Key memory
The memory in the remote key makes it possible to store certain personal settings.
The position of the side door mirrors, power driv- er's seat * and the selected instrument panel
theme 1
are stored in the remote keys when the
vehicle is locked . The next time the driver's door
is unlocked with the same remote key and the
door is opened within 2 minutes, the power driv-
er's seat and side door mirrors will automatically move to the position that they were in when thedoors were most recently locked with the sameremote key. If the seat/mirrors have not beenreadjusted since the vehicle was locked, they willalready be in the position stored in that particularremote key and will not move. For more informa-tion on this feature, see Front seats – power seat(p. 76). This feature can be activated or deactivated in the vehicle's menu by pressing MY CAR and
going into
SettingsCar settingsCar key
memory. For a description of the menu system,
see My Car – introduction (p. 71).
NOTE
If the vehicle is locked with the remote key or is left unlocked for more than 30 minutes, thekey memory function will be deactivated. To reactivate the key's memory:
• Press the unlock button on the remote key.

Locking/unlocking confirmation Settings can be made in the menu system for audible and visual confirmation when the vehiclehas been locked or unlocked. With these func-tions activated, the following will occur when thevehicle is locked/unlocked:
Locking confirmation
• The turn signals flash once, an audible signal sounds and the door mirrors will fold
* in.
Confirmation will only be given when all doors and the trunk are properly closed and locked.
NOTE
If you do not receive confirmation when lock- ing the vehicle, check whether a door or thetrunk is ajar, or if this feature has been turnedoff in the menu.
Unlocking confirmation
• The turn signals will flash twice and the door mirrors will fold
* out.
Making a setting
Different alternatives for locking/unlocking con- firmation can be selected in the menus by press- ing MY CAR on the center console control panel.
• To activate visual confirmation: go to
SettingsCar settingsLight settingsand select Door lock confirmation light
and/or Unlock confirmation light by
pressing OK/MENU .
• To activate audible confirmation: go to
SettingsCar settingsLock settingsand select Audible confirmation by press-
ing OK/MENU .

Lock indicator
Lock/alarm indicator light
A flashing indicator light at the base of the wind- shield verifies that the vehicle is locked.

Immobilizer (start inhibitor)
The immobilizer is a start inhibitor that helps pre- vent unauthorized persons from starting theengine. Each of the keys supplied with your vehicle con- tains a coded transponder. The code in the keyis transmitted to an antenna in the ignition slotwhere it is compared to the code stored in thestart inhibitor module. The vehicle will start onlywith a properly coded key. If you misplace a key,take the other keys to a trained and qualifiedVolvo service technician for reprogramming asan anti-theft measure. The following messages(which may appear in the instrument panel dis-play) are related to the immobilizer:

Unlock – Press the Unlock button on the
remote once to unlock the driver's door. After a short pause, press the Unlock button a second time within 10 seconds to unlock theother doors and the trunk. This function can be changed so that all doors unlock at the same time by pressing My Car and
going to
SettingsCar settingsLock
settings
Change doors unlock setting. For

Approach lighting – As you approach the
vehicle, press the button on the remote key to light the interior lighting, parking lights, license plate lighting and the lights in the door mirrors *.
These lights will switch off automatically after 30, 60 or 90 seconds. For a description of the menusystem, see My Car – introduction (p. 71).
Unlock/open trunk
Press once: This unlocks the trunk (but does
not open it) and disarms the alarm (the alarm indicator light on the dashboard will go out). If thetrunk is not opened within two minutes it willautomatically relock and the alarm will berearmed. Press twice: This both unlocks the trunk and
pops it open slightly.
NOTE
Any excess weight (snow, etc.) on the trunk lid may prevent it from opening.
For information on opening the trunk from the passenger compartment, see Locking/unlocking– trunk (p. 160). After closing, the trunk will not automatically relock. Press Lock to relock it and rearm thealarm.
Panic alarm – This button can be used to
attract attention during emergency situations. To activate the panic alarm, press and hold this button for at least 3 seconds or press it twicewithin 3 seconds. The turn signals and horn willbe activated. The panic alarm will stop automati-cally after 2 minutes and 45 seconds. To deactivate, wait approximately 5 seconds and press the button again. The Panic alarm button will not unlock the vehi- cle.

Remote key – range The remote key has a range of approximately 60 ft. (20 m) from the vehicle.
NOTE
Buildings or other obstacles may interfere with the function of the remote key. The vehi-cle can also be locked or unlocked with thekey blade, see Alarm-related functions(p. 164).
If the remote key is removed from the vehicle while the engine is running or if the ignition is in mode
I or II and all of the doors are closed, a
message will appear in the instrument panel dis- play and there will be an audible signal. When the remote key is returned to the vehicle, the message will be erased and the audible sig-nal will stop after one of the following has beendone:
• The remote key is inserted in the ignition slot
• The vehicle's speed exceeds 20 mph(30 km/h)
• The
OK button on the left steering wheel

Locking/unlocking points with valet locking activated
With the valet locking function activated:
•The vehicle's doors can be locked or unlocked with the remote
• The engine can be started
• The glove compartment cannot be unlocked
• Access to the trunk is blocked (the trunk lidcannot be unlocked or opened with theremote, and the rear seat backrests cannotbe lowered
Activating the valet locking function
Insert the key blade in the glove compart- ment lock.
Turn the key blade180 degrees clockwise.
Remove the key blade from the lock. A mes- sage will appear in the instrument panel dis-play.
Deactivating the valet locking function
Turn the key blade 180 degrees counterclock- wise in the glove compartment lock to deactivatevalet locking. See locking/unlocking the glove compart- ment (p. 160) for information on locking theglove compartment normally, without activatingthe valet locking function.
Remote key – replacing the battery The remote key can be opened if the battery needs to be replaced.
The battery should be replaced if:
• The information symbol illuminates and

battery in remote control. Please change batteries.
is shown in the display and/or
• if the locks do not react after several attempts to unlock or lock the vehicle.
NOTE
The remote key's range is normally approxi- mately 60 ft (20 m) from the vehicle.

Keyless drive * – key memory
When you leave the vehicle with a remote key in your possession and lock any door, the position of the driver's seat 2
and door mirrors will be
stored in the remote key's memory.
The next time a door is opened by a person with the same remote key in his/her possession, the
driver's seat and door mirrors will automatically move to the position that they were in when thedoor was most recently locked.
NOTE
If several people carrying remote keys approach the vehicle at the same time, thedriver's seat and door mirrors will assume thepositions they were in for the person whoopens the driver's door.
See also power seats (p. 76) for information on adjusting and storing the seat's position in theseat memory.
NOTE
If the vehicle is locked by pressing the button on one of the door handles or by pressing thelock button on the remote key, or if it is leftunlocked for more than 30 minutes, the keymemory function will be deactivated. To reactivate the key's memory:
• Unlock the vehicle by pulling a door han- dle with the remote key in your posses-sion or by pressing the unlock button onthe remote key.

If all of the remote keys are removed from the vehicle while the engine is running or if the igni-tion modes (p. 74) is in mode II and all of the
doors are closed, a message will appear in theinstrument panel display and an audible signalwill sound.
When at least one remote key has been returned to the car, the message will be erased in the dis-play and the audible signal will stop when:
• A door has been opened and closed
• The remote key has been inserted in theignition slot
• The
OK button has been pressed. For the

Symbols and messages in the maininstrument panel
A text message can be erased by pressing briefly the OK button on the turn signal lever.

ESC Temporarily OFFThe ESC system function has been temporarily reduced due to high brake disc temperature. The function reacti- vates automatically when the brakes have cooled.
ESC Service requiredThe ESC system is not functioning properly.
• Stop the vehicle in a safe place, turn off the engine and restart it.
• If the message is still displayed when the engine has restarted, drive to an authorized Volvo workshop to have the system inspected.

Adjustable steering force *
Steering force increases with the speed of the vehicle to give the driver enhanced sense ofcontrol and stability. At low speed the vehicle iseasy to steer in order to facilitate parking, etc.

NOTE
This steering force level menu function can- not be accessed when the vehicle is inmotion.
NOTE
In certain situations, the power steering may become too warm and will have to be tempo-rarily cooled down. While this is happening,the power steering effect will be reducedslightly and somewhat more effort may berequired to turn the steering wheel. If this occurs, a message will be displayed in the instrument panel.
Road Sign Information (RSI) * –
introduction
RSI is a feature that helps the driver see road signs with the posted speed limit.
Introduction
Examples of readable road signs
If the vehicle passes a sign showing the speed limit, this will be displayed in the center console.
WARNING
RSI does not function in all situations and is only intended to provide supplementary infor-mation. The driver is always responsible for operating the vehicle safely.

Road Sign Information (RSI) – operation
Speed limit information
When RSI registers a road sign showing the speed limit, this sign is displayed as a symbol onthe instrument panel.
A speed limit or a limited access road

In situations where RSI detects a sign indicatingthe end of a particular speed limit or other indi-rect speed limit-related information (e.g., Freewayends, Expressway ends, etc.) this information willbe displayed in the instrument panel for approx.10 seconds, after which no road sign informationwill be shown until the next speed limit-relatedsign has been detected.

Speed alert
The driver can opt to be alerted if the vehicle exceeds the posted speed limit by more than3 mph (5 km/h). The alert is given when the sym-bol with the posted speed limit in the instrumentpanel begins to flash. To activate speed alert:

Sensus NavigationIf the vehicle is equipped with Sensus Navigation, speed-related information is gathered from thissystem if: •The speed limit previously detected by RSI is no longer considered valid and no new speedlimit sign has been detected.

increase/decrease the speed in 1-mph or 1- km/h increments. Release the button whenyou have reached the desired speed.
NOTE
• A temporary increase in speed by press- ing the accelerator pedal, for less than1 minute (e.g. when passing another car),does not affect the current cruise controlsetting. The vehicle will automaticallyreturn to the previously set speed whenthe accelerator pedal is released.
• If one of the cruise control buttons iskept depressed for more than approx.1 minute cruise control is disengaged.The engine must then be switched off inorder to reset cruise control.

Toggling between ACC and CC (standard Cruise Control)
Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) helps the driver maintain a safe distance/time interval to the vehi-cle ahead.
Switching from ACC to CCThis may be useful if, for example, the radar sen- sor is obstructed in some way. See AdaptiveCruise Control – limitations (p. 185) for addi-tional information.

Switching from ACC to CC means that:
• Your vehicle will

Switching from CC to ACC
Switch off cruise control by pressing once or
twice as needed according to the instructions in the previous section "Turning ACC off com- pletely." The next time the system is switched on,ACC will be reactivated.

Adaptive Cruise Control – engaging
Putting ACC in standby modeBefore ACC can be used to regulate speed and/or the distance to a vehicle ahead, it mustfirst be put in standby mode. To do so:

> The same symbol (7) appears (in white) in
the instrument panel to indicate that ACC is in standby mode.
NOTE
The driver's door must be closed and the driv- er's seat belt must be fastened before ACCcan be put in active mode. If the driver's seatbelt is taken off or if the driver's door isopened, ACC will return to standby mode.

Adaptive Cruise Control – setting speed
Setting a speedOnce ACC has been put in standby mode:

Put in active mode and set a speed (each additional press increases/decreases speedby 1 mph (approximately 2 km/h))

> The set speed, for example 60 mph (5), will be magnified for several seconds and the frame around the speed will change colors from white to green to indicate that this
speed has been stored (set).
