STARTING AND DRIVING
434
If contact occurs, flush the affected areaimmediately with water. Obtain medicalhelp immediately if eyes are affected.
Never expose the battery to open flameor electric spark. Do not smoke near thebattery. Failure to follow the instructionsfor jump starting can lead to injury.
NOTE
The vehicle cannot be started if the hybridbattery is discharged.
NOTE
If the starter battery has been discharged tothe extent that the vehicle does not have nor-mal electrical functions and the engine mustthen be jump-started with an external batteryor a battery charger, the Start/Stop functionmay remain activated. If the Start/Stop func-tion shortly thereafter auto-stops the engine, there is a huge risk that auto-start of theengine will fail due to insufficient batterycapacity since the battery had not had time torecharge.
If the vehicle has been jump-started or ifthere has not been enough time for the bat-tery to be charged with a battery charger, theStart/Stop function should be temporarilydeactivated until the battery has beenrecharged by the vehicle. At an ambient tem-perature of about +15°C (about 60°F), thebattery must be charged by the vehicle for atleast one hour. At lower ambient tempera-tures, the charging time can increase to3-4 hours. It is advisable to charge the batterywith an external battery charger.

Driving with a trailer
There are a number of things to consider whentowing a trailer, such as the towbar, the trailerand how the load is distributed in the trailer.
Load-carrying capacity is determined by the vehi-cle's curb weight. The total weight of all passen-gers and any installed accessories, e.g. towbar, reduces the vehicle's load-carrying capacity bythe corresponding amount.
Towbars used on the vehicle must beapproved for the applicable use.
Distribute the load on the trailer so that theweight on the towbar complies with thespecified maximum towball weight. Thetongue weight is calculated as part of thevehicle's payload.
Increase the tire pressure to the recom-mended pressure for a full load.
The engine is subjected to more load thanusual when towing a trailer.
Towing a trailer affects the vehicle's han-dling, durability and driving economy.
Do not drive with a heavy trailer when thevehicle is very new. Wait until the mileagehas reached at least 1000 km (620 miles).
On long and steep downgrades, the vehicle'sbrakes are subjected to much more loadthan usual. When manually shifting, down-shift and adapt speed accordingly.

CAUTION
It is not possible to charge another vehicle'sbattery by means of current through thecharging points. Using the charging points tocharge another vehicle's battery could causea fuse to blow, which would cause the charg-ing points to stop working.
CAUTION
Only a modern battery charger with controlledcharge voltage should be used to charge thestarter battery. The rapid charging functionshould not be used as this could damage thebattery.
NOTE
If both the starter battery and the hybrid bat-tery are discharged, both batteries must becharged. In such cases, it is not possible tocharge only the hybrid battery first.
The starter battery must have a certain levelof charge for it to be possible to charge thehybrid battery.
CAUTION
Failure to observe the following could causethe infotainment energy save mode to tempo-rarily stop working and/or a message in thedriver's display regarding the state of chargeof the starter battery may be temporarilyincorrect after an external starter battery orbattery charger has been connected:
The negative battery terminal of the vehi-cle's starter battery must never be usedto connect an external starter battery orbattery charger – only the vehicle's neg-ative charging point should be used asa grounding point.

NOTE
If the starter battery becomes discharged toomany times, it will shorten its service life.
The service life of the starter battery is affec-ted by several factors, such as driving condi-tions and climate. The starting capacity of thebattery reduces gradually over time. The bat-tery must therefore be recharged if the vehi-cle is not used or a long period of time or if itis only driven short distances. Severe cold fur-ther limits the starting capacity.
To keep the starter battery in a good condi-tion, the vehicle should be driven at least15 minutes per week or the battery should beconnected to a battery charger with automatictrickle charging.
A starter battery that is always kept fullycharged has the maximum service life.
Location
The start battery is located in the trunk.
WARNING
If the starter battery is disconnected, the func-tion for automatic opening and closing mustbe reset to function correctly. A reset isrequired in order for the pinch protection towork.
CAUTION
On certain models, the battery is secured witha tensioning strap. Make sure that the ten-sioning strap is always securely tightened.

Hybrid battery
The vehicle's electric motor is powered by arechargeable, maintenance-free, lithium-ionhybrid battery.
NOTE
The vehicle cannot be started if the hybridbattery is discharged.
NOTE
If both the starter battery and the hybrid bat-tery are discharged, both batteries must becharged. In such cases, it is not possible tocharge only the hybrid battery first.
The starter battery must have a certain levelof charge for it to be possible to charge thehybrid battery.
WARNING
Hybrid battery replacement may only be per-formed by a workshop – an authorized Volvoworkshop is recommended.
Coolant
The hybrid battery's cooling system has its ownexpansion tank.
CAUTION
Filling the hybrid battery coolant should onlybe performed by a workshop – an authorizedVolvo workshop is recommended.
Specifications for hybrid battery
Type: Lithium-ion
Power reserve: 10.4 kWh.
NOTE
The capacity of the hybrid battery decreaseswith age and use, which could result inincreased use of the combustion engine, leading to higher fuel consumption andreduced electric motor range.
