5-2. Steps to take in an emergency
n
Starting the engine when the battery is discharged (vehicles with an
automatic transmission)
The engine cannot be started by push-starting.
n A
voiding a discharged battery
lT
urn off the headlights and the audio system while the engine is turned
off.
l T
urn off any unnecessary electrical components when the vehicle is run -
ning at a low speed for an extended period, such as in heavy traffic, etc.
CAUTION
nAvoiding battery fires or explosions
Observe the following precautions to prevent accidentally igniting the flam-
mable gas that may be emitted from the battery.
lMake sure the jumper cable is connected to the correct terminal and that it
is not unintentionally in contact with any part other than the intended termi-
nal.
l Do not allow the jumper cables to come into contact with the “+” and “-” ter-
minals.
l Do not smoke, use matches, cigarette lighters or allow open flame near
the battery.

n
Overheating
If you observe the following, your vehicle may be overheating.
lThe high
engine coolant temperature warning light flashes or comes on
or a loss of power is experienced.
l Steam is coming from under the hood.
CAUTION
nTo prevent an accident or injury when inspecting un der the hood of
your vehicle
l If steam is seen coming from under the hood, do not open the hood until
the steam has subsided. The engine compartment may be very hot, caus-
ing serious injury such as burns.
l Keep hands and clothing away from the fan and other belts while the
engine is running.
l Do not loosen the radiator cap while the engine and radiator are hot.
Serious injury, such as burns, may result from hot coolant and steam
released under pressure.
NOTICE
n When adding engine coolant
Wait until the engine has cooled down before adding engine coolant.
When adding coolant, do so slowly. Adding cool coolant to a hot engine too
quickly can cause damage to the engine.

Fuel information
nFuel tank opening fo r unleaded gasoline
To help prevent incorrect fueling, your Toyota has a fuel tank opening that
only accommodate
s the special nozzle on unleaded fuel pumps.
n If your engine knocks
l Consult your T
oyota dealer.
l Y
ou may occasionally notice light knocking for a short time while acceler -
ating or driving uphill. This is normal and there is no need for concern.
n Gasoline quality
In very few cases, driveability problems may be caused by the brand of gas -
oline you are using. If driveability problems persist, try changing the brand of
gasoline. If this does not correct the problem, c
onsult your Toyota dealer.
n Gasoline quality st
andards
l Automotive manufacture
rs in the US, Europe and Japan have developed
a specification for fuel quality called World-Wide Fuel Charter (WWFC)
that is expected to be applied worldwide.
l The
WWFC consists of four categories that are based on required emis -
sion levels. In the US, category 4 has been adopted.
l The WWFC improves air quality by
lowering emissions in vehicle fleets,
and customer satisfaction through better performance.
Your vehicle must use only unleaded gasoline.
Select octane rating 87 (Research Octane Number 91) or higher. Use
of unleaded gasoline with an octane rating lower than 87 may result
in engine knocking. Persistent kno cking can lead to engine damage.
At minimum, the gasoline you use should meet the specifications
of ASTM D4814 in the U.S.A. and CGSB3.5-M93 in Canada.
