The heating function is used to defrost/de-ice the windshield and/or the rear window and doormirrors.

Heated rear window and door mirrors
Press button (1) to defrost/de-ice the windshield and/or button (2) to defrost the rear window anddoor mirrors. The indicator lights in the respectivebuttons indicate that the function is active. Switchthe function off when then windshield/rear win-dow/mirrors have cleared to help avoid batterydrain. The heating function will also switch offautomatically after a certain amount of time. The rear window is then defogged/de-iced (the function will switch on and off automatically until the ignition is switched off) if the ambient tem-perature remains below 45 °F (7 °C). Auto-defrosting for the rear window and door mirrors (if the vehicle is started when the ambienttemperature is below 45 °F (7 °C) can be selected in MY CAR under

If the Engine Remote Start (ERS) * function is
used, the electrically heated windshield function will be activated automatically at temperaturesbelow approx. 40 °F (+5 °C) if auto-defrostinghas been selected in the MY CAR menu. See My Car – introduction (p. 71) for a descrip- tion of the menu system.

Gate Operator/Canadian Programming
Canadian radio-frequency laws require transmit- ter signals to “time-out” (or quit) after severalseconds of transmission – which may not be longenough for HomeLink to pick up the signal dur-ing programming. Similar to this Canadian law,some U.S. gate operators are designed to “time-out” in the same manner. If you live in Canada or you are having difficulties programming a gate operator or garage dooropener by using the “Programming” procedures, replace “Programming HomeLink” step 2 with the following:
• Continue to press and hold the HomeLink button while you
press and release - every
two seconds (“cycle”) your hand-held trans-
mitter until the HomeLink indicator light changes from a slow to a rapidly blinkinglight. Now you may release both the Home-Link and hand-held transmitter buttons.
Proceed with “Programming” step 3 to complete.
Resetting HomeLink ButtonsUse the following procedure to reset (erase pro-gramming) from the three HomeLink buttons(individual buttons cannot be reset but can be“reprogrammed” as outlined in the following sec-tion):
1. Press and hold the two outer HomeLink but- tons until the indicator light begins to flash. 2. Release both buttons.
> HomeLink is now in the training (or learn-ing) mode and can be programmed at any time beginning with “Programming” - step1.
Reprogramming a Single HomeLink Button
To program a device to HomeLink using a Home- Link button previously trained, follow these steps:
1. Press and hold the desired HomeLink but-
ton. DO NOT release the button.
2. The indicator light will begin to flash after 20 seconds. Without releasing the HomeLink button, proceed with “Programming” - step 1.

The controls on the left steering wheel lever are used to access the menus (p. 108) that are dis-
played in the instrument panel (p. 63). Themenus displayed depend on the current ignition
mode (p. 74).

Information display – messagesThe controls on the left steering wheel lever are used to scroll among messages displayed in theinstrument panel and to confirm selections. When information, indicator or warning symbols illuminate, an explanatory message will be dis-played in the instrument panel.
When a warning (p. 69), information (p. 67) or indicator symbol (p. 67) comes on, a correspond-ing message appears in the information panel. Anerror message is stored in a memory list until thefault is rectified. Press OK to acknowledge and scroll among the
messages.
NOTE
If a warning message appears while you are using the trip computer, the message must be read and confirmed by pressing OK before
the previous activity can be resumed.

Climate – general information
The vehicle is equipped with Electronic Climate
Control (ECC) (p. 125) that cools, heats or dehumidifies the air in the passenger compart-ment.
Air conditioning
NOTE
• The air conditioning can be switched off, but to ensure the best possible climatecomfort in the passenger compartmentand to prevent the windows from misting,it should always be on.
• In warm weather, a small amount of watermay accumulate under the car when ithas been parked. This water is condensa-tion from the A/C system and is normal.
Side windows and moonroofTo ensure that the air conditioning works opti- mally, the side windows, and the optional moon-roof should be closed.
Fog on the inside of the windowsThe defroster function (p. 128) should be usedto remove fog or mist from the inside of the win-dows. Keeping the windows clean with a com-mercially available window washing spray will alsohelp prevent fogging or misting.
Vents in the parcel shelf
NOTE
The air vents at the rear of the parcel shelf should never be obstructed.
Temporary shut-off of the air conditioning
The air conditioning (p. 128) is momentarily dis- engaged during full acceleration or when drivinguphill with a trailer. This may result in a temporaryincrease in cabin temperature.
Ice and snowAlways keep the air intake grille at the base ofthe windshield free of snow.
Climate system maintenanceSpecial tools and equipment are required tomaintain and carry out repairs on the climate sys-tem. Work of this type should only be done by atrained and qualified Volvo service technician.
RefrigerantVolvo cares about the environment. The air condi-tioning system in your car contains a CFC-freerefrigerant – R134a. This substance will notdeplete the ozone layer. The air conditioning sys-tem contains 1.76 lbs (800 g) of R134a. Thesystems uses PAG oil.

NOTE
•Triangular areas at the far sides of the windshield are not heated electrically andwill take slightly longer to defrost/de-ice.
• The heated windshield may affect theperformance/range of e.g., transpondersused to automatically pay highway tolls orother communication equipment.
The following occurs when the defroster/wind- shield heating functions have been activated:
• Blower speed increases automatically andthe air conditioning (p. 128) will switch on (ifnot already on and if the passenger compart-ment blower is not turned off) to dehumidifythe air in the passenger compartment. Airconditioning can be switched off by pressing the
AC button.
• Recirculation (p. 130) will not function while defrost is engaged.
The climate system will return to its previous set-tings when the defroster/windshield heatingfunction is switched off. See also Heated windshield *, rear window and
door mirror defrosters (p. 99) for additional infor- mation.

The air distribution function consists of three buttons.

When a button is pressed, the corresponding fig- ure will appear in the display with an arrow indi-cating which manual air flow has been selected(see the following illustration). See also the airdistribution chart (p. 131).

Air distribution – recirculation Recirculation can be used to shut out exhaust fumes, smoke, etc., from the passenger com-partment.
The air in the passenger com- partment is then recirculated,i.e., no air from outside the caris taken into the car when thisfunction is activated. The indi-cator light in the button will illu-minate when recirculation is
selected. If the air in the car recirculates for too long, there is a risk of condensation forming on the insidesof the windows, especially in winter.
TimerThe timer function minimizes the risk of fogging, or stale air when the recirculation function isselected by automatically switching off the func-tion after a certain length of time, depending onthe ambient temperature. Activate/deactivate the function under
Climate settingsRecirculation timer. See My Car – introduction
(p. 71) for a description of the menu system.
NOTE
When Defroster is selected, recirculation is always deactivated.

Fold the right backrest forward.
Release the hatch in the rear seat backrest by sliding the catch up while folding thehatch forward.
Return the backrest to the upright position with the hatch open.
Use the seat belt to prevent the load from mov-ing.
WARNING
• Always secure the load to help prevent it from moving in the event of sudden brak-ing.
• Switch off the engine, apply the parking brake and put the gear selector in
P
when loading and unloading the vehicle.
The cover on the rear seat armrest/child seat has no hinge. The cover must be removed before theski hatch is used. Removal:
–Open the cover 30 degrees and lift straight up.
Installation:
–Insert the cover in the grooves behind the upholstery and close the cover.

Loading – roof load carriers
Using load carriersLoad carriers are available as Volvo accessories. Observe the following points when in use:
• To avoid damaging your vehicle and toachieve maximum safety when driving, werecommend using the load carriers that Volvohas developed especially for your vehicle.
• Volvo-approved removable roof racks aredesigned to carry the maximum allowableroof load for this vehicle: 220 lbs (100 kg).For non-Volvo roof racks, check the manu-facturer's weight limits for the rack.
• Never exceed the rack manufacturer's weighlimits and never exceed the maximum ratedroof load of 220 lbs (100 kg).
• Avoid single-point loads. Distribute loadsevenly.
• Place heavier cargo at the bottom of theload.
• Secure the cargo correctly with appropriatetie-down equipment.
• Check periodically that the load carriers andload are properly secured.
• Remember that the vehicle's center of gravityand handling change when you carry a loadon the roof.

Unlocking
The vehicle can be unlocked from inside the vehi- cle in two ways:• By pressing the unlock button
.
• The
front doors can be unlocked and
opened by pulling the door handle once. The rear doors can be unlocked by pulling the
door handle once and opened by pulling the handle again.
Locking
• Press the lock button after the front
doors have been closed.
• Press the lock button
: all of the doors
that are closed will lock.
• Each door can be locked individually with the lock button on the respective doors. The doormust be closed first.
Indicator light in the lock buttons
There are two versions of the central locking sys- tem that affect the indicator light in the driver'sdoor central locking button. If
only the driver's door has a central locking but-
ton:
• If the light is on, this indicates that all of the doors are locked.
If there are central locking buttons in both front
doors and electric lock buttons in the rear sidedoors: •
If a light is on in one of the buttons, thismeans that only that door is locked. Whenthe lights are on in all of the buttons, all ofthe doors are locked.
Lock buttons in the rear side doors
The indicator light in the button is on when the door is locked
The button in each of the rear side doors locks that door only. To unlock the door:
• The door can be unlocked by pulling the door handle once and opened by pulling the han-dle again.
Automatic relockingIf the doors are unlocked, the locks will automati-cally reengage (re-lock) and the alarm will re-armafter 2 minutes unless a door or the trunk hasbeen opened.
Automatic lockingWhen the vehicle starts to move, the doors andtrunk can be locked automatically. This feature can be turned on or off by pressing

Stability system – introduction The Electronic Stability Control (ESC) system consists of a number of functions designed tohelp reduce wheel spin, counteract skidding andto generally help improve directional stability.
A pulsating sound will be audible when the system is actively operating and isnormal. Acceleration will also beslightly slower than normal.
WARNING
•The stability system (ESC) is intended to help improve driving safety but cannotdeal with all situations, or traffic, road andweather conditions. Speed and drivingstyle should always be adapted to thecurrent driving situation.
• ESC supplements, but can never replace,the driver's judgment and responsibilitywhen operating the vehicle. The driver isalways responsible for operating the vehi-cle in a safe manner in accordance withapplicable traffic regulations.
ESC consists of the following functions:
• Traction control
• Spin control
• Active Yaw Control
• Engine Drag Control •
Corner Traction Control
Traction Control (TC)
This function is designed to help reduce wheel spin at low speeds by transferring power from adrive wheel that begins to lose traction to thewheel on the opposite side of the vehicle (on thesame axle).
Spin Control (SC)
The SC function is designed to help prevent the drive wheels from spinning while the vehicle isaccelerating.
Active Yaw Control (AYC)
This function helps maintain directional stability, for example when cornering, by braking one ormore of the wheels if the vehicle shows a ten-dency to skid or slide laterally.
Corner Traction Control (CTC)
CTC compensates for understeering and helps provide additional stability when acceleratingthrough a curve by preventing the inside wheelfrom spinning. This is particularly useful whenaccelerating on a curving highway on-ramp. CTC is most effective if the stability system's Sport
mode is selected. See the section about
Sport mode.
Engine Drag Control (EDC)
EDC helps keep the engine running if the wheels show a tendency to lock, e.g., when shifting downin the Geartronic manual shifting mode or whileusing the engine's braking function on a slipperysurface. If the engine were to stop, power steer- ing would not function, making the vehicle moredifficult to steer.
Trailer Stability Assist (TSA)
The TSA helps stabilize a vehicle that is towing a trailer when the vehicle and trailer have begun tosway. See Trailer Stability Assist (TSA) (p. 285)for more information. This system is automatically deactivated if the driver selects
Sport mode.
