Hybrid drive energy flow is shown with symbols and arrows in the instrument cluster display (MFI) and on the Infotainment System screen. The displays let you know whether the electric motor or the engine is active while driving.
Explanation of the symbols that appear in the energy flow display when the vehicle is not moving

Color codes

Color Infotainment System screen
Orange Energy flow from combustion engine (combustion engine drive).
Blue Energy flow from the high-voltage battery (electrical motor drive).
Energy flow to the high-voltage battery (battery charge).
Green Power regeneration through deceleration or braking (recuperation).

NOTICE
x Failure to heed warning lights or text WARNINGS can result in vehicle damage.
x If the 12 Volt battery is disconnected or dead or has been replaced, there is a possibility that the combustion engine will not automatically switch off when the vehicle is powered by the electric motor. If this situation persists for several days, take the vehicle to an authorized Volkswagen dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility that is qualified to do work on hybrid vehicles.
x Never transport water or other liquids or fluids in open containers, such as an aquarium. If liquid is spilled in the luggage compartment, this can cause short circuits or damage the high-voltage battery.
NOTICE
Never block or cover the cooling air vents for the high-voltage hybrid battery under the rear seat. Blocking or covering these vents can damage the high-voltage battery.
NOTICE
If the vehicle is not used for a longer period, the high-voltage battery will run down. To keep the high-voltage battery in good condition, the vehicle needs to be driven at least every 2 months for at least 30 minutes or 15 miles (20 km).
x If the high-voltage battery is dead, the gasoline engine will not start. Contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer, an authorized Volkswagen Service Facility, or another qualified workshop for assistance.
Special considerations for hybrid vehicles

Jump-starting
If the 12 Volt electrical system is not working because the 12 Volt vehicle battery is dead, the hybrid
vehicle can be jump-started like a conventional vehicle ⇒ page 422, Jump-starting. For this purpose, the vehicle has a jump start terminal in the engine compartment. You must open the fuse box cover in
the engine compartment to get to the jump-start terminal ⇒ page 403, Fuses.
Hybrid warning labels
There are additional warning labels that warn against touching hybrid system components. The warning labels are placed:
x On each high-voltage component, for example, in the engine compartment or underneath the
luggage compartment ⇒ fig. 128 A.
x In the engine compartment on the hood latch carrier B.

Hybrid options in the Infotainment System

x Switch on the ignition.
x Switch on the Infotainment system, if necessary.
x Press the CAR Infotainment button.
x Tap a function key on the screen to view the information described below.

Function key Function
Driv. data Since Start Display of average fuel consumption, average speed, route, travel time, and range from the time the ignition was switched on until the time it was switched off.
Long-term Display of average fuel consumption, average speed, route, travel time, and range.
Hybrid Energy flow Shows the energy flow between the engine, high-voltage battery, and driving wheels
Zero Emission Displays the emission-free driving time as a bar graph. Each bar represents 1 minute of driving. The height of the bar indicates the proportion of emission-free driving in %.
A full bar, or 100% ⇒ fig. 129 (1), is a 1 minute interval of emission-free hybrid driving or sailing. No bar, or 0% (2), is a 1 minute interval driving only with the combustion engine. The display shows the emissions for a maximum of 30 minutes. Tapping Reset resets all values on this graph to zero.

accelerator. For Hill Hold to work, the engine must be running and the vehicle must be in Drive (D), Sport Drive (S), or Reverse (R) and you must use the foot brake to hold the vehicle before starting to move.
Hill Hold keeps the brake applied for not quite 2 seconds with the same force you used to prevent the vehicle from moving. This gives you time to take your foot off the brake and gently depress the accelerator to get the vehicle moving again. If you do not depress the accelerator pedal and get the vehicle moving again within this time, the brakes will release and the vehicle will roll downhill. Furthermore, if any requirement for engaging Hill Hold is no longer met while the vehicle is stopped, Hill Hold disengages and the brakes are automatically released and will no longer hold the vehicle.
Hill Hold is activated automatically when points 1 to 3 are met at the same time:

Step Automatic transmission
1. Hold the stopped vehicle on an incline with the foot or parking brake.
2. The engine must be running “smoothly.”
3. An automatic transmission vehicle must be in Reverse (R), Drive (D), or Sport Drive (S) and the foot brake must be depressed to keep the vehicle from moving.
4. To drive off, take your foot off the brake pedal and gently depress the accelerator within 2 seconds.
Hill Hold is immediately deactivated:
x If any requirement listed in the table above is no longer met.
x If the engine is not running smoothly or the engine malfunctions.
x If the engine stalls or is switched off.
x If the transmission is in Neutral (N).
x If a tire does not have enough road contact (such as when the vehicle is tipped or at an angle).
WARNING
The intelligent technology of Hill Hold cannot overcome the laws of physics. Never let the increased convenience provided by Hill Hold tempt you into taking risks.
x The Hill Hold feature cannot hold the vehicle in all hill start situations (for example, if the surface is icy or slippery).
x Hill Hold can only help keep the vehicle from moving for less than 2 seconds. After that, the brakes will be released and the vehicle can roll down the hill.
