Auto-hold brakes
With the Auto-hold brake function, the driver canrelease the brake pedal and the brakes willremain applied, for example, when the vehiclehas stopped at a traffic light or intersection.
When the vehicle stops, the brakes are activatedautomatically. The function can use either thenormal brakes or the parking brakes to keep thevehicle stationary and works on flat surfaces orhills. When driving off, the brakes will be automat-ically released if the driver's seat belt is buckled.
NOTE
When braking to a stop on an uphill or down-hill gradient, depress the brake pedal withslightly more force than usual before releas-ing to ensure that the vehicle cannot move atall.
The parking brake is activated if
the vehicle is switched off
the driver's door is opened
the driver's seat belt is removed
the vehicle has been stationary for a pro-longed period of time (5-10 minutes)

Hill Start Assist
The function for assisting when starting the vehi-
cle on inclines (HSA4) helps prevent the vehiclefrom rolling backward when starting on an uphillgradient. When backing up a hill, HSA helpsprevent the vehicle from rolling forward.
The function retains pressure from the brakepedal in the brake system for several secondsafter the brake pedal has been released.
This temporary braking effect is released after afew seconds or when the driver begins driving.
Hill Start Assist is available even when the Auto-hold brake function is switched off.

Braking assist after a collision
In a collision in which the activation level isreached for the pyrotechnic seat belt tensionersor airbags, or if a collision with a large animal isdetected, the vehicle's brakes will be automati-cally activated. This function is intended to helpprevent or reduce the effects of any subsequentcollision.
After a serious collision, it may no longer be pos-sible to control and steer the vehicle. In order toavoid or mitigate a possible further collision witha vehicle or an object in the vehicle's path, thebrake assist system is activated automatically tohelp stop the vehicle safely.
The brake lights and hazard warning flashers areactivated during braking. When the vehicle hasstopped, the hazard warning flashers will con-tinue to flash and the parking brake will beapplied.
If braking is not appropriate, e.g. if there is a riskof being hit by passing traffic, the driver can over-ride the system by depressing the acceleratorpedal.
This function assumes that the brake system isintact after a collision.
Brake assist is part of the Rear Collision Warningand Blind Spot Information safety systems.

Select gears by moving the spring-loaded, non-locking gear selector forward or backward.
Gear selector positions
Park - P
Park is activated using the P button located nextto the gear selector.
Select P when the vehicle is parked or when star-ting the engine. The vehicle must be stationarywhen Park is selected.
To move to another gear from Park, the brakepedal must be depressed and the ignition inmode II.
When parking – apply the parking brake beforeshifting to Park.
WARNING
Always apply the parking brake when parkingon an incline. Selecting a gear or putting theautomatic transmission in P may not be suffi-cient to keep the vehicle stationary in all sit-uations.
NOTE
The gear selector must be in the P positionbefore the vehicle can be locked and thealarm set.
Help functions
The system will automatically shift to P
if the ignition is switched off while D or R isselected.
if the driver unbuckles the seat belt andopens the driver's door while the vehicle isrunning with the gear selector in a gear otherthan P.
To park a vehicle with an unbuckled seat belt andopen door – end P mode by shifting to R or Dagain.
The system will not automatically shift to P if theignition is switched off while the gear selector isin the neutral position (N). This is to make it pos-sible to wash the vehicle in an automatic carwash in which the vehicle is pulled forward onrolling wheels.
Reverse - R
Select R when backing up. The vehicle must bestationary when Reverse is selected.
Neutral - N
No gear is selected and the engine can bestarted. Apply the parking brake if the vehicle isstationary with the gear selector in N.
To move the gear selector from Neutral toanother gear, the brake pedal must be depressedand the ignition in mode II.
D drive mode
D is the normal driving gear position. The trans-mission shifts up or down automatically depend-ing on acceleration and speed.
The vehicle must be stationary when the gearselector is moved from R to D.

Grocery bag holders
Grocery bag holders (hooks) help keep shop-ping bags in place and prevent them from fallingover and spilling their contents in the cargocompartment.
On the sides of the cargo compartment
There is a grocery bag holder in the side panelon each side of the cargo compartment.
CAUTION
The grocery bag holders are only intended tohold weights up to 5 kg (11 lbs).
Under the parcel shelf *
Fold down the hook from underneath the parcelshelf. Bags with handles of a suitable height canbe hung from the hooks.

Load anchoring eyelets
The load anchoring eyelets in the cargo com-partment can be used to secure objects withstraps, a net, etc.
WARNING
Hard, sharp and/or heavy objects in or pro-truding from the vehicle can cause injury inthe event of hard braking.
Always secure large and heavy objects with aseat belt or cargo retaining straps.

Service and repairs
Service the vehicle regularly. Follow Volvo's rec-ommended service intervals.
Detailed inspection and repairs may only be per-formed by an authorized workshop.
WARNING
Do not make any repairs on this vehicle your-self. Electrical cables and/or components thathave come loose may only be corrected by anauthorized workshop – an authorized Volvoworkshop is recommended.
Introduction

The Federal Clean Air Act - U.S.
The Federal Clean Air Act requires vehicle manu-facturers to furnish written instructions to the ulti-mate purchaser to assure the proper servicingand function of the components that controlemissions. These services, which are listed in the"Warranty and Service Records Information"booklet, are not covered by the warranty. You willbe required to pay for labor and material used.
Maintenance
Your Volvo passed several major inspectionsbefore it was delivered to you, in accordance withVolvo specifications. The maintenance proce-dures outlined in the Warranty and ServiceRecords Information booklet, many of which willpositively affect your vehicle's emissions, shouldbe performed as indicated. It is recommendedthat receipts for vehicle emission maintenance beretained in case questions arise concerningmaintenance. Inspection and maintenance shouldalso be performed anytime a malfunction isobserved or suspected.

Swipe your hand from left to right under thehood, grasp the handle and move it up and tothe side to release the catch and lift thehood.
Warning - hood not closed
When the hood is released, a warningsymbol and graphic will be displayed inthe instrument panel and an audiblesignal will sound. If the vehicle beginsto roll, the audible signal will be repeated severaltimes.
NOTE
If the warning symbol is illuminated or anaudible warning signal sounds even thoughthe hood is securely closed, consult a work-shop - an authorized Volvo workshop is rec-ommended.
Closing the hood
1. Press down the hood until it begins to closeunder its own weight.
2. When the hood reaches the catch at thehandle in the front edge of the vehicle, pressdown on the hood to close it completely.
WARNING
Risk of injury! When closing, make sure thatthe hood is completely unobstructed and thatno one can be injured.
WARNING
Make sure the hood locks securely after clos-ing. It must audibly lock on both sides.

Never drive with the hood open!
If there are any indications while driving thatthe hood is not completely closed, stop imme-diately and close it securely.

Fuse pliers are provided on the inside of the fusebox cover to assist in removing and insertingfuses.
There are also spaces for several extra fuses inthe distribution box in the engine compart-ment.

Cleaning the interior
Only use cleaning agents and car care productsrecommended by Volvo. Clean regularly andtreat stains immediately for best results. It isimportant to vacuum before using a cleaningagent.
CAUTION
Some colored clothing (for example, darkjeans and suede garments) may stain theupholstery. If this occurs, it is important toclean and treat these parts of the uphols-tery as soon as possible.
Never use strong solvents such aswasher fluid, gasoline, mineral spirit orconcentrated alcohol to clean the interioras this can damage the upholstery aswell as other interior materials.
Never spray cleaning agent directly ontocomponents that have electrical buttonsand controls. Wipe instead with a dampcloth with cleaning agent.
Sharp objects and Velcro can damagethe car's textile upholstery.
Only use cleaning agent on the type ofmaterial it is intended for.

Cleaning the center display
Marks, stains, finger smudges etc. on the centerdisplay may affect its performance and readabil-ity. Clean the screen regularly with a microfibercloth.
To clean the center display:
1.Turn off the center display by pressing andholding the Home button.
2. Wipe the screen clean with the microfibercloth provided or use another microfibercloth of similar quality. Wipe the screen witha clean, dry microfiber cloth using small, cir-cular motions. If necessary, moisten the clothslightly.
3. Reactivate the display by pressing the Homebutton briefly.
