2-9. Driving Tips
2
Before Driving
Winter Driving
Carry emergency gear, including tire chains, window scraper, flares, a
small shovel, jumper cables, and a small bag of sand or salt.
Ask your Toyota dealer to check the following:
• Have the proper ratio of ant ifreeze in the radiator.
Refer to Engine Coolant on P. 445.
• Inspect the battery and its cabl es. Cold reduces battery capacity.
• Use an engine oil appropriate for the lowest ambient temperatures that the vehicle w ill be driven in (P. 442).
• Inspect the ignition system for damage and loose connections.
• Use washer fluid made with antifreeze but do not use engine cool-
ant antifreeze for washer fluid ( P. 449).
●Do not use the parking brake in freezing weather as it may freeze. Instead,
shift to 1 or R with a manual transaxle and to P with an automa tic transaxle.
Block the rear wheels.
● Remove snow before driving. Snow left on the windshield is dang erous as it
could obstruct vision.
● Do not apply excessive force to a window scraper when removing ice or fro-
zen snow on the mirror glass and windshield.
● Never use warm or hot water for removing snow or ice from windo ws and
mirrors as it could result in the glass cracking.
● Drive slowly. Braking performance can be adversely affected if snow or ice
adheres to the brake components. If this situation occurs, drive the vehicle
slowly, releasing the accelerator pedal and lightly applying the brakes sev-
eral times until the brake performance returns to normal.

When Driving
*1: The light turns on when the ignition is switched on for an operation check,
and turns off a few seconds later or when the engine is started . If the light
does not turn on or remains turned on, have the vehicle inspect ed at your
Toyota dealer.
*2: The light turns on continuously when the parking brake is appl ied.
These lights turn on or flash to notify the user of the system operation
status or a system malfunction.

When Driving
Windshield Wipers and Washer
The ignition must be switched ON to use the wipers.
Because heavy ice and snow can jam the wiper blades, the wiper motor is
protected from motor breakdown, overheating and possible fire b y a circuit
breaker. This mechanism will automatically stop operation of th e blades, but
only for about 5 minutes.
If this happens, turn off the wiper switch and park off the rig ht-of-way, and
remove the snow and ice.
After 5 minutes, turn on the switch and the blades should opera te normally. If
they do not resume functioning, consult your Toyota dealer as s oon as possi-
ble. Drive to the side of the road and park off the right-of-wa y. Wait until the
weather clears before trying to drive with the wipers inoperative.
WARNING
■ Use only windshield washer fluid or plain water in the reservoir
Using radiator antifreeze as washer fluid is dangerous. If sprayed on the
windshield, it will dirty the windshield, affect your visibilit y, and could result
in an accident.
■ Only use windshield washer fluid mixed with anti-freeze protect ion in
freezing weather conditions
Using windshield washer fluid without anti-freeze protection in freezing
weather conditions is dangerous as it could freeze on the winds hield and
block your vision which could cause an accident. In addition, m ake sure the
windshield is sufficiently warmed using the defroster before spraying the
washer fluid.

If the washer does not work, inspect the fluid level (P. 449). If the
fluid level is normal, cons ult your Toyota dealer.
With the wiper lever in the or position, the wipers will oper ate contin-
uously until the lever is released.

Maintenance and Care
Owner Maintenance Precautions
The owner or a qualified service technician should make these vehicle
inspections at the indicated intervals to ensure safe and depen dable
operation.
Bring any problem to the attention of your Toyota dealer or qua lified
service technician a s soon as possible.
■When Refueling
• Brake and clutch fluid level ( P. 448)
• Engine coolant level ( P. 4 4 5 )
• Engine oil level ( P. 444)
• Washer fluid level ( P. 449)
■At Least Monthly
• Tire inflation pressures ( P. 459)
■At Least Twice a Year (For Exam ple, Every Spring and Fall)
You can do the following scheduled maintenance items if you hav e
some mechanical ability and a few basic tools and if you closel y fol-
low the directions in this manual.
• Engine coolant ( P. 445)
• Engine oil ( P. 442)
Improper or incomplete service may result in problems. This sec tion
gives instructions only for it ems that are easy to perform.
As explained in the Introduction ( P. 432), several procedures can be
done only by a qualifi ed service technician with special tools.
Improper owner maintenance during the warranty period may affec t
warranty coverage. Refer to Introduction ( P. 432) for owner’s
responsibility in protecting your investment. For details, read the sep-
arate Toyota Warranty and Maintenance Guide provided with the v ehi-
cle. If you are unsure about any servicing or maintenance proce dure,
have it done by your Toyota dealer.
There are strict environmental laws regarding the disposal of w aste oil
and fluids. Please dispose of your waste properly and with due regard
to the environment.
We recommend that you entrust the oil and fluid changes of your vehi-
cle to your Toyota dealer.

Window Washer Fluid
Inspect fluid level in the washer
fluid reservoir; add fluid if neces-
sary.
Use plain water if washer fluid is unavailable.
But use only washer fluid in cold weather to prevent it from freezing.
State or local regulations may restrict the use of volatile org anic compounds
(VOCs), which are commonly used as anti-freeze agents in washer fluid. A
washer fluid with limited VOC content should be used only if it provides ade-
quate freeze resistance for all regions and climates in which t he vehicle will
be operated.

WARNING
■ Use only windshield washer fluid or plain water in the reservoir
Using radiator antifreeze as washer fluid is dangerous. If sprayed on the

■ Using Washer Fluid Without Anti- freeze Protection in Cold Weather
Operating your vehicle in temperatures below 40 °F (4 °C) using washer
fluid without anti-freeze protection is dangerous as it could c ause impaired
windshield vision and result in an accident. In cold weather, a lways use
washer fluid with anti-freeze protection.

Maintenance and Care
• When cleaning the plastic lenses of the lights, do not use gasoline,
kerosene, rectified spirit, paint, thinner, highly acidic deter gents, or
strongly alkaline detergents. Ot herwise, these chemical agents can
discolor or damage the surfaces resulting in a significant loss in
functionality. If plastic parts become inadvertently exposed to any of
these chemical age nts, flush with water immediately.
• If plastic parts such as the bumpers become inadvertently expo sed
to chemical agents or fluids such as gasoline, oil, engine cool ant, or
battery fluid, it could cause di scoloration, staining, or paint peeling.
Wipe off any such chemical agents or fluids using a soft cloth imme-
diately.
• High water temperature and high water pressure car washers are available depending on the type of high pressure car washer
device. If the car washer nozzle is put too close to the vehicl e or
aimed at one area for an extended period of time, it could defo rm
plastic parts or damage the paint.
• Do not use wax containing compounds (polish). Otherwise, it co uld
result in paint damage.
• In addition, do not use an electrical or air tool to apply wax . Other-
wise, the frictional heat generat ed could result in deformation of
plastic parts o r paint damage.
NOTICE
●Do not use any detergent other than mild detergent. Before usin g any
detergent, verify the ingredients.
Otherwise, the product could discolor or stain the aluminum whe els.
● Do not use a wire brush or any abrasive cleaner, polishing comp ound, or
solvent on aluminum wheels. They may damage the coating.
● Always use a sponge or soft cloth to clean the wheels.
Rinse the wheels thoroughly with lukewarm or cold water. Also, be sure to
clean the wheels after driving on dusty or salted roads to help prevent cor-
rosion.
● Avoid washing your vehicle in an automatic car wash that uses h igh-speed
or hard brushes.
