximum
speed for which the use of the tire is rated.
